Shugarl··on Ask HN: What does it means to be more curious?
Fooling around with things helps, but that's not really different to the "Ask yourself more questions" kind of advices.

Even if I was fooling around with, say, a 3 modeling of a bed, why would I retain any information I didn't genuinely want to know ? Questioning my own understanding of things doesn't help either, as realizing that something doesn't work the way I thought it did, doesn't necessarily make me care about finding out what the truth is.

>I’m not sure I agree. Emotions are a form of personal confusion. Curiosity is intellectual. More tied to unemotional ignorance and lack of rigidity towards formal expectations

I didn't get that, mind expanding ?

Shugarl··on A gentler, better way to change minds
I disagree, you can win debates regardless of whether or not your views are correct. A good debater with a wrong view will "win" against a bad debater with a correct view.
Shugarl··on Never pay for online dating (2010)
I know that works to make friends, when you drunkenly, randomly start to talk to other people, or jump into conversations. But how does it work for meeting the opposite sex ? Being drunk for these kinds of things usually isn't good
Shugarl··on Why kids are afraid to ask for help
As an adult: it's 80% because I'm afraid of looking incompetent in front of my peers.

It can be pretty painful to see people systematically dismiss anything you say, or always seek out a second opinion, for no other reason that they have a hard time believing anything reliable can come out of your mouth.

I won't let that happen again.

Shugarl··on If You Want This Job, We Must Interview You Forever
The first time I looked for a job, it took about 11 months. 11 months of learning about companies that I'm not interested in just so that I can pretend to be excited to join them, pretending to be interested in the field they're in, of practicing leet code questions, of being asked to redo my resume in a specific way, of being asked to build web apps and do code challenges before being able to have a discussion with someone in their IT team, of showing up at interviews where a recruiter oversold my profile, and so on...
Shugarl··on The Four Dirty C-Words of the Internet
Because people who weren't in the loop used to be fairly confused/hostile to Streamers and YouTuber (That's not a real job, and all that). It also helps not being associated too closely with their peers ('Oh, so you're like that Jake Paul guy ?')
Shugarl··on Show HN: Pornpen.ai – AI-Generated Porn
I always thought that if something's bothering you, it's much easier to change yourself in order not to be bothered anymore than it is to change the world so that the thing bothering you doesn't exist.

It's easier to be careful with where and when I go somewhere than it is to create a world where I won't get mugged/assaulted. It's easier to be content with the life I live than it is to become rich. And so on...

Shugarl··on Scientists discover how mosquitoes can ‘sniff out’ humans
Good if it's useful to us humans, bad if it's harmful.
Shugarl··on The silence of risk management victory
>. Raytheon or Palantir employees, where the delta in morality is much greater, but convincing people to go from neutral-ish to good is harder than convincing them to go from bad to good.

Did palantir do shady things ? I now that the CEO got in trouble for looking down on poor people ( or something along those lines ?), but is there more ?

Shugarl··on Second-Order Thinking
Is it me, or does everyone here have a different definition of what n-th order thinking means ?
Shugarl··on Second-Order Thinking
Ooh, interesting. Up until now, I'd just imagine myself solving the problem manually, then describe that with code. I'll try to imagine building a machine to see how it feels
Shugarl··on Spain will introduce free train travel
The great majority won't. But a part will, which is likely to be a problem.
Shugarl··on The importance of stupidity in scientific research
But you need money to research stuff. And the ones who gives you money are expecting a return on their investment.
Shugarl··on Job interview questions engineers should ask, but don't
True, but I absolutely hate having to ask my network anything. I'd gladly help them, but I despise having to advertise what's going on in my life.
Shugarl··on Job interview questions engineers should ask, but don't
> At the end of the day, if you don't know these basic things about a company, why have you applied for a job there?

Because I need money, and you might be the 3XXth company I've applied to. Job hunting when there's something unappealing about yourself can be quite a pain, but rent is still due at the end of the month.

Shugarl··on People who are isolated from others do worse on cognitive tests: new research
> lack of interest in social relationships, a tendency toward a solitary or sheltered lifestyle, secretiveness, emotional coldness, detachment and apathy.

> Affected individuals may be unable to form intimate attachments to others and simultaneously possess a rich and elaborate but exclusively internal fantasy world.

> stilted speech

> a lack of deriving enjoyment from most activities.

> feeling as though one is an "observer" rather than a participant in life.

> an inability to tolerate emotional expectations of others,

> a degree of asexuality.

>idiosyncratic moral or political beliefs.

> Symptoms typically start in late childhood or adolescence.

Jesus, TIL I might have a Schizoid personality disorder.

Shugarl··on A picture of me
> I think it's important to realize that many people don't enjoy it either but just use it as a social grease to move into more deep conversation or connection.

I disagree. I'm like the author, but I do make sure to always listen when I'm with a group or if I'm around people. And either they're really good at hiding the deeper conversation, more interesting from me, or they just tend to smalltalk for the sake of smalltalk.

Shugarl··on A picture of me
> Most of the things- and I mean like 99.9%- that people do or talk about, I just have no interest in (or actively disagree with).

Are you me ? Though I found happiness in my isolation. It feels much better than having to fake my way through social interactions 24/7

Shugarl··on The collapsing quality of dev.to (2021)

Shugarl··on Show HN: Browser extension that spoofs your location data to match your VPN
Well Google Map still knows where I am when my VPN is activated. So I'd say yes, unless VPNs on mobile are less reliable than on PC
Shugarl··on Ask HN: How to talk with logical flow and coherence at interviews?
> I remember the acronym CAR - Context, Action, Result. I form my answers in this framework to make a plan for how to get to the reply

I was looking for something like that to organize my thoughts when I speak. Thanks!

Shugarl··on Teach your kids poker, not chess
I thought this discussion was about games you play against other people ? Pokemon battles against anyone who know basic strategies are hard as hell
Shugarl··on Book Review: Consciousness and the Brain
How does one think visually ? I've tried it, but I feel like I just think verbally first, and then try to imagine an image that represent what I just said in my head
Shugarl··on Limb lengthening surgery is becoming more popular
You'll never be the most attractive person in the world though. Even if your SO think you're attractive, there's a huge amount of people they'd be more attracted to, if they had the chance to meet them.
Shugarl··on Limb lengthening surgery is becoming more popular
In rural town, there's less competition.... But there's also less women.
Shugarl··on I earned $160k in passive income from writing non-fiction books
For _multiple_ books. A book he wrote 6 years ago can still earn him some money, without him touching it.

I disagree with the other comments. Ever since I read this book years ago, I've been able to start reading daily, exercise regularly, clean my home almost daily, work on learning a new language daily (Japanese) among other things.
Shugarl··on Reading academic computer science papers
Total compensation.

It really annoyed me to not know what it meant, so I spend a bit of time finding that
