SushiHippie··on AMD claims Arm ISA doesn't offer efficiency advantage over x86
I just searched for the asahi linux (Linux for M Series Macs) battery life, and found this blog post [0].

> During active development with virtual machines running, a few calls, and an external keyboard and mouse attached, my laptop running Asahi Linux lasts about 5 hours before the battery drops to 10%. Under the same usage, macOS lasts a little more than 6.5 hours. Asahi Linux reports my battery health at 94%.

SushiHippie··on HN Search isn't ingesting new data since Friday
Was this the same issue as on February 1st? Or are these outages unrelated?
SushiHippie··on Where's Firefox going next?
FWIW about:config is available in beta and nightly on android, my main browser was nightly for a while but it sometimes was too unstable, so I switched to beta as my daily, which seems to be stable.

SushiHippie··on Bye-bye Windows gaming? SteamOS officially expands past the Steam Deck
The Legion Go S with Windows will cost $599 and the Legion Go S with SteamOS will cost $499. I suppose those will be the same hardware wise. So a $100 difference

SushiHippie··on Ford CEO on why it's so difficult for legacy car companies to get software right
Funfact:

There is a German saying: "Ford kaufen, Ford fahren, Ford schmeißen"

which translates to

"Buy a Ford, drive a Ford (or "drive away"), throw away [a Ford]."

As Ford sounds the same as "fort" and "fortfahren" -> "drive away", "fortschmeißen" -> "throw away"

SushiHippie··on Linux EFI Zboot Abandoning "Compression Library Museum", Focusing on Gzip, ZSTD
lz4 is pretty awesome for ZFS compression. It has nearly no impact on read/write and writing/reading data is sometimes even faster than without compression.

Though I use zstd on zfs datasets which I rarely read/write to i.e. backups.

Amazing, thanks for sharing!

What year was this? (I'm Curious, as you mentioned 2012 was the last year you used at the time of the E-Mail)

SushiHippie··on Kagi Search API
My estimation wasn't that wrong if I would've left out the first part, but a few weeks was maybe too hopeful ;)
SushiHippie··on Kagi Search API
Over a year ago they said something along the lines, that they pay around 1-2ct per search query (for API calls to the different search providers they use). If this is still true, then this seems to be fairly priced.

Though If the API will get available, I won't use it as much as I want to.

I have ~1700 searches per month and use the professional plan (10$/month), which would be 1.7*$25 = $42.5 per month, which I'm glad I don't need to pay.

SushiHippie··on Kagi Search API
FYI I Just asked them this:

> Any ETA when the Search API will be available for professional? Ball park of a few weeks or more like 2+ months?

And the answer was "2 months" from Vlad (Kagi Founder)

EDIT: After my comment he also commented this on this thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42307588

SushiHippie··on Kagi Search API
(Kagi User since two years)

The assistant beta was ~1 year in beta.

Assistant had many bugs in the early stages, but it's different kind of beast than Search API (more things that can go wrong). With Search API it's probably "only" billing/UI bugs which they want to catch in the beta and maybe some problems with the search results from the API endpoint

Though in this case I'd say a few weeks, maybe 2 months. (They keep things in beta longer than it needs to be, to be completely sure nothing goes haywire especially if it's billing related like the pay per use API endpoint).

SushiHippie··on Advent of Code 2024
Looks pretty neat I'll take some inspiration from this.

Though you shouldn't upload the text and inputs of the puzzles (maybe .gitignore them) as per [0]:

> Can I copy/redistribute part of Advent of Code? Please don't. Advent of Code is free to use, not free to copy. If you're posting a code repository somewhere, please don't include parts of Advent of Code like the puzzle text or your inputs. If you're making a website, please don't make it look like Advent of Code or name it something similar.

SushiHippie··on Show HN: Open-source private home security camera system (end-to-end encryption)
Sure, just wanted to tell you about it, as this seems to be defacto standard for foss android apps, for example most if not all https://matrix.org clients use it for push notifications (when you use their de googled build, or don't have play services) available. I also use a Signal fork with UnifiedPush and have some server alert scripts which post to my self-hosted ntfy instance, and the ntfy app itself will display them (otherwise for the Messengers, the Notifications will be from the messenger app itself, as these apps get "notified" aboout a notification and then do their own thing).
SushiHippie··on Advent of Code 2024
