> That's not what the zoom buttons do in Pixel Camera and it doesn't switch at exactly the telephoto magnification zoom value but rather adjusts when it switches based on the available light because the telephoto camera can't handle low light as well.

Ooh TIL, thank you, I just tried it out, that's definitely a bit confusing. Would it work to just have 2/3 buttons that switch between the cameras? Or is this not possible (because you need to supply a zoom level)?

> You can swipe down for settings and can swipe left/right between modes.

That works definitely better!

> It shouldn't consume more power than Pixel Camera. Don't know why that would be the case.

Will keep an eye out on this, but after quickly testing the few things you mentioned in your comment my phone already got a bit warmer.

> We'd need them to add this to the extension API.

Ah okay, that's a bummer!

SushiHippie··on Why Is Japan So Weak in Software? [video]
My only experience with japanese software is for cameras (e.g. mobile Apps which can connect to your camera via bluetooth/wifi) and these apps (I used Nikon and Panasonic apps) are definitely not that great, which you can also see from the reviews these apps get on the App Stores.

There is also a Video "Why are all cameras Japanese" https://youtube.com/watch?v=JKMsjXs4uq4 at minute 13:10 he also talks about the software culture in Japan.

He states (alledgedly sourced from an Interview of Software Developers in Japan) that Japan does not really respect software development as a career and it's viewed like a blue collar career, meanwhile craftsmanship and hardware stuff is considered a white collar career.

> Make sure you're using Latency mode to match what Pixel Camera does rather than Quality mode which purposely delays capturing until focus lock.

Aah okay that's what this toggle means, thats definitely better.

But my biggest gripes with the GrapheneOS camera app are:

1. The Zoom slider: You can't select the different lenses easily (I'd need to set the zoom slider to exactly 5x to get the zoom lens without digital zoom, which is not that easy) and there is no way to quickly reset it to 1x. I also think the position for this slider would be better at the bottom (where most other camera apps put it)

2. The brightness and zoom slider are rather hard to hit, I maybe have a bit too fat fingers for these? (The brightness slider also does not seem to work in night mode) I also can't see the zoom/brightness values while sliding and the Google Camera App allows for more smoother/finer control.

Same with the little arrow in the top left corner, it always takes like 3-5 hits to open the menu. Never had this issue in the Google Camera App.

3. I need to use the QR Code mode to scan qr codes. I did bind the Google Camera app to double click the power button so I can easily take pictures and scan QR Codes, without the need to tap anything else. But It's definitely a cool feature that the GrapheneOS camera can scan many more Code Types and also that the GrapheneOS Camera removes exif data by default

4. The mode slider at the bottom doesn't let me scroll further than one mode, this means I'd need to swipe thrice to get to the QR Code mode from the Video mode (or tap twice) because when in QR Code mode I can't see the Video mode and vice versa

5. I currently tested it out for writing this comment and my phone definitely got way warmer than when using the Google Camera App. And it used 5% Battery while being active for 7 minutes. EDIT: very weird it did now vanish from the Battery Usage list in the Settings, and in the App Info it also says it did not use any battery since the last full charge (It did before)

6. I think it does not support the Astrophotgraphy (Tripod) mode for the Night Mode.

These are all not huge issues and most people who just want to quickly take some pictures are probably not really bothered by this. But I use the Phone Camera very often (its even one of the reasons I went for the Pixel 8 Pro instead of the normal 8, to get the extra zoom lens) so these issues made me install the Google Camera App.

Don't get me wrong, I still think it is really cool that GrapheneOS can ship an Open Source camera app which achieves the same Image Quality with added features like the HDR+, QR and Night Mode, which is probably enough for most users, and I wouldn't want to trade GrapheneOS for any other OS (see my comments: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41238691 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41241594 and https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39145200)

SushiHippie··on Magic Wormhole: get things from one computer to another, safely
It's actually possible via https://winden.app which uses the wormhole protocol (compared to wormhole.app which is not affiliated with the matic wormhole project), once you upload a file there it will show you a link which is basically winden.app/#passphrase

As it uses the anchor tag # the passphrase doesn't even get sent to the server hosting the website, so it all happens client side.

SushiHippie··on Magic Wormhole: get things from one computer to another, safely
Maybe syncthing fits your use case better?

https://syncthing.net/

SushiHippie··on Magic Wormhole: get things from one computer to another, safely
I'm assuming it won't be open-source? I don't really see why I would use a propietary/non FOSS version of this (magic wormhole).

The great thing about magic wormhole is that the protocol is open, and anyone could implement it for themselve.

For example there is the reference implementation in python, then there are implementations golang, rust and haskell. Flutter bindings so you can use it in flutter. Multiple GUI implementations for all operating systems, even mobile and the web (via WASM). It has also been implemented into other open source projects like tmux or termshark. https://magic-wormhole.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ecosystem.ht...

