ShteiLoups··on I Miss the Old Internet
What's the difference between blogs and hobbyist sites though?

A defined purpose? monitization?

I suppose it would be a hard fight to get google to specifically favour non-adsensed sites.

ShteiLoups··on 'Zen curtain' saves birds from hitting glass windows
I wonder if the same tactics can be applied for apple developers...
ShteiLoups··on My Favourite Git Commit
After a few days practicing this, it becomes second nature, and doesn't hold you up at all. Commit histories also become much quicker to parse through, especially with "log --oneline".

I notice no hindrance on my speed because I write good commit messages, and always value them when I one back to them.

ShteiLoups··on My Favourite Git Commit
Well that's the argument about immediate productivity and good documentation.
ShteiLoups··on A study finds that bosses can be useful but also sneaky
I think I'd strike a difference between power and influence.

Managers necessarily have influence, or quickly grow it, by the nature of being a good manager.

ShteiLoups··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
You're on a ycombinator website. They might be a good place to start.
ShteiLoups··on A study finds that bosses can be useful but also sneaky
Well that's just what a manager should be doing. Their job is to ensure everyone else can work. Quite literally a "production assistant". They should deal with all the BS that workers don't want to, so they can get to the real work. Which is the main flaw in promoting workers to management, as they're two entirely different sets of skills.

There's a post on joelonsoftware about this, and I think it constitutes most of the first few chapters of the book peopleware.

ShteiLoups··on Google clamps down on free storage
So long as they don't continue to sell my data while also taking my money, peace.
ShteiLoups··on My Favourite Git Commit
Yeah, first line, w/e
ShteiLoups··on Alphabet’s Wing begins making commercial drone deliveries in the US
If we don't want it happening, we should make it illegal, simple as that.
ShteiLoups··on My Favourite Git Commit
Yes. As is convention, commit messages should be a one line header, then and empty line an a body (if necessary).

The whole thing should be width limited to 80 or 100 characters.

And the subject line should complete the sentence "If this commit is applied, it will...". It should start with a capital letter, then move to lowercase, and necessarily will start with a verb.

ShteiLoups··on New rules for contractors have unexpected consequences for strip clubs
And if they can't get away with it, I suppose they'll have to raise wages to attract entertainers.

Oh look, a free market!

ShteiLoups··on 99% of the Git commands you'll need at work, demonstrated in a single script
I used to live and die by the command line.

Then I met sublime-merge. And fell in love. It is the only Gui I find more efficient and beautiful than my terminal. I highly reccomend it.

ShteiLoups··on We’re Entering the Era of Big Podcasting
You're right. It's the perfect form of media in terms of consumption addiction. It's completely opt in, and easily opted out of.

I wonder what we can learn from that.

ShteiLoups··on The Inuit agree on a common writing system
The mechanicalkeyboards subreddit is very active, and full of both artisans and information.
ShteiLoups··on Apple Hides Taiwan Flag in Hong Kong
This is more blatantly political.

Do you have anything more I can read about the Isrealy/USA map censorship?

ShteiLoups··on Learning Vim incrementally (2010)
You could install WSL and have native VIM in bash in a distro, with the normal Linux package management solution.
ShteiLoups··on How to buy clothes that are built to last
I can't agree more concerning the move towards 'slim' bodies.

I can't fit into the majority of popular jeans brands for the lowly crime of playing hockey as a youth, and now having larger than average legs and glutes.

ShteiLoups··on Fingerprints could be stolen from V sign selfies (2017)
Good explanation of a good implementation. Thanks for bringing my attention to something that's been right in front of me for years but I didn't know about.
ShteiLoups··on I quit social media and now I want a cigarette
You could move yourselves to email lists.

My non-tech parents still organize their meetups over email, it works more than fine for them.

ShteiLoups··on Fairphone 3 Teardown
I come across tools, frameworks, plugins, etc. all the time that are no longer being supported by their devs
ShteiLoups··on GoCardless launches US debit payments solution
Funny that "the US is the Mecca of credit cards" but touch-less payment is still so rare.
ShteiLoups··on Too Many Video Streaming Choices May Drive Users Back To Piracy
Woah, free markets balancing themselves...

Crazy

So you want indefinite software support?

Technically achievable with open source, but even OSS projects come to an end.

ShteiLoups··on Japanese Settlement Found in Forests of British Columbia
For those who'd like some context, I'll reccomend the YouTuber John Zahorian, and his "Great Divide Trail" hike. Gives some sense of the wildness of a small portion of the country.
ShteiLoups··on HK protesters use “unblockable” messaging via a bluetooth mesh
I wonder if it's feasible for cities to implement infrastructure to help during times of large gatherings.

During the NBA championship parade this summer every cell network in Toronto was basically shut down, even with extra capacity along the parade route. If there had also been the bandwidth of a series of 'permenent' Bluetooth nodes, I wonder how that would effect things.

ShteiLoups··on From FOMO to JOMO: the joy of missing out
Sorry bud, you've missed the point on that one.

You should check out what docker and kubernetes actually are if you'd like to discuss them. Kubernetes is a management engine that controls docker containers, replacing the docker developed solution.
