StuffMaster··on Creator of "Dirty Jobs" Mike Rowe testifies to Congress
Around here they're trying to increase the college graduation rate at all costs, education and merit be damned. It's a symptom of the same "everyone must be degreed" mentality.
StuffMaster··on The Rise of "Logical Punctuation".
Yeah, I thought the period-inside-quotes thing was stupid and only used it when I had to for school. Stupid stupid stupid.
StuffMaster··on Ask HN: Any advice for a developer wanting to work in SF?
I'm no expert, but your resume looks fine to me. Skills and experience are the most important things.
StuffMaster··on GNUnet
With Freenet, you allocate storage, and content gets distributed throughout the network based on popularity. It's designed so that it is impossible to know what is in even your own store. Files must be "inserted". You can't really perform a search.

If GNUnet is like other file sharing, you share files while you are online, responding to searches and transferring files that are requested.

StuffMaster··on Why the White House situation room photo is so powerful
You mean history takes place in ordinary rooms with ordinary people?

I do hate it how hollywood over-dramatizes everything.

StuffMaster··on Mozilla Chromeless 0.2
I want it to run in a separate process and minimize to the system tray though...:(
StuffMaster··on My Experience as a Female CS Major
I'm not speaking of academics so much as tinkering, for which computers are the ultimate toy.

When thinking about the geek or IT fields, I expect that people should like figuring stuff out, the typical nerd/engineer mindset. That's not everybody in CS programs I know, but my inner geek wants it to be.

StuffMaster··on My Experience as a Female CS Major
>expected to just figure stuff out

I'm not trying to belittle people who need help, but those who don't like to figure stuff out might be in the wrong field...

StuffMaster··on A Rough Guide to Social Skills for Awkward Smart People
>When discussing something with some one there are occasions when I'm genuinely curious as to why they have a certain line of reasoning. I want to ask "why do you think that?" but it always comes off condescending.

Don't use an insulting or accusative tone, use a curious tone. It makes all the difference.

StuffMaster··on Workers Leaving the Googleplex
Page too wide, and paragraphs fixed at 134 columns...not good design.
StuffMaster··on Workers Leaving the Googleplex
From what I gather from the comments, he didn't work for Google, he worked for a contracting agency.
StuffMaster··on New order of animals discovered?
OK, so what makes it so different? That's all I was looking for.
StuffMaster··on Mozilla Chromeless 0.2
I'd still like Prism to live on...it allows the user to turn any website into an application.
StuffMaster··on Why Google Should Buy the Music Industry
The music industry's legal canines need to be sawed off, one way or another.
StuffMaster··on ASCII Pronunciation Rules for Programmers [2008]
Yeah, "minus" is math and sounds wrong on the command line.
StuffMaster··on WSJ: "India Graduates Millions But Too Few Are Fit to Hire" - Yes, But .....
People used to believe that, yes, based on IQ tests which measured "innate" intelligence. We now know that IQ problem-solving abilities are influenced by one's childhood development.
StuffMaster··on Formatting your web content to be a pleasure to read
I wish I had a million upvotes for this.
StuffMaster··on Create a website using Dropbox and a text editor
That is one oversized, vertically challenged site. Ugh.
StuffMaster··on Help wanted — jobless need not apply
I've heard it mentioned on HN that big companies use mass layoffs in bad times to cut a lot of people that the don't want but can't fire. Unless a whole department gets axed, the valuable employees are usually retained.
StuffMaster··on Aerial footage of uncontacted Amazon tribe
They're living exactly as nature intended them to. Aren't animals best off in their natural environments? You obviously don't know how 'contact' works out. They would likely become alcoholic slum-dwellers, but hey, they have TV!

Your attitude is the same as China's regarding Tibet. "Save Tibet!" "Why?" "The Chinese are destroying their culture and way of life by modernizing them! Forcing them to go to school, learn Chinese and math and business and stuff, to get jobs..."

Oh wait...

StuffMaster··on US manufacturing still tops China’s by nearly 46 percent
Yeah, it's very non-obvious to the layman that they're talking about value rather than production.
StuffMaster··on Sleep hacks: How to Become an Early Riser
I switched my alarm to use the radio. Listening to the morning talk show (Bob and Tom show, nationwide) gets my mind going and helps wake me up.
StuffMaster··on Close Tab Behaviour in Google Chrome
Close button on the right is one of the many reasons I use Seamonkey.
StuffMaster··on A Localization Horror Story: It Could Happen To You
Oh god, large, localized ERP. This horrible though never entered my mind before.
StuffMaster··on Chromium Blog: A New Crankshaft for V8
Sounds like they borrowed the tracing idea from mozilla.
StuffMaster··on Tron done Mac II style with HTML 5 (very very geek)
That was worth it just for the preview - I don't remember seeing it when I was a kid. Pretty intense.
StuffMaster··on Joe Stump: Your city sucks (And so does mine)
The guy was afraid of flurries. I'm sure he considers all of Canada to be a horrid ice box.
StuffMaster··on Spacewar: Fanatic Life and Symbolic Death Among the Computer Bums [1972]
It was painful to assemble stuff, so they never listed out the programs. The programs and stuff just lived in there, just raw seething octal code. And one of the guys wrote a program called 'The Unknown Glitch,' which at random intervals would wake up, print out I AM THE UNKNOWN GLITCH. CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, and then it would relocate itself somewhere else in core memory, set a clock interrupt, and go back to sleep. There was no way to find it."

This is awesome.

StuffMaster··on Damning Zuckerberg IMs confirmed
I would have joked, but not in the same way. Calling his own users 'dumb fucks' for trusting him is insulting and implies that he's unethical.
StuffMaster··on The Epic Fail ... first post on Startup-Russia.com
It's written quite well except for the missing articles (a,the). Add those and I would've thought him a native English speaker.
