SomeHacker44··on Samsung launches the first 500Hz OLED gaming monitor for $1,300
I always turn motion blur off. Why would I want something to show a blur instead of a crisp image?

Likewise I turn all other image quality reducing options off: depth of field, vignetting, chromatic aberration, bloom, etc.

SomeHacker44··on Ask HN: What books have been worth your time?
I enjoyed Peter F Hamilton's Exodus: The Archimedes Engine, which I expect is the first of a trilogy per his pattern. Not a short book!
SomeHacker44··on Math for Computer Science and Machine Learning [pdf]
And at 2,100 pages (seemingly letter sized) it may well be the longest free book I have seen on HN. Wow!
SomeHacker44··on Charted: The Decline of U.S. Software Developer Jobs
Decline of job LISTINGS. This seems to have nothing to do with jobs whatsoever.
SomeHacker44··on Contra Chrome: How Google's browser became a threat to privacy and democracy
I use FF as my main driver on Android (phone and tablet) without problems...???
SomeHacker44··on Differentiable Logic Cellular Automata
Reminds me of the old movie Andromeda Strain.
SomeHacker44··on Hedge Fund Created an Excel on Steroids
Shame. No pictures. No code excerpts. No examples.
SomeHacker44··on Dropbox Engineering Career Framework
As an entrepreneur, 25 year manager and now mid level IC employee of a big tech firm... Good for you. As a manager I always told people I would kill for a team of people mostly composed of folks happy with what they are doing. It is sooo hard to manage a team of people where most are striving for advancement, especially when that cannot come soon enough for them (and especially when they do not believe they are not there yet).

I am trying to be this way, as I do personally love the work, but I would like one and maybe two promotions for the improved earnings and additional autonomy it would provide.

SomeHacker44··on Nikon reveals a lens that captures wide and telephoto images simultaneously
I am guessing it is some sort of anamorphic lens that has the center portion telephoto and then smears out the wide angle around the edges of the sensor. So you need a translation algorithm to get back to a normal image.
SomeHacker44··on Are PC hardware companies driving technology into restricted closed ecosystems?
Microcenter's pre built PowerSpec PCs are great. They are all basically OTS components so easy to upgrade, yet get pre built convenience.
SomeHacker44··on Borgo Programming Language
Sounds interesting. Shame the entire linked site assumes you know Go and describes Borgo only in terms of deltas from Go. That essentially means I and anyone else unfamiliar with Go will learn nothing from the site and dismiss the language.

And the reason I know nothing about Go is I bounced off it so hard probably due to all the things Borgo fixed! So I am probably the target developer.

SomeHacker44··on DB48X: High Performance Scientific Calculator, Reinvented
Spectacular project by one gentleman. Been using it for a while now on my Swissmicros.
SomeHacker44··on Show HN: Kis.tools – A directory of tools that work
Maybe it is not working on mobile firefox, but the list is anemic at best and wrong frequently. How is SyncThing a text tool? And video tool? For the desktop?
SomeHacker44··on Apple Forces the Signing of Applications in macOS Sequoia 15.1
I am more and more glad I got off the Apple closed ecosystem in 2018. There is so much innovation and variety elsewhere - you can get exactly what you want and it will also be vastly more open for hacking.
SomeHacker44··on Jaywalking legalized in New York City
I have always used four Manhattan avenue blocks as a mile... As a life long born NYC'er. Not three.
SomeHacker44··on GLP-1 for Everything
In the sense that you need a constantly increasing amount to maintain the same results: yes.
SomeHacker44··on Syncthing Android App Discontinued
F-Droid is not allowed if you use Google Advanced Security on your account. :( You have to side-load.
SomeHacker44··on The richest people borrow against their stock (2021)
This is not true: "very low rate." My brokerage starts at 12+% which I would not call low. It never even reaches prime at millions of borrowing, and I do not have remotely enough to get much better a rate.
SomeHacker44··on Apple introduces iPad mini built for Apple Intelligence
I hate that ForeFlight does not run on Android. It is is keeping me from getting rid of my last overpriced, closed, proprietary Apple device. Not that Jeppesen (Boeing) has a good record on any of that either.
SomeHacker44··on AVX Bitwise ternary logic instruction busted
Agreed on initial interpretation. Terrible title!
SomeHacker44··on Why Is Light So Fast?
There is already a Part 2 out (read it yesterday) and a Part 3 planned.
SomeHacker44··on Show HN: Free Tools for Tabs, Chords, Lyrics Use 8 A100 GPUs
I think AI generated things are not subject to copyright and hence not subject to license. i am not a lawyer.
SomeHacker44··on Can We Hear Temperature? New Study Says Yes
I hear it in my coffee kettle every day. Boiling starts out as a high pitched fizzy sound. Then just before the kettle shuts off, it is a lower pitch, popping sound. I always assumed the bubbles get bigger as the water heats up causing lower pitch sounds when they pop.
SomeHacker44··on Pascal65: A compiler and IDE that runs natively on Commodore's 8-bit computers
I recall heavily using UCSD/Apple Pascal in the early 1980s. I am surprised that does not run on Commodore and this was needed. Of course, as a hobby project, awesome!!!
SomeHacker44··on Let's consign CAP to the cabinet of curiosities
Nice! A paper by Michael Fischer of Multiflow fame. I have one of their computers in my garage. Thanks!
SomeHacker44··on Don Knuth's MIP, 64 years later
Do you have a list of such "bulletproof" computers youd recommend for a rainy day project?
SomeHacker44··on New iPad Pro with M4 chip and Apple Pencil Pro
To be fair, the increasing lack of choice in both hardware and software/operating system is why I left the Apple ecosystem 5 years ago. I have no complaints now; tons of vendors and operating systems to choose from. Well, hardware vendors anyway.
SomeHacker44··on Why is Alt+F4 the hotkey for closing a window? Why not Alt+F5 or Alt+F3?
Yes. I regularly use F2 and F3. F1 help I cannot remember the last time I used it. I also get irritated by windows applications that do not use F3 for find next. I do not use F4 without a control or alt combo though...
SomeHacker44··on California could ban Clear, which lets travelers skip TSA lines
I get TSA Precheck for free since I have Global Entry (which does have a cost).
SomeHacker44··on Gitlab Duo
You can still read and learn from something patented. That is, after all, the whole point of a patent!

You can also read and learn from copyleft and use that learning elsewhere.

Remember, copyright does not apply to ideas. It applies to a specific individual instantiation. In theory.
