Sophistifunk··on The worst thing about Jenkins is that it works (2019)
The problem is that a real green-field re-imagination of software development needs to go back to the 70s, and back to the (these days mostly fake) metal, meaning it's a massive job that will take years to even know if you might make it. You need to start with something simple-but-useless, and grow it from there, rather than attacking a single layer or two of our current enormous tower of babel. It will be difficult to adopt because it must by definition be alien to our current workflows, and it will take forever to find users. The only way to find success is to slowly and surely build something that is so obviously good existing devs will be willing to give up tools in which they've invested years and (for many of them) their identities, just to play with it.

It requires an iron clad vision, willingness to be a pariah among the coding masses and a dictator internally, excellent communication in order to present the vision and progress to the outsiders who are interested, and piles and piles of money to pay for it for years before it becomes sustainable, however you plan to make it so.

Sophistifunk··on Large shares of consumers use social media out of a fear of missing out
That's fediverse. It's all run by people who can't be arsed running an ad network, and because it's federated the users can just go elsewhere if you did try something like that.
Sophistifunk··on The worst thing about Jenkins is that it works (2019)
As somebody who has spent his share of time interacting with Jenkins as a user, and messing around inside it as a developer, I am definitely biased. For or against, I'm not sure tho ;-)

But the problem with Jenkins is the problem with all CI. Our (software in general, not Jenkins specifically) build process are all godforsaken nightmares that would put HP Lovecraft and Rube Goldberg into rubber rooms. You can't add a bunch of extra automation to any of these systems and get something better, let alone a system that needs to be able to automate so many different and unique snowflake horrors.

Sophistifunk··on The worst thing about Jenkins is that it works (2019)
We almost made it... Still bums me out. Good to see you're still lurking broseph ;-)
Sophistifunk··on The Fediverse is an opportunity learned societies can't ignore
That's not at all why mastodon doesn't have search. It's all about stopping "bullying" when you post something stupid.
Sophistifunk··on Ask HN: What side projects landed you a job?
Move to California, go back to an office for 60 hours a week, sign my life away and swear to secrecy about my thrilling position on some compiler team? Yeah I think could say no to that.
Sophistifunk··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
It's not computers breaking you need to fear, but your engine management refusing to turn on when you've put a in third-party window washer motor that doesn't provide the correct response to some proprietary encrypted canbus query.
Sophistifunk··on Australia's overuse of antibiotics driving rate of drug-resistant infections
Bollocks, there's about seven of us, we're not going to drive anything. And we don't feed them to otherwise-healthy livestock, unlike some other countries.
Sophistifunk··on Rivian R1T is the first EV to win the longest off-road competition in the US
GP is right, but it's all cars that have become extermely samey. If you're spending Ferrari money your options have never been better, but if you're a "car person" what's for sale right now to the middle class is incredibly depressing, with the exceptions of the 86 and the Z. Several manufacturers don't even make a sedan any more.
Sophistifunk··on The C4 model for visualising software architecture (2017)
IMO the source code to aspects of the system that are best shown as graphs should be the graphs.
Sophistifunk··on Speeding up the JavaScript ecosystem – The barrel file debacle
Yeah this seems to be absolutely everywhere and entrenched, mainly because it's how npm did things :(
Sophistifunk··on Speeding up the JavaScript ecosystem – The barrel file debacle
This is the kind of thing that should be fixed by improving tooling, rather than making your source less clear. Given the opportunity that was mjs, bun, deno, etc it's clear that file-based and url-based, and relative imports are things people don't want to move away from in the current JS ecosystem, which means "barrel files" (the name makes no sense to me either) are going to remain a useful part of trying to cut down on the noise.
Sophistifunk··on Show HN: Classic Video Poker
This is rad
Sophistifunk··on Show HN: Unity like game editor running in pure WASM
I'm on an m2 pro and had the exact same experience, also Firefox.
Sophistifunk··on YouTube blocks Russell Brand from making money through its platform
If you think advertiser sensibilities and internet mobs should play any sort of part in a just justice system, I don't know what to tell you.
Sophistifunk··on YouTube blocks Russell Brand from making money through its platform
It doesn't really matter what their argument is, they simply need to have one. It's their sandbox, and they have chosen an advertiser-friendly ratchet as the driver of policy. YouTube will get more and more bland and samey as people fear the banhammer, which will get used on less and less extreme content and producers, as the "cancelling machinery" has been built and will always find the next-most-evil^tm on which to focus.

Until YouTube becomes boring and enough interesting people end up together somewhere else, and then all the users will leave at once (in internet time).

Doctorow huffs his own farts at a James Cameron level, but he's right about this.

Sophistifunk··on Circles do not exist
Please note that most pistons and cylinder bores are also not circles ;-)
Sophistifunk··on Ask HN: Why did Visual Basic die?
I think GP is describing the period before the .net switch. I remember back in those days having to do web stuff on MS platforms, which meant classic ASP, which was great for the job it was designed for: gluing together ActiveX components.

Unfortunately, nobody anywhere ever trusted ActiveX because it (at least gave everybody the impression it) had holes the size of a bus, so you were stuck using a limited language with no library support to do all the glue and all the heavy lifting, it was a very unpleasant period of time if you found your way into a Microsoft shop.

Sophistifunk··on Wage transparency: Everyone’s happy except HR?
Because all government power is itself intrinsically a huge cost to society. We don't serve them, they serve us.
Sophistifunk··on Wage transparency: Everyone’s happy except HR?
You do realise that it's possible to believe both "the world would be better if everybody did X" and also believe that "the government should not have the power to mandate everybody does X"?
Sophistifunk··on Fake town built exclusively for filming TV and movies
I hear OSHA also frowns on being fired upon at work
Sophistifunk··on The Lucretius Problem: How History Blinds Us
The best data you have is the best data you have, no matter how incomplete it may be.
Sophistifunk··on TypeScript 5.2's new keyword: 'Using'
Yeah, I figured as much after taking the time to read the TC doc. Seems like sugar that doesn't really add much. I was excited when I first saw the headline.
Sophistifunk··on TypeScript 5.2's new keyword: 'Using'
How does this deal with escape analysis etc? I can't see how to implement this without vm changes or extreme code transforms which would be antithetical to the spirit of typescript.
Sophistifunk··on Show HN: Slint – A declarative UI toolkit for embedded and desktop
What's the catch? There's always a catch, like "turns out it's just WebView" or "turns out only the android and Linux CDE implementations actually exists" or "call us for pricing"
Sophistifunk··on Are you a late bloomer in work or love? Maybe you’re right on time
Aw cummon, I'm finally in a position where we could have kids without ruining all our lives with poverty.

Now we're in our mid 40s and it's far too late.

Sophistifunk··on Repairing Electronics: A circular economy solution
That's... quite the understatement :)
Sophistifunk··on Reddit Doubles Down
They're running out of cash, investors want their money back, and their answer it seems is to turn reddit into onlyfans, which requires they wrest-back control of all the NSFW parts of it.
Sophistifunk··on Forests around Chernobyl aren’t decaying properly (2014)
Pripyat seems like an excellent place to look for genes and organisms that will help us grow food (and recycle air) on the moon / mars.
Sophistifunk··on Math That Goes on Forever but Never Repeats
But it's not really one tile, if you have to use it and a mirror, is it? Also, the final image where the two tiles are shown with 4 colours makes it confusing trying to see which is which.
