TechieKid··on Intel exiting the PC business as it stops investment in the Intel NUC
Any links to said "troubling rumors about Arc Gen 2"?
TechieKid··on Windows NT on 600MHz machine opens apps instantly. What happened?
You can search with / on Firefox.
TechieKid··on Put an io_uring on it – Exploiting the Linux Kernel (2022)
Also relevant news that Google has disabled io_uring for apps on Android and disabled it entirely on Chrome OS and production Google servers since 60% of the exploits (~$1M worth) submitted to the Google Vulnerability Rewards Program have been for io_uring: https://security.googleblog.com/2023/06/learnings-from-kctf-...
TechieKid··on Rejecting data demands, ExpressVPN removes VPN servers in India
Sidechannels in Signal is news to me. Can you provide some keywords to search for, or any links?
TechieKid··on I couldn't debug the code because of my name
Discover (discover.com) currently has a similar bug where it'll allow me to login with my password, but will not accept the same password in the 'Change password' workflow as the old password, complaining about it being invalid. (shrug)
TechieKid··on Ask HN: Managing career progression for those with no interest in progressing?
Is this across titles or even for promotions within the same title?
TechieKid··on Intel’s Arc GPUs will compete with GeForce and Radeon in early 2022
Phoronix has been covering the Linux driver development for the cards as they happen: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=search&q=DG2
TechieKid··on SolarWinds hackers were able to access Microsoft source code
The update literally says that "found no evidence of access to production services or customer data."
TechieKid··on U.S. government limits exports of artificial intelligence software
As a person in the US who is not a PR or citizen and has worked on things the US Government likes to know are being exported, even exposure of the knowledge to a citizen of a target country is "deemed export." Google will probably have to reorganize its research center to comply with this and bring AI research that falls under this restriction back to the US. I don't disagree that it's futile though.
TechieKid··on Apple's products are getting harder to use, ignore principles of design (2015)
I'm sure you know this, but, I think at least since Windows 7, while having the Alt+Tab "popup" open, you can use the arrow keys while holding Alt down to directly navigate to the window you want to open. Very useful if, like me, you have 20 windows of browser tabs open, and the application you want is in the middle of the list.
TechieKid··on Tell HN: I came up with an interesting way to do decentralized account recovery
Plenty of comments now describing the fallout of token amounts.
TechieKid··on Is Firefox better than Chrome? It comes down to privacy
Firefox uses Ctrl+Shift+Q to quit the entire browser now on Windows and Linux based platforms, presumably because of that reason. You might not need that Firefox extension anymore.
TechieKid··on Mozilla will reportedly launch a paid version of Firefox this fall
Why would you not use ProtonMail? Genuine case of out of the loop.
TechieKid··on Linus Torvalds on Why ARM Won't Win the Server Space
Usage of punctuation would make your attempt at communication more likely to serve its purpose.
TechieKid··on The Library of Congress has launched a new crowd-sourced transcription tool
Counter example: Wikipedia
TechieKid··on IBM acquires Red Hat
Assuming you are thinking of Thinkpads, IBM hasn't owned that since 2006.
TechieKid··on Tutanota, the First Encrypted Email App on F-Droid
Also available on plain-vanilla Android. No affiliation.
TechieKid··on H-1B: As immigration furor roils Silicon Valley, Canada smooths way for techies
It's downvoted because you, like your profile says, are "opinionated, inconsistent, irrelevant, irreverent and incontrovertible", and regardless of the number of times you are told that you are wrong and that H1Bs are dual-intent visas, keep parroting the same trash in every immigration related thread. Please quit proliferating nonsense untruths.

And here, for future reference, because short of a citation of the law, and probably even then, you won't quit spreading junk knowledge:

Better reference: https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/8/1184

b) Presumption of status; written waiver Every alien (other than a nonimmigrant described in subparagraph (L) or (V) of section 1101(a)(15) of this title, and other than a nonimmigrant described in any provision of section 1101(a)(15)(H)(i) of this title except subclause (b1) of such section) shall be presumed to be an immigrant until he establishes to the satisfaction of the consular officer, at the time of application for a visa, and the immigration officers, at the time of application for admission, that he is entitled to a nonimmigrant status under section 1101(a)(15) of this title.

TechieKid··on The #1 Office Perk? Natural Light
Why don't you exchange cubes with one of your colleagues who values natural light more?
TechieKid··on How to Hire
Since great-grandparent isn't responding, if anyone in the know could help out the rest of us on the outside, that would be awesome.
TechieKid··on How to Hire
Please be more sensitive about declaring something you know 'everyone knows.' Especially when in the same breath you admit to not knowing what red book parent and grandparent are talking about. While I don't match the example, folks born in 1997 when the book came out are just about graduating college in a couple of years, and expecting everyone to know all the nooks and crannies of computer science is not at all feasible. TechieKid··on Uber Self-Driving Car That Struck Pedestrian Wasn’t Set to Stop in an Emergency
By running over anything that gets in the way, apparently.
TechieKid··on Judge Rules Trump Can’t Block People on Twitter
While I realize the article/judge's opinion specifically calls out political speech, I'm fairly sure that applies to all speech, and the political speech subset was probably chosen by the plaintiffs as an easier path to victory.
TechieKid··on US cell carriers are selling access to real-time phone location data
Welp, sorry.
TechieKid··on US cell carriers are selling access to real-time phone location data
Several recent HN stories have had this kind of comment (first noticed with the Securus submission) that's a weird mix of "You have nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide" and "They will never come for you, you're too unimportant." Is this a sustained campaign or just a way for folks who have contributed to these issues to feel good about themselves?
TechieKid··on King’s Quest: The Tale of How an Nvidia Engineer’s Cube Became His Castle (2014)
> But it was incredibly quiet and peaceful inside, it was like having an office

Hint, hint, nVidia.

TechieKid··on Think You’ve Got Your Credit Freezes Covered? Think Again
The answer is registered mail, return receipt requested, and a complaint with the CFPB, although how on-the-ball that agency will be since the new administrator was appointed is YMMV.
TechieKid··on Three-day no-meeting schedule for engineers
> We have a written daily roundup (like a 10 minute standup but it's written and it's asynchronous)

How does this help with discovery of issues that other folks on the team may have experience/suggestions solving? I.e. do you require everyone to read the daily round up?

TechieKid··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2018)
1] As a suggestion, the travelbot should be available to try right on the home page.

2] Perhaps also provide English translations of the content that provides more information, e.g. the advantages of international hotel chains, etc?

3] It looks like you are limited to trips to South Africa only at the moment. Perhaps call that out clearly?
