SupremumLimit

I've written a series of books called C++11/14 Rocks. I blog about C++11/14 at http://cpprocks.com.

I've created a Ruby and a C++11 video course for pluralsight.com.

I'm also a founder at Aotea Studios (http://aoteastudios.com). We make training products for business analysts with a focus on visual communication.

I'm an experienced C++, Ruby and CoffeeScript developer.

SupremumLimit··on Who Stole the Four-Hour Workday?
You have to understand that no comment is about describing reality as it is, but rather someone's attempt to make reality conform to their own ideological prejudices.
SupremumLimit··on We have C++14
If you just want to learn about the features introduced in C++11/14, I wrote compiler-specific books about those: http://cpprocks.com
SupremumLimit··on Stripe launches in Australia
I think it might be OK for one-off payments, but I couldn't find anything other than manual setup of recurring payments on their web site. Price wise it's comparable to Paypal though. The trouble for me is that it doesn't integrate with my shopping cart (getdpd.com).
SupremumLimit··on Stripe launches in Australia
Aside from merchant account setup, last time I looked (4 years ago), Payment Express worked out to be really expensive when charging in USD. I think it was in part due to merchant account/currency conversion charges by the bank. It was significantly more expensive than Paypal. I don't know if the situation has changed since then.
SupremumLimit··on C++ Standards Committee Meeting in Rapperswil, June 2014
If you already know C++ and just want to get up to speed with C++11/14 features, I wrote several books aimed at specific feature sets supported by different compilers (GCC, Clang, MSVC). Check them out at http://cpprocks.com.
SupremumLimit··on Stripe launches in Australia
What are you using now?
SupremumLimit··on Stripe launches in Australia
I wonder if Stripe is planning to launch in New Zealand any time soon - it's very close to Australia :) I'm really keen to stop relying on Paypal for accepting payments.
SupremumLimit··on New RFS: One Million Jobs
Great quote! Job creation is such a short-sighted goal, when we should really be looking at an organised transition to less and less work. Things are going that way anyway, but in an entirely uncontrolled fashion which will lead (perhaps is leading already?) to a lot of social problems. Instead of attempting to go down that path, Y Combinator just wants to prop up the existing system it seems?
SupremumLimit··on Xiki: The Command Revolution
This is a very interesting project! I backed it.

I've only tried Xiki in a semi-broken state for now, via the SublimeXiki plugin and with Ruby 2.0 (which mostly doesn't work).

One question I have is how are you planning to handle navigation? E.g. when a command produces large output, it isn't very convenient to scroll around in the file. I didn't see this addressed in the videos.

SupremumLimit··on Introducing Mapbox GL
I'm confused, is there a WebGL version of the framework as well? It would be really great to have that!
SupremumLimit··on What if C++ looked more like Python or CoffeeScript?
If you squint in just the right way so as not to see any of the braces, semicolons and parentheses in the first example, then naturally we are going to disagree about the amount of noise :)
SupremumLimit··on What if C++ looked more like Python or CoffeeScript?
I think generic lambdas provide for this in C++14.
SupremumLimit··on What if C++ looked more like Python or CoffeeScript?
I see what you mean. Yes, the if in a macro is a problem. I haven't addressed macros, that's a whole different can of worms.
SupremumLimit··on What if C++ looked more like Python or CoffeeScript?
This seems to be missing backslashes. I haven't considered how to deal with preprocessor macros, but the if statement converts very simply:

    if !__allocation__.IsRetry()
        __object__ = __allocation__.ToObjectChecked()
        if __object__ == (ISOLATE)->heap()->exception(); RETURN_EMPTY
        RETURN_VALUE
This isn't ambiguous like the example you suggested before.
SupremumLimit··on What if C++ looked more like Python or CoffeeScript?
My goal was to make the code remain recognisably C++, but remove some of the noise.
SupremumLimit··on What if C++ looked more like Python or CoffeeScript?
I'd make this parse as "if (a) { if (b) { c; d; } }" and leave it at that. One of the reasons for significant indentation is to discourage this kind of code layout because it's hard to read.
SupremumLimit··on What if C++ looked more like Python or CoffeeScript?
I think uniform initialization needs a lot of work before it can become the one and only mechanism for initialization. Currently it isn't anywhere near uniform enough. But aside from that, I think it would be fine to use curly braces for initialization as long as they are freed from the burden of delimiting code blocks.
SupremumLimit··on What if C++ looked more like Python or CoffeeScript?
You could do it by separating the body with a semicolon:

    if something_is_true(); log("warning!")
I haven't really considered the preprocessor as I prefer to avoid it as much as possible.

As somebody posted in another comment, it looks like it's already been done: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7444459
SupremumLimit··on What if C++ looked more like Python or CoffeeScript?
Interesting, thanks for the link. This does look quite similar!
SupremumLimit··on What if C++ looked more like Python or CoffeeScript?
Well I've written quite a bit of CoffeeScript, and while I had a few issues with incorrect code translation to JavaScript, I don't recall ever having problems with mis-indented code.
SupremumLimit··on What if C++ looked more like Python or CoffeeScript?
Yeah, I expected a mixed response. The "missed tab problem" always crops up and is vastly overblown. C++ of course has the "misplaced semicolon" counterpart to it:

    while (i < 100); //loop body is empty
    {
        // random unnamed block instead of loop body
    }
Oh, and it's kind of difficult to get a bigger screen on a laptop.
SupremumLimit··on What if C++ looked more like Python or CoffeeScript?
Well, I didn't say that Python is the pinnacle of minimalism :) However, it's hard to reduce C++ to Lisp syntax without completely changing the nature of the language.
SupremumLimit··on What if C++ looked more like Python or CoffeeScript?
Any specific reasons why it's error-prone? I've just seen someone post a link to SPECS in the comments to the post - it's interesting but takes a very different direction. I wanted the code to remain recognisably C++.

SupremumLimit··on Sea Change – The Pacific's Perilous Turn
As somebody else mentioned elsewhere in the thread, get involved with 350.org, or alternatively Greenpeace. AFAIK, these are the largest and most effective organisations in the climate change area.

We're well past the point where changing individual behaviour will be enough (and also, this strategy has been promoted over the last 30 years and largely failed - emissions are still rising). We need protests and actions that will lead to policy changes around the world and the shutdown of the fossil fuel industry.

SupremumLimit··on MVC is dead, it's time to MOVE on (2012)
I think you make a good point, but there seems to be more to the OP's events and operations than you suggest. The 'events' are implied to be broadcast versus 'messages' which are sent to a particular object (i.e. point-to-point) in languages that I know.

The OP is also suggesting a hierarchy of 'operations', with sub-operations communicating with the parent operations. I don't think this maps directly onto language features (again, in languages I'm aware of).

I'd be interested to hear which languages you had in mind, and some more detail on how you envisage the mapping to language features.
