ShrimpHawk··on Palisades Fire suspect's ChatGPT history to be used as evidence
> The reason I want maximum punishment is that it works, it does deter

People disagree with you not of opinion but because you are factually wrong.

"Evidence shows lengthy prison terms do not have a significant deterrent effect on crime" https://ccla.org/criminal-justice/no-longer-prison-sentences...

ShrimpHawk··on Show HN: Modeling the human body in Rust so I can cmd+click through it
The entire project is AI coded. Thought of this level was not put into developing it.
ShrimpHawk··on Flock's gunshot detection microphones will start listening for human voices
Paying an entire class of people to not have children is eugenics. There is a massive line between that and increasing (free) access to reproductive services.
ShrimpHawk··on Scammed out of $130K via fake Google call, spoofed Google email and auth sync
One wrong point in this. Google Authenticator does not cloud sync by default. You specifically have to accept the cloud sync option that you are prompted with.

Billy Mitchell wins more in court than video games. Maybe he should have picked a different career growing up.
ShrimpHawk··on Apple needs a Snow Sequoia
1Password is also now subscription only and online only. Gone are the days of a forever license and fully offline encrypted database allowing for 3rd party syncing via iCloud or others. The death of their old app went hand in hand with their race to the bottom subscription payment VC backed ecosystem. It's only time until they suffer a breach like everyone else.

ShrimpHawk··on OpenAI didn’t copy Scarlett Johansson’s voice for ChatGPT, records show
It's in the very article > He compared Johansson’s case to one brought by the singer Bette Midler against the Ford Motor Company in the 1980s. Ford asked Midler to use her voice in ads. After she declined, Ford hired an impersonator. The U.S. appellate courts ruled in Midler’s favor, indicating her voice was protected against unauthorized use.

ShrimpHawk··on Why TSA's Implementation of Facial Recognition Is More Dangerous Than You Think
Some state governments already perform facial recognition when issuing drivers licenses. There have been stories of twins being unable to obtain an ID because it was flagged as fraud due to matching facial features.
ShrimpHawk··on Shell employees urge CEO to rethink shift from renewables in rare letter
If there were a company that turned literal murder into stock prices people would invest in it.
ShrimpHawk··on EU tells Apple to open everything up to its rivals
RCS is a half baked implementation from google; the company that has killed every single chat app they've released. It's a spec that relies on carrier implementation of any feature and if actually implemented by a majority would immediately go the way of SMS and people would cry for a new better spec in a few years. We have seen all of this before and the push for RCS from google is propaganda because iMessage is effective for iOS lock-in and Apple sales. Users have the freedom to install any third party chat app and use that if they don't like iMessage.

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/08/a-decade-and-a-half-...

> Even if you could snap your fingers and magically roll out RCS to every device, you wouldn't actually create a competitive messaging solution. Being a standard created in 2008 means RCS has standards from 2008, and it's lacking things you would want from a modern messaging service, like end-to-end encryption. The Google Messenger strategy strangely insists on using RCS as the base protocol, but the service also keeps trying to build features on top of it that kick in when both users are on Google Messages.

ShrimpHawk··on Yes, Android 14 still allows modification of system certificates
iOS is even easier than Android to add system certificates and can be done without rooting or jailbreaking the device unlike android. cert pinning is done by the apps not the system.
ShrimpHawk··on Mister Rogers had a point – routinely greeting six neighbors maximizes wellbeing
Where does anyone live that they even see their neighbors to greet? Not here in the suburbs.
ShrimpHawk··on Douglass Mackey found guilty of election interference
The logic that I can follow is you cannot vote twice; by believing that you can vote by text and follow through with that action you have been "deprived" of your right to vote.

> “What Mackey allegedly did to interfere with this process – by soliciting voters to cast their ballots via text – amounted to nothing short of vote theft."

> Mackey conspired with others to use social media platforms, including Twitter, to disseminate fraudulent messages designed to encourage supporters of one of the presidential candidates (the “Candidate”) to “vote” via text message or social media, a legally invalid method of voting

ShrimpHawk··on TikTok: Is this a national security scare or is something else going on?
Even if relevant anything recommended by Elon is an instant pass
ShrimpHawk··on FBI chief says TikTok 'screams' of US national security concerns
The core issue is their use of data, if you enact laws to curb that behavior then that covers not only tiktok but the "thousands of shity games/apps owned partially by tencent". If they continue to break the rules then you ban them and any other that is not complying; including domestically owned companies like facebook that harvest your data and use it to influence elections undemocratically.

ShrimpHawk··on Valve bans 40k Dota 2 accounts using honeypot patch
AI has actually been working against cheaters. Using server side measurements fed into an AI like OSRS does has drastically cut down on the number of cheaters. Mass amounts of data can be collected of users mouse movements that when fed in can detect cheaters using aim botting in FPS. Valve actually does some of this already as well to reduce the number of blatent cheating overwatch candidates in CS:GO.
ShrimpHawk··on Amazon employees express dismay, anger about sudden return-to-office policy
The study[1] was based on starting from 100% Office randomizing the amount of days people worked from home and was measured by email quantity, quality, and manager performance reviews. A better wording would be "employees send more and better emails when working from home 60-77% of the time". To fully understand the problem you need to study going from WFH to RTO and productivity. Multiple studies have shown the benefits of 100% WFH[2]. Hybrid and RTO is being pushed primarily by management not employees.

ShrimpHawk··on Replacing my MacBook Air M1 with a ThinkPad T480
I agree; used a 2015 Macbook Pro until last year when I purchased the M1. 7 years of life for a laptop is exceptional and I expect to get similar out of my current one. You'd be hard pressed to find laptops with that level of longevity.
ShrimpHawk··on Facebook Announces Meta Verified
>That said, why offer 2 different payments for web and mobile?

Mobile (Google Play, Apple App Store) takes a cut from transactions made through them. Companies don't want to lose money. Companies have been doing this for as long they could. It is not anything new.

ShrimpHawk··on New online superstore surpasses Amazon and Walmart to become most downloaded app
> In the fourth quarter of last year, US app installations for Temu exceeded those for Amazon (AMZN), Walmart (WMT) and Target (TGT), according to Abe Yousef, a senior insights analyst at the analytics firm Sensor Tower.

Title should read "New online superstore surpasses Amazon and Walmart to become most downloaded app in the past quarter". This is just more drop shipping garbage.

ShrimpHawk··on Connecticut parents arrested for letting kids walk to Dunkin' Donuts
The police (executive branch) are the ones who decide what and how to enforce as evidence by the fact they dropped the charges. We live in a very vague world and have to use our own judgement on things as laws cannot contain the full context necessary to make those judgements. Do you truly expect an elected official from a city across the state or across the country to understand the relationship between you and your neighbors or the structure of your town? If there is truly so much crime that it is unsafe for children to walk to a store unsupervised than that points more at a failing of the police but we know that police do not prevent crime[1].
