SpacePortKnight··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
China has over 100 million people working in manufacturing and India has only about 20 million. https://chatgpt.com/share/6ab8d391-e4e4-83eb-bddd-efd9338e71...

India's data collection is much worse than China's but we can also look at other metrics like exports. India exports less in total value than a resource-starved, tiny nation like South Korea.

https://www.perplexity.ai/search/3aba98a3-cba1-49d8-bcb4-869...

Thus, India could at least add another 100 million manufacturing jobs, along with an additional 100 million service jobs to support manufacturing in logistics, trade, maintenance, customer support, insurance, and food service.

Given the structure of Indian constitution which gives very little power to local governments to raise revenue and build infrastructure, India is structurally limited as of now from ever becoming as developed as China, let alone western countries.

I see India becoming more like Brazil than China. That's not necessarily a bad thing since even Brazil is 4-5x richer in per capita than India.

SpacePortKnight··on Bill Gates tries to install MovieMaker (2003)
This is one of the reasons why people have stopped installing software and moved all programs to web.
SpacePortKnight··on Switzerland's Federal Government Is Replacing Microsoft on 3k Computers
It's far easier to disable annoyance of windows than deal with linux for most people and especially for large organisations.
SpacePortKnight··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
I have been a software engineer for 8 years and not once I have had a jira ticket handed over to me by a senior engineer.

I have worked in startups before and currently work at bkng, and have friends at uber. Everywhere it is expected that the engineers will create their own tickets and refine them with the team. If you are in a product facing team, your PM could even help you with a PRD but I have not seen one in the last few years.

SpacePortKnight··on Global Warming at 3 °C by 2050? What's Behind the New German Climate Warning
It'll be fine, especially in EU. It's much easier to adapt and to make renewables more economically profitable than to accelerate decarbonization by raising cost of living.

Even if few days get 10C hotter in the summers, more and more houses will retrofit themsevles with ACs much like Singapore. I live in NL, and I can def see a future where District Cooling[1] becomes a thing.

If something is bound to happen, I think a better way to spend energy and money is to prepare for it. In that sense, I would like to see a study on which crops we as a human species could rotate too, what new lands could use investment and how should new housing and public infrastructure be built than constant articles like these which presents no realistic solution.

SpacePortKnight··on The case for physical media ownership
But the apartments which people can afford has gotten smaller now and also with the rise of the minimalistic culture, I have no space to put movie and games discs. I am ok with renting media. Like most people I don't re-watch movies and re-play single player games often.

imo it's just free market at play here which happens to provide value to the companies more than the consumers.

SpacePortKnight··on Windows: Microsoft broke the only thing that mattered
I disagree. Windows is still a very capable operating system. Is AI nonsense annoying? sure, but so are the ads on internet and only a tiny fraction of population uses adblockers.

Consumer buy laptops and smartphones, not operating systems. As long as there is no competing consumer product, Microsoft is not losing any meaningful share anytime soon. imo smartglasses might be more of a real threat to windows than copilot.

Here in the Netherlands, Macbook Neo is €700. That is by no measure a cheap laptop. Also at this price range there is plenty of competition from companies like Asus.

Recently I built a gaming PC, and I ended up installing Windows. Disabling windows AI features is significantly easier than dealing with small but frequent annoyance of linux distros.

SpacePortKnight··on Pentagon formally labels Anthropic supply-chain risk
Anthropic can now no longer buy new hardware and probably will be kicked out of all cloud compute. They can not also move to a different jurisdiction as exporting model weights is now considered same as exporting ICBM technology. Wow, companies in China are now more free than Anthropic. It's a death sentence, and a huge win for OpenAI.
SpacePortKnight··on Fewer H-1B visas did not mean more employment for natives (2017)
Vancouver is very close to Seattle. Would restrictions in H-1B result in increased hiring in Canada or a higher usage of L-1 visa perhaps?
SpacePortKnight··on Trump announces 100% tariffs on movies ‘produced in foreign lands’
Next up, all software produced in foreign lands would be subject to tariffs.
SpacePortKnight··on Google loses antitrust suit over search deals on phones
Apple could make a search engine but by the same logic, they wouldn't be able to make it default on their devices.
SpacePortKnight··on Is Microsoft trying to commit suicide?
All these fancy AI laptops and all I want is a fanless laptop like MBA from Intel.
SpacePortKnight··on I will always prefer to work from home
My work is 20 minutes away which consists of a 10 minute walk and a 7 minute tram. I also get free lunch at work and since I'm single, it's also the only place where I can talk to people in real life in the weekdays. Furthermore, my gym is also next to my office. So, in my case I will always prefer to work from office until I get married and start a family.
SpacePortKnight··on Chrome Users Beware: Manifest V3 Is Deceitful and Threatening (2021)
I don't understand the negative comments towards Chrome. Doesn't adblockers on Safari work the same as V3?
SpacePortKnight··on Windows Copilot's is showing third-party Ads to Windows users
Microsoft couldn't convience people to use Edge, so it is now converting Windows into a web browser.
SpacePortKnight··on Mozilla's midlife crisis has taken it from pioneer to Google's weird neighbor
I pay for Youtube Premium. I don't mind paying for things which provide me value.
SpacePortKnight··on Mozilla's midlife crisis has taken it from pioneer to Google's weird neighbor
tbh if ads on a website can not be blocked by a simple content blocker, then I'll just simply stop using the website.