Also other comments in this thread mention many already existing alternatives e.g. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41276443

Basically what I'm saying is, I'm locked to the applications you and your team have built. I couldn't "hack" something quickly together to integrate it into other things, I couldn't extend your clients by modifying the source code and I also couldn't verify that your code really does what it says (E2EE, privacy-respecting).

> What I hope sets Zynk apart is that it is built to literally be used by anyone, be it a power user, or my mom.

I'm sure that a more friendly UI/UX for non power users would be great, but IMO it would be even better if it used an open protocol like magic wormhole, this way the receiver does not also need to install a Zynk Client, but can use whatever he is already using. There is for example https://winden.app/about already exists, which seems to be a very user friendly UI, is open source and works without installing it.

Maybe I'm just too much of a "power user" (I use Linux on my computers/servers and a custom ROM on my phone) to understand what zynk could provide to me.

But I think (which means I don't have sources to back this up) the audience which does not care about e2ee/privacy already uses the solutions implemented into their OS (like AirDrop/Quick Share, share via iCloud/Google Drive/OneDrive/...) and from my experience the audience that cares about privacy/e2ee has a large overlap with the Open Source community which is more likely to use solutions like magic wormhole or croc.

I also use GraphenOS and the regular google camera app, everything except the AI features works , and the camera quality is on par with what I got while using the Stock OS for a day (it was also one of my biggest fears, that the Camera quality would be worse, that's why I compared it).

I've tried the Graphene Camera app, but to be honest the UX is a bit janky, but I think the image quality is basically the same.

SushiHippie··on Google Pixel 9 Pro
Probably the top reason I wanted to get GrapheneOS was the privacy/security aspect of it, this includes: no google play services by default, multiple user profiles (more than the Stock OS can have), a network permission for apps (this normally can't be toggled), disabling all usb data connections (can easily be activated in the Settings if I need it), Bootloader can be locked again after flashing the ROM and much more.

It also has very frequent updates, and my phone will get them for a long time (also true for the Stock Android on Pixels, but that one really sucks), which was also very important for me, as I want to be able to use my phone as long as possible.

What made this even more appeling is the possibility to install sandboxed google play in a seperate profile/user for apps that really need it, which works surprisingly well, and even then the google play services don't run with elevated permissions like they normally do, but with the same permissions like other apps.

And the battery life is insane, if I don't use my phone it basically does not loose any battery, and even with heavy usage I don't need to charge it daily.

So GrapheneOS was the easiest way to start degoogling (kind of ironic using Google Hardware) my mobile phone, while still being able to run nearly all of the Apps I need.

I only bought a Pixel because of GrapheneOS.

I think I've never had this few issues with a phone. (I only had Samsung phones before this)

It feels even better than the Android that the Pixels ship with, I used it for a day before I flashed GrapheneOS, and I can completely understand why one would not buy a Pixel again if they only experienced the Stock OS.

Nice very minimal and fast!

FYI if you convert to JPG, it will download a file with a .bin extension.

Would it be possible to retain the original file name + some extra info, for example:

I 'upload' the file space.png and I convert it to jpg, 1080p, medium and then the file name would be something like: space-1080p-medium.jpeg

> From tests I've read, if you would compile something or render or encode/transcode (on CPU) or similar, there is a measurable effect. It will take only little bit longer but consume noticeably less energy.

One of my "benchmarks" included compiling a large rust project, I don't have the exact numbers, but in tge end it was such a tiny fraction (something like 5 seconds difference, with a compilation time of 2 minutes). Which is definitely not worth the ~70% increased power consumption.

> I'm curious why it is not possible to adjust these values in only few watt steps.

Don't know probably to keep it simple (and maybe nor to Fry your CPU if you swap your CPU to one which is rated for e.g. 65W TDP).

This "ECO Mode" has three settings:

"OFF" which means max TDP (in the case of my CPU 170W)

"105W",

"ON" which is 65W.

It also says in the description that "105W" mode only exists for CPUs with 170W TDP.

Also if you look at the other CPUs from AMD you'll see that they only sell CPUs with these TDP numbers and additionally 120W (the x3d variants), that's probably why they chose theese numbers.

> At this point, one more hostile corporation does not make much difference. I plan to rebuild ZLUDA starting from the pre-AMD codebase. Funding for the project is coming along and I hope to be able to share the details in the coming weeks. It will have a different scope and certain features will not come back. I wanted it to be a surprise, but one of those features was support for NVIDIA GameWorks. You always have the option to limit the TDP via the BIOS with nearly no performance hit (at least according to the benchmarks I made, and I also feel no difference when using my PC)

(Reposting a comment I made two weeks ago https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41043961)

In my BIOS I can activate a "ECO Mode", which lets me decide if I want to run my 7950x on full 170W TDP, 105W TDP or 60W TDP.

I benchmarked it, the difference between 170 and 105 is basically zero, and the difference to 60W is just a few percent of a performance hit, but way worth it, as it's ~0.3€/kWh over here.
