Shalomboy··on Benn Jordan’s flock camera jammer will send you to jail in Florida now [video]
That's a non-starter if you want to maintain any sort of upward mobility in Florida.
Shalomboy··on Benn Jordan’s flock camera jammer will send you to jail in Florida now [video]
Austin is alluring, but I can't seem to get my foot in the door at any of the big chipmakers in town. Not to be snarky, but I already have enough problems with power outages during hurricane season - ERCOT doesn't inspire much more confidence.
Shalomboy··on Benn Jordan’s flock camera jammer will send you to jail in Florida now [video]
I would very much like to leave the "free state of Florida". All of the benefits of living here that I grew up knowing by heart no longer exist and the state government's only concern seems to be punishing people for wrongthink. It isn't cheap to lease or buy property anywhere near a metro area, the coral reefs and sponge beds have mostly disappeared, the beautiful wildlife in our state parks has been curtailed by constant wildfires, and the schools have atrophied to a shell of their former selves. What's the point of living here anymore, or raising my kids here?
Shalomboy··on Nano Banana Pro
The SynthID check for fishy photos is a step in the right direction, but without tighter integration into everyday tooling its not going to move the needle much. Like when I hold the power button on my Pixel 9, It would be great if it could identify synthetic images on the screen before I think to ask about it. For what its worth it would be great if the power button shortcut on Pixel did a lot more things.
Shalomboy··on How To Build A Smartwatch: Software
Having owned and worn Pebble watches for the lifetime of the original company and then some, I think you would be _stunned_ at how many little things Pebble got right that others didn't. Personally, nothing has come close to these devices since the release of the Pebble Time.
Shalomboy··on Websites hosting major US climate reports taken down
It just occurred to me that SEAMAP will be* gone, and I didn't notice because the people looking ahead at these sorts of things while I kept my head down and worked were all fired. I will need a new job.

* I say will be, because it was already cut down to size last spring.

Shalomboy··on The $25k car is going extinct?
I mean that's just not the reality anymore. You could perhaps get 10-15% of the price knocked off here in the US, but 20-40% isn't accurate for anything besides high-volume luxury compact sedans, and even then you're skewing much closer to 20-25% in most regions.
Shalomboy··on Getting Started Strudel
Love this for you, but I think we have to be more careful. People want to make music with instruments, orthodox or otherwise. The optics are crazy here.
Shalomboy··on Firefox OS's story from a Mozilla insider not working on the project (2024)
> The problem with targeting high end first is sales / production risk. A phone based on a new OS is a risky purchase, and it's hard to convince someone to spend $500 on a high end phone without much software available. A $100 low end phone without much software available is an easier sale.

I mean, skate to where the puck is going, right? It sounds like Firefox OS started development as mobile component prices started to fall in price dramatically. By the time B2G was ready to go to market, the baseline for hardware would be dramatically higher than when they started.

Shalomboy··on Kelp – simple replacement for homebrew on macOS
I already switched from zsh to fish; kelp would bring unbelievable synergy to my terminal
Shalomboy··on How to Build a Smartwatch: Picking a Chip
Love this write-up. nimBLE is a great bluetooth stack; this should open up some interesting opportunities for Core Devices moving forward.
Shalomboy··on Firebase Studio
Your output is prodigious! Absolutely blown away by how much you've been able to write over the years
Shalomboy··on What Is It Like to Be a Bass? Fish-Eye View Photography (1919–22)
This is delightful. The photo "fingers in water as seen from below" is such a trip.
Shalomboy··on Diatom Arrangements
This is stunning work you've put forwards. Diatoms remind me of looking at snowflakes, but so much more alien feeling. The ocean is such a mysterious place.
Shalomboy··on DB Browser for SQLite (Windows, macOS, and Most Versions of Linux)
This application single-handedly underpins the entire competitive/online yugioh space. Thank you for your excellent work!
Shalomboy··on Contra Wirecutter on the IKEA air purifier
Hey, maybe the showman ship isn't for you, but what Linus and his Media Group have done is create the Top Gear of Enthusiast computer hardware. Tremendous entertainment value, exposure for niche sects of the culture, and an easy entry into the space for newcomers and young folks. That's gotta be good for something.
Shalomboy··on Apple Unveils M2
That's so funny, because I'm in the same boat with my XPS 9570. I bought it for personal use because I had an amazing experience with a 9370 developer edition at my last job. I figured it would be the same, but that was extremely naive. I got the i5-8300H SKU with an empty 2.5" SSD bay, 53Wh battery, and a 1TB drive for $800 and change with the intention of plugging it into my GTX 1070 eGPU at home. I figured that this would be like, a power-sipping config.

