SheddingPattern··on Is finding gaps just hard now? As a 24 yo, everything seems to be done already
Get a job at IBM/Deloitte or P&G and you'll see no end of things still left to do
SheddingPattern··on Tesla Q1 2024 Update [pdf]
Mercedes is ahead of Tesla in self driving. Sae 3 vs 2
SheddingPattern··on Ask HN: Success stories from McKinsey (et al.)
Thank you!

Any writer or communities in this space that I could engage with to find out more?

Is the best way to just join a sales team?

SheddingPattern··on Ask HN: Success stories from McKinsey (et al.)
What does speaking with impact entail?
SheddingPattern··on Is the "modern data stack" still a useful idea?
More of a thing, but it's mostly DevOps.
SheddingPattern··on What it was like working for Gitlab
Because sometimes all they're after is for slideware on GenAI. The people they fired encapsulated a spirit of innovation that doesn't fit the operating model and therefore is of no value to them.
SheddingPattern··on Ask HN: How did you sense you were on the chopping block?
Is there anything that signals this person is high-value?

Are there any roles or departments, relevant to this audience, that are particularly safe?

I imagine you cut mostly from loss-centres as with profit centres you can tell who is making and who isn't, right?

Who hires and who do you present your recommendations to, what are their decision criteria?

Very generous of you to do this. I really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Grammar and manners

SheddingPattern··on SeaweedFS fast distributed storage system for blobs, objects, files and datalake
Sounds like you are talking from experience. Are you storage specialist, how did you learn so much about this?

SheddingPattern··on Credit Suisse sheds nearly 25%, key backer says no more money
Credit Suisse is a top 50 bank while SVB doesnt even make the top 100. SVB dissapearing leads to a lack of choice. Credit Suisse may pose a genuine global systemic risk.
SheddingPattern··on B2B startups stop innovating the day you give power to product managers
Ironic that the author calls PMs "not very smart at making product decisions" while the author is not smart enough to understand the role of sales or product.

Also, innovation is not an end in itself. The question is do, PMs add value?

The author is right that the founder is the best product manager and should only handover to a dedicated PM once the business is ready to scale.

SheddingPattern··on Writing an engineering strategy
No, but you misunderstood the audience for an engineering strategy, namely other c-level execs.

User 'jschveibinz' describes it well.

SheddingPattern··on Sam Bankman-Fried and the geometry of conscience
Comparing what happened to FTX to a tiny leak in a gas tank due to a money saving measure by von Braun to balance the budget of the Apollo 11 mission, which results in a catastrophic failure and erroneously puts in question the ambition and mission to visit the moon and quantitative methods employed, is completely asinine.

This underplays what happened. FTX implosion appears to be due to fraud, lack of controls within the organisation and puts in question the judgement of the EA community, VCs, auditors, media.

The lessons to draw are not technical in nature. To continue the author's analogy: Wehrner von Brau as an individuap, construction and inspection procedures, or security culture at Nasa. They are instead fundamental. And would put in question all of NASA, the ecosystem (universities, suppliers), funders like the Congress and the president , and any oversight agencies.

If the what we've learnt so far is confirmed, then a Sequoia investment and its due diligence failed, trust in the EA community is undermined as it is not particularly ethical or rational.

SheddingPattern··on The $300B Google-Meta advertising duopoly is under attack
When you research a new product, on what platform is it the review hosted and do the reviewers make a living out of reviews? I believe that that the line between advertising and reviews are increasingly blurred
SheddingPattern··on Managerial Aesthetics, or Documenta Fifteen
The perception is that this is a large part of what constitutes the art market.
SheddingPattern··on Managerial Aesthetics, or Documenta Fifteen
Interesting but i wish there was more depth to it. From the article: >there remains a vital commercial subsphere in the artworld The above is offered in opposition to the para-academic side of the art world. However, that sentence does a lot of heavy lifting. There are well known issues with money laundering in the art world, tax evasion, speculation etc... Given that the commercial side of art may notbe a proper market, i am not sure that it is vital in the sense of bringing vitality to the art world.
SheddingPattern··on Remaining Ambitious
Sometimes there are three decent ca candidates but only one role, so yeah "you were great"
SheddingPattern··on Artificial neural networks are making strides towards consciousness?
Exactly. Is this story anything other than marketing? Something to keep interest in their flagship product.
SheddingPattern··on Ask HN: What has to change? I'm sick of it
Thinking of a recruiter as a teacher doesn't seem accurate to me. They should not be expected to understand the company well or the role of the software team in the company. Recruiters are intermediaries whose role it is to save the hiring manager's valuable time. They will focus on the initial scanning of profiles (does this vaguely look like a developer profile?), be responsible for scheduling and maybe salary negotiations as this means you can start a fresh relationship with your hiring manager without the potential tension left over from a salary negotiation. The exception are executive search professionals who will understand the business model well, but even they would not be able to recommend a book.
SheddingPattern··on Zoom is worth less today than before the pandemic
Teams is more widely used than Zoom in my view. Significantly more.
SheddingPattern··on Overthinking can be our superpower if we use it well
Overthinking by definition is thinking too much. What he describes is just thinking
SheddingPattern··on Poll: How are you doing currently?
It's the lack of conviction that will lead to burnout.
SheddingPattern··on Show HN: A Reddit style site to discuss podcast episodes
Would it be interesting to do this for all knowledge artefacts? Books, articles, blog posts, blogs. It would create a graph of all these works after all they/respond to each other but also who reads what.
SheddingPattern··on Ask HN: Startup Jobs as a Solution Architect
I've seen architecture roles in startups that focus on legacy industries, like public sector or banking. Consider adjacent roles like engineering manager or technical program manager if you have delivery experience. Another opportunity is a senior position in a startup's professional services arm, similar to forward deployed engineer but may have titles like implementation engineer, customer success engineer eer, or solution architect.
SheddingPattern··on Ask HN: Senior FAANG engineer, going back to school for PhD. Is it a bad idea?
That proves the point he was only mid-twenties so still young
SheddingPattern··on Facebook crisis grows as new whistleblower and leaked documents emerge
No
SheddingPattern··on Even with 49% up sales and a 46% drop in expenses Slack still cant turn a profit
Slack is a though sell for a enterprise organisation with a large suite of Microsoft tools. Of course Slack is better than Teams the person making the decision doesn't care. Also Teams is good enough.
SheddingPattern··on Seventeen Reasons Not to Be a Manager
This is a very idiosyncratic list. While they point out that the list focuses on intrinsic reasons, they seem the author's reason's not to be a manager but dont "generalise". For example, not having the opportunity to job hop, or you can do all the fun tasks an Individual Contributor. The first one may be true, but that in and of itself is only a tool to manage a career progression and pay. The second one is only true if you consider management to be only that which overlaps with a Sr individual contributor might do: mentoring, decision making. There is more on the management path. The type of manager a sr developer transitions into is really only the beginning of a career path - and the article is written from that perspective.
