TheAlchemist··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
I agree it's quite weird to put it on a company blog, but it used to be that companies and their owners do express their views. As opposed to for example Big Tech, who doesn't express their views, but work very closely with Trump...

Gypsies are a major problem in a lot of cities in Europe... What would be a politically correct way to say that today ?

TheAlchemist··on What will our economic future look like?
How do we fight that ?

I'm thinking on this topic a lot lately - how do we change the system so that the bigger the company, the harder it becomes ? It's more of a political / societal issue. Similarly to housing - I believe it should be cheap to buy your first home, more expensive to buy a second one, and very expensive afterwards.

TheAlchemist··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
Interesting. And quite sad - we definitely should invest in things that make people lives better all around.

There are countries were public bathrooms are everywhere - New Zealand is a good example. As a tourist, you're never too far from one. Which is good, since quite often that may be the only human made thing, surrounded by beautiful nature.

TheAlchemist··on Being ambitious and being a dad
That's what I'm saying, maybe not with right words then.

Strong connections with kids are the most important thing, but it cannot be the only one. It wouldn't end great neither for both parties.

TheAlchemist··on Being ambitious and being a dad
I believe parents should definitely aim for both.

If you have kids and you prioritize your career to the point you never see your kids, and you will have huge and legitimate regrets later in life. Especially if you don't achieve Jobs / Musk level of financial success. That's pretty common knowledge.

But the opposite is also true. As parents, we're always examples for our kids, for better or worse. Do we want our kids to see us abandon our dreams 'because of them' or do we want them to see their parents showing them how to go after their dreams, because that's what life is about ?

TheAlchemist··on Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake – 5 km S of San José del Palmar, Colombia
Really curious if it's related somehow to the Venezuela one. Interestingly, New Zealand also experienced a well above average frequency of shakes recently, although the scientist don't see any relation yet.

TheAlchemist··on The Economics Behind the Spurs
That explains the Spurs situation very poorly actually. They are in very unusual situation, similar to OKC when they had young Durant / Westbrook / Harden, in that they have Victor, but also Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle who are also young and on a very clear path to becoming all-stars quite soon. De'Aaron Fox is quite irrelevant for their future. Their real question is how to hold the trio of Victor, Stephon and Dylan together. If they manage to do that, and barring serious injuries, they will have the best team in the NBA for the foreseeable future.
TheAlchemist··on The Problem with the Ferrari Luce EV Offers a Lesson for Every Leader
Hilariously, the quote that comes to my mind when reading about this monstrosity, is one from Steve Jobs "Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you".

Ferrari sells dreams. That's not a car anybody will dream about.

TheAlchemist··on SpaceX S-1
Maybe I'm missing something, but where do they show up in the financial results ?

They are yet to start paying this debt no ?

TheAlchemist··on SpaceX S-1
Did you actually read the S-1 ?

Tesla is mentionned 87 times. And even they explicitly state that they have strategic collaboration. They supposedly biggest projects are developped together (Macrohard, Terafab - all fugazzi, but still).

Related party transactions are close to a $1 Billion in 2025.

TheAlchemist··on SpaceX S-1
How so ? xAI / Twitter were merged in this year - they don't show up anywhere in the financials.
TheAlchemist··on SpaceX S-1
The S-1 states that it gets capacity from both Colossus 1 and Colossus 2.
TheAlchemist··on SpaceX S-1
What would be interesting to know how much did it cost xAI to build it ? Ai says between $18-$40 billion to just build, without running cost, but no idea how close to reality this is.
TheAlchemist··on SpaceX S-1
I know. They are very closely collaborating and are part of the same 'empire'. They will also go down together.
TheAlchemist··on SpaceX S-1
So be it. What's the alternative ? Continue a bubble ? Ride on the 'FSD by the end of the year' or 'thousands of Optimus next year' for the next 10 years ?

The guys is openly lying and clearly a drug addict at this point and people think he's not cooking the books ?

Musk empire will end up being a much bigger scandal than Enron ever was. It's just a matter of time until it unfolds.

TheAlchemist··on SpaceX S-1
Finally ! Can we end the debate about how mind blowingly profitable this company is ?

Mind you, those numbers don't take into account YET the Twitter debt / xAI merger burden - which will run into tens of billions per year.

I just can't, can't wait until this whole Musk fugazzi finally blows up.

TheAlchemist··on 590k buyers paid $59M for Trump's gold phone, but not one has shipped
It seems to me that it feels that the world, or at least the US, decided that far far worse things are acceptable too.

Not easy to be a parent and explain to kids that no, this is not how the world should be run. How do we expect them to have any confidence in the institutions and the rule of law ?

TheAlchemist··on Elon Musk Summoned to France to Face Criminal Charges
Why not ? Why do we allow global tech businesses and leaders to somehow be able to make billions in profits in countries, but don't pay any taxes or have close to 0 responsibility ?
TheAlchemist··on Belgium stops decommissioning nuclear power plants
Naive question - why couldn't we just launch this nuclear waste into ... space ?
TheAlchemist··on How to Build the Future: Demis Hassabis [video]
If you're interested in better thinking, go read a bit about Charlie Munger - he's gone now, but he was thinking about thinking for quite a long time and has some good advice.

