Sujan··on Death by Database: a short story of how a bad schema can hurt you company
Is that really "bad database design"? Sounds a lot more like "perfectly fine design for the original use case".

Re/Abusing a customer database based mass mailing tool to send non-customer mass mailings is a new use case, so requires changes either a) on the database side - or b) in the mass mailing tool (to use another database table that is not connected to the customer side of things). I would have preferred b) for many reasons.

Sujan··on John Hancock will include fitness tracking in all life insurance policies
Actual title says "John Hancock will include fitness tracking in all life insurance policies", not "... require ...".
Sujan··on You Don't Need Moment.js
Why and how are the suggested alternatives worse regarding the aspects you mentioned?
Sujan··on Notes on some artefacts
artefact... I like that as a "label" for this. A bit like a glitch in the matrix.
Sujan··on Leaving Apple and Google: /e/ first beta
Which is why the section in the article continues:

> We understand that this textual representation is not ideal for talking about the project and searching about it.

> We have decided to hold off on change to the name for the beta release. Along with the v1 stable version, we will introduce a new name for the mobile system that will be easy to remember and to adopt.

So: They are aware and have a plan.

Sujan··on Introducing Azure DevOps
I don't know of any, but are very happy about this announcement because of this reason.
Sujan··on Bullshit Jobs
I like mine as well:

Sujan··on Innovative Anti-Seismic Mechanical Watch
Is red dot an actual award-award or an pay-and-get-one-award?
Sujan··on Serverless Docker Beta
Oh, and to make this more than a simple rant/whine, some constructive suggestions that could possibly solve the problem:

- Normal video with playback controls?

- Add a clearly distinguishable "this is where it starts" screen.

- Is there maybe a way to control playback of a gif via JS/HTML? Add a "restart" button.

- Add a timeline into the .gif that shows where I am (similar to usual video player).

Sujan··on Serverless Docker Beta
Am I the only one having problems to follow .gif "demos"?

When I get to the image, it is in the middle of everything and I don't really have an idea what is going on. Even watching it multiple times, I am not sure where it starts, ends, what the individual steps are.

Or is it because I just don't know enough about this stuff?

Sujan··on The next ten years of Instapaper
It is impossible for fines ($ or €) to be lower than market share (% or number of users).

Also, what you probably meant is still not possible: As Instapaper was free under Pinterest, market share was connected to $0 of revenue. So any fine would be greater than the revenue of the app's European customers.

Sujan··on Spotify GDPR data export: user receives 250MB containing every interaction
Has someone started a list of GDPR data export requests and their results? I wonder what interesting information is out there...
Sujan··on Facebook Q2 2018 Earnings
So? Advertisers pay per click or even sale, so they don't care the least how many people "saw" their ad before that. Some agencies even sell this as a "branding" side effect.
Sujan··on To cash in on Kindle Unlimited, a cabal of authors gamed Amazon’s algorithm
Yeah, as far as I know this has always been the official wording.

What makes me skeptical here is the use of "high precision" and what there could be to improve... a page was either viewed for the time necessary to read it or not. Over all readers of a book, it should not be too hard to find out the distribution of valid read times of a page.

Unless, of course, you don't have that data, but only some snapshots of which page is opened (e.g. when a sync to the cloud servers happens).

Shame the Kindle APIs are undocumented :/

Sujan··on To cash in on Kindle Unlimited, a cabal of authors gamed Amazon’s algorithm
What part of the text are you referring to exactly?

There was a sentence that Amazon's metric isn't influenced by big fonts or other formatting choices (they probably just use a plain text version of the text to define what a "page" is) and 'that the KENPC system (Kindle Edition Normalized Page Count) recorded pages read with “high precision”' - which doesn't actually mean that much.

Did I miss the interesting part?

My point was mostly based that I know it was that way for a long time, and that things like stuffing or those newsletter signups or competition in the back of the book wouldn't have any influence if it still wouldn't be this way.

Sujan··on To cash in on Kindle Unlimited, a cabal of authors gamed Amazon’s algorithm
Fascinating that Kindle's still don't track which pages actually were "read" (as in "skipping from page 1 to page 100, doesn't meant 2-99 have been read). Basing the author payout system of Kindle Unlimited on that metric is the (technical) root cause here.
Sujan··on OBike Refund in Singapore, Australia, and Malaysia
I asked as a comment to original post already [1], how are the ICOs and oBike directly connected? I didn't really understand that :/

Sujan··on OBike Refund in Singapore, Australia, and Malaysia
For some context, here is a reply of the accused / singled out person on their Twitter account:

> Some fake news circulating around lately, to clarify: 1. I'm a shareholder of oBike, owning 23.58% stake, my title has always been Founding Investor&Chairman in that company 2. Avazu was founded by me sorely, my grandparents are 80+ and can't even handle computers

> 3. oBike Singapore has been shut down due to economics, the decision was made among all shareholders, no need to generalize/personalize 4. oBike has no intention or need to run away with deposit, instead the company is proactively looking for a solution with the related parties

> 5. I'm an investor and shareholder in 100+ startups and companies globally, I'm also the direct founder of DotC United Group, some of these ventures cooperate with other block chain companies, that doesn't mean all these companies belong to me.

What's the connection between oBike and the ICOs (besides Yi Shi beeing involved in both)?

You’re welcome.
Sujan··on Capacitor: Universal Web Applications
Once all your plugins are supported in one way or another (Capacitor plugin or compat for Cordova plugin) you should just be able to install Capacitor in your project and see if it all works. Required code modifications in your app should be limited to the interaction with native.
Sujan··on Capacitor: Universal Web Applications
Capacitor is not Cordova plus a bit of stuff, but a total reimagining how such a tool should work. Cordova for example is defined by dynamic platforms you can add or remove, or that builds are (or can be) done with the CLI. Capacitor has none of that.
Sujan··on Capacitor: Universal Web Applications
You commit it all (except what .gitignore already ignores or your IDE adds), the native projects are are not build but source artifacts here. Benefit: Once the project is created, you can modify and adapt it in any way you want and have those changes versioned like all other code changes.
Sujan··on Capacitor: Universal Web Applications
I had an early look and wrote a bit about it as well: Introduction article that touches on all the relevant bits at https://ionic.zone/capacitor/overview and an Overview of the CLI at https://ionic.zone/capacitor/cli
Sujan··on Do not use NPM 5.7
This is relevant to the information I posted in my comment here how?

It is not.

Sujan··on Do not use NPM 5.7
Reading this and the comments here really makes me feel sorry for the npm people.

If you are reading this: You are doing great work, I wish you the energy and strength to ignore the trolls.

Sujan··on Do not use NPM 5.7
Title should be changed to 5.7.0 as newly released 5.7.1 fixes the bug.
Sujan··on OpenSCHUFA – Reverse-engineering the algorithm of the German credit score agency
Might be worth to tell the full story, as well:

- OpenSCHUFA was initiated by Open Knowledge Foundation Deutschland and Algorithmwatch, two independent and established NGOs.

- Algorithmwatch is supported by a foundation/trust called "Bertelsmann Stiftung".

- There is also a company called "Bertelsmann", which owns Arvato Infoscore, a competitor to SCHUFA.

- The Bertelsmann Stiftung (which is supporting Algorithmwatch which is co-initiator of OpenSCHUFA) owns a majority of shares of the company (that owns Arvator Infoscore, a competitor to SCHUFA), and some people say the foundation and company are tightly tied together.

- And last but not least Schufa now places in the press, that this is a big conflict of interest.