NOPE! It wakes itself from lid-shut sleep and cooks itself whenever I put it in a bag, it will crash and reboot if the Thunderbolt cable gets jostled, and I get maybe 90 minutes on battery life after weeks of optimization script fiddling. I wanted to like it so badly because at the time, the processor was a steal. Matching the old 7820-HQ's performance with a bottom-tier i5 8300H felt like magic, but nothing else lived up to the hype.

Shalomboy··on Largest airship built in United States since 1930s to take shape soon
So it's a lot to get into, but these fellas put together a wonderful break-down of why blimps are worth trying again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chlF5oubFHU
Shalomboy··on Why is front-end development so unstable? (2018)
I would be thrilled to work someplace that uses neo4j. Such a good graph dbms. Too many folks believe the only way to organize data is with relational tables.
Shalomboy··on Logitech MX Mechanical Keyboard
Glad to hear the r/mk opinion on this. I've been a diehard for Logitech multi-device peripherals since I picked up a Triathlon mouse on sale in 2018 and I just got myself an MX Mini keyboard. For folks who frequently switch between devices it's a godsend. I was glad to see it in mechanical form, but I can't understand why they wouldn't do their due diligence on mechanical keyboard users and their needs.
Shalomboy··on U.S. Is Set to Launch a $6B Effort to Save Nuclear Plants
This sounds like a W for the carbon-zero initiative. While renewables are picking up a lot of the media attention and a lot of the slack, having safe nuclear plants to bolster the clean grid helps a ton. The whole issue of power plants not making enough money because coal and natural gas are cheaper to burn breaks my brain. It's like when gas was near $2.00 a gallon years after the mid-2000's gas price crunch and all the sudden everybody wanted a gigantic SUV or truck again. You know what happens when the gas prices go up! You were there! What are you doing???
Shalomboy··on Ask HN: CNN+ Software Engineers
It's only been out for 1 month though; that isn't enough time to generate intrigue. Look at how long Apple TV+ has taken to get up and running with good original content.
Shalomboy··on StarBook 14-inch
> There are some unstated "if"s in that, so I would say until people actually receive units, it doesn't quite exist.

Kudos for being wary of marketing copy. I'd like to note that StarLabs has been shipping laptops of their own design for a few years now. They've been super transparent about manufacturing lead times and their order queue too. I don't own anything of theirs yet, but I've been keeping an eye on them long enough to say I appreciate their way of doing business.

Shalomboy··on Git security vulnerability announced
Hey, don't chalk it up to IQ. I've met plenty of people in government software dev who work hard trying to make a dent in their career because they came from backgrounds which private sector operations ignore.

The person you're talking about totally exists, but they run the department.

Shalomboy··on Git security vulnerability announced
There's something super jarring about the format of this blog post. I think my brain has been trained to glaze over whenever it runs into corporate abstract art at the top of a page.
Shalomboy··on Ask HN: Share your personal site
honestly not hugely proud of the front fascia, but the utility of having 'unlimited storage' and subdomains through dreamhost has been a boon. https://cliff.fish If you need somebody to talk to my email is always open.

Shalomboy··on The takeover of America's legal system
The leap from 'junior associate at a fancy law firm made a bold request based on principles' to 'the American legal system is under attack by whiny, ultra-liberal wreckers' blew me away. But as you pointed out, that's not the point of the article. The author's purpose is to whine about right-wing windmills for 5,000 word.

I can't believe we take these people seriously.

Shalomboy··on .NET Myths Dispelled
> The .NET frameworks (blazor, etc) are too complicated. Peak FizzBuzzEnterpriseEdition there.

I dunno, Blazor feels like the one ASP framework that makes sense. MVC, Web Apps, Web Forms all feel impenetrable to me.