Farnam Street used to be a very good blog too, albeit it feels much more 'commercial' for the past 5 years.

TheAlchemist··on Waymo in Portland
It's good to hear that more people are realizing that Tesla is nowhere near where they claim to be.

For anobody observing it from the sidelines, it was obvious for the past 3 years at least, that Tesla will not achieve real unsupervised FSD with HW3, and now it's also obvious it will not be wiht HW4. It's also obvious they are very well aware of those facts, despite lying to investors and customers for the past 10 years.

TheAlchemist··on Ask HN: What Makes AI a Bubble?
Exactly that. There was a very nice talk by Warren Buffett explaining that to business leaders at the height of the dot-com bubble - if I remember correctly it's full text is the introduction to his biography 'The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life'.

Airlines are a great example - they are everywhere, nobody can imagine life without them, and yet they are yet to make any money ! Maybe they will figure it out before oil runs out on planet Earth.

As for Buffett speach - ther is a specific quote about airlines in it: "If a capitalist had been present at Kitty Hawk back in the early 1900s he should’ve shot Orville Wright"

TheAlchemist··on The 1944 Warsaw Uprising, in Color
That's not accurate - the uprising was not planned in collaboration with the Russians.

The whole point of the uprising was to liberate Warsaw before the Russians get in, as everybody knew that Russians are not liberating Poland - they are looking to occupy the country, just as Germany did. If the Uprising was successfull, it would give a great credit and negotiating card to the Polish government.

Unfortunately, Russians knew that too - that's exactly why they stopped their advance and watched the city being razed to the ground. Also unfortunately, they were right and ended up occupying Poland for the next 45 years.

TheAlchemist··on Tesla basically cooked the books to show one last quarter of positive cash flow
Another very funny 'fact' - Tesla Semi. If you look at their quarterly releases:

- until 2025 it was listed as Pilot Production

- in Q1 2025 it moved to Construction

- in Q4 2025 it moved to Tooling

- in Q1 2026 it moved ... back to Pilot Production !

Everybody knows they just make up stuff as they go, but it's quite hilarious to watch. 1 Trillion $ company. I just can't wait for this house of cards to finally fall.

TheAlchemist··on SpaceX says it has agreement to acquire Cursor for $60B
About those underwriters - to quote the venerable Charlie Munger "they will sell 'shit' as long as 'shit' can be sold".
TheAlchemist··on Ask HN: If you exercise, do you notice any mental benefits?
"Mens sana in corpore sano"

People knew that for ages !

I too neglected my health when in my early 30s, luckily at 35 I started exercising and running again. I got in the best shape of my life around 40 and it was the best decision I've ever made.

As for specific experiences, my creativity and productivity on the mornings when I go for a sunrise run, is off the charts. I also tend to ponder things when swimming on lunchtime break and get surprisingly (at least to myself) good ideas.

TheAlchemist··on SpaceX files to go public
I really wish more people were aware of this. It's a major scandal and definitely not being talked enough about.

Nevermind SpaceX, which at least have some importance for US defense industry, but xAI ? We will be investing in Elon's private venture, at the price that he himself set and which is at least 2 orders of magnitude too high...

TheAlchemist··on OpenAI closes funding round at an $852B valuation
"Commited capital" - is this the same commited as the $500B for the Stargate project ?

Not gonna lie, I hate those announcements lately. It's full bullshit mode, worse than the Dot-com bubble. Numbers don't make any sense, any more, and yet journalist don't ask any real questions...

TheAlchemist··on Iran launched unsuccessful attack on UK's Diego Garcia
The way this war is shown to us (West) is very loopsided - Iran was never going to be able to stop the bombing and they knew it. But they still retain most of their ability to blow up anything they want around their country, which is most of oil and gas fields in the Middle East, and this time they actually proved it.

We like to think we're winning, but are we ? Iran leadership is supposedly decimated, missile capabilities destroyed etc. And yet, when Israel attacked their gas field, they immediately wiped out 17% of Qatari gas productions capacities which will take 5 years to rebuild and they could have wiped out everything. Seems their leadership structure is doing just fine.

As for all the killed - what did we actually achieve ? Replace Khamenei with his son - a guy who had all of his family blown up to pieces by US / Israeli ? That should do wonders to Iran's future relationship with those countries.

TheAlchemist··on Iran launched unsuccessful attack on UK's Diego Garcia
I know. I'm just saying that the way we talk about 'precision strikes' in the west, make one feel like only the target is eliminated, while in reality we usually blow half of the building the target was in, along with all the people. I would actually be interested by a poll on what people in the US think about how many innocent people are killed in a precision or elimination strike on average - I bet it would be something like less than 1.