Safari and Chrome V3 blocker are much more privacy friendly since the extension does not need to access the entire DOM.

SpacePortKnight··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
iPhone 15 looks better than 15 Pro. I wish the base 15 had a higher refresh rate.
SpacePortKnight··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
That does not include any tax.
SpacePortKnight··on Earth had hottest 3-months on record; unprecedented sea temps & extreme weather
USA emits almost 8 times more C02 when compared to India per capita. https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/co-emissions-per-capita

In that sense India would need to be 10B+ people to poluate as much as US / west does.

SpacePortKnight··on Earth had hottest 3-months on record; unprecedented sea temps & extreme weather
A better solution would be if most people turn vegetarian [1]

https://news.berkeley.edu/2022/02/01/global-elimination-of-m...

SpacePortKnight··on Earth had hottest 3-months on record; unprecedented sea temps & extreme weather
Only emissions per capita counts. Just because those countries have more population than entire continents of Africa and Europe, does not mean it's their fault.

USA emits almost 8 times more emission per capita when compared to India. Rather India is so poor, that it must increase it's energy generation by any means possible.

So an Indian on average consumes just 1/8 of a USA citizen.

SpacePortKnight··on UPI Payments: 10B transactions a month done, next stop 100B
India's largest denomination banknote is now just Rs. 500 or $6 after their recent ban on the Rs. 2000 notes. Thus, online payment becomes the only way to transfer any meaningful amount.
SpacePortKnight··on UPI Payments: 10B transactions a month done, next stop 100B
It's both. You can transfer/receive money to/from anyone with either a QR code, a UPI address like `batman@upi` or a mobile number.

You can also setup mandates (autopay) for recurring subscriptions like Netfix. Unlike Credit Cards, you can even bypass the merchant and directly cancel an autopay through a UPI payment app.

SpacePortKnight··on Show HN: I automated half of my typing
Years of autocomplete has already made my second language i.e. English poorer. I know words but I often forget to pronounce them because I can no longer remember their spelling. A tool like this would completely obliterate all of my skills.
SpacePortKnight··on Nvidia announces financial results for second quarter fiscal 2024
Just like existence of MariaDB does not prevent Snowflake from being worth $50B, just being good enough on laptop is not enough to replace the need for the cutting edge.
SpacePortKnight··on uBlock Origin Lite now available on Firefox
Safari already has a long list of content blockers which blocks ads by supplying a list of urls to the browser. I use Ka Block! for iOS and it works well enough.
SpacePortKnight··on Region fueled India’s population boom. Now it’s in danger
I really like how the post has been aided with the colourful illustrations.

Not many people know this but India has the most arable land in the world despite being a smaller country than Canada, Russia, China, USA, Brazil [1]. India has even more arable land than entirety of EU. [2]

While the article only briefly touches about the potential danger of climate change, I think its even more serious.

Climate change combined with poor education, low blue collar jobs and poor healthcare infrastructure, the Northern India is setting itself up for perpetual poverty when compared to South India [3].

SpacePortKnight··on Fighting for the open web [image]
I don't like copying my passwords to clipboard becase of https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Clipboard/r... and other clipboard hijacking techniques.
SpacePortKnight··on APPL $3T valuation isn’t far off – but no thanks to Vision Pro, argues Bloomberg
There is no other brand on the planet with a consistent and comprehensive product lineup as Apple. Just going to apple.com, one can see everything the company does. On top of that they made $387B in revenue last year. That is more than the GDP of New Zealand, Hong Kong or Finland for example.

Their product lineup is so simple compared to competition, that it's often the easiest to recommend their products to tech illiterate population.

Almost all android and laptop manufacturers release so many products that the many choices making buying a product frustrating as if they are designed for the sale and not use.

iPhones are also really affordable when you factor in that you can sell them later for a decent value.
