Shaanie··on The New York hotel destination fee scam (2020)
Does first class mean something different to you? A first class ticket is ridiculously expensive and all airlines don't even offer them. A business class ticket is absolutely going to have meals included, and won't require robbing a bank.
Shaanie··on Will boiling water ruin green tea?
On the contrary Fahrenheit and Celsius is one of the harder units to convert. Can't just "halve and remove 10%" in your head like you can for pounds. Though I agree with you that you can't expect Americans to use SI units.
Shaanie··on Spotify abandons Heardle less than a year after buying it
People who like stuff typically aren't going around posting about it, especially not in these types of threads that appeal to those who dislike the company/app.

Personally I think Spotify is great and it works really well for me, the only thing I really don't like is the podcast push. While it's not as bad as it used to be, I wish I could toggle it off or banish it to some separate part of the app.

Shaanie··on I worked at Google for -10 days
Three months is fairly common in Sweden, and longer than that isn't all that rare (often depends on how long you've worked at the company).
Shaanie··on Levels of banned CFCs rising
The alternative is that we do nothing until it's too late, and then the consequences will be much worse. Don't worry though, society is terrible at preventive action, so I'm pretty confident we're going for the reactive action once it's too late.
Shaanie··on What broke Sweden? Real estate bust exposes big divide
It's impossible to average 5% return risk-free (if mortgage interest is 2% or whatever). Saying "as long as your average return is higher than your mortgage interest then it's lower risk" is a ridiculous statement, the entire reason you're getting a better return is because you're taking on more risk.
Shaanie··on The AI hype bubble is the new crypto hype bubble
It's awful compared to a professional author, absolutely, but it's still an actual story without big grammatical issues written by an AI from a short prompt. To me that's pretty magical, and the question is how much and how fast it will improve.

I do think people overestimate how fast it will improve (last 20% requiring 80% of the effort etc) and that we won't see chatGPT replacing real authors anytime soon though.

Shaanie··on Banning words won’t make the world more just
The reason we have women's sports in the first place is essentially a different form of "you have to be below 2m" in order to promote diversity in sports, so disallowing trans people doesn't seem like a much bigger step than disallowing 50% of the population.

Personally I don't have a strong opinion on this, especially since trans women taking over women's sports is not a problem yet anyway.

Shaanie··on AI won’t make artists redundant – thanks to information theory
One big difference is that art is typically a passion job, whereas most of the previously automated jobs weren't. Being able to draw for a living also takes way longer to learn than being a bank teller, or data entry etc, did.

Not that it matters, AI is only going to get better from here. I'd also feel depressed if I made my living doing digital art.

Shaanie··on Amazon will require employees return to the office 3 days a week
The "I can just roll over, interrupt them and get my chat done" is a pretty funny thing to bring up as a positive. I guess for non-developer roles that actually is a positive, but eh.
Shaanie··on How Spotify's podcast bet went wrong
It does have silence trimming now at least, not sure about the other stuff.
Shaanie··on Reversing UK mobile rail tickets
Sure, but presumably because it's not worth the effort to verify rather than an inability to do so, no?

If their priorities change, claiming your phone is out of battery seems unlikely to allow you to avoid a fine.

Shaanie··on W3C re-launched as a public-interest non-profit organization
Then pay $9.99 for Netflix Basic or $6.99 and deal with ads. If you can't afford that then there's basically no price point that makes sense because you're simply not willing or able to pay for entertainment.
Shaanie··on Intel's 'historic collapse' erases $8B from market value
Ah yes, the historic collapse bringing the stock back all the way to the 5th of January. This year.

A 6-8% drop is really nothing to write (or share) articles about in my opinion.

Shaanie··on Netflix has created a self-fulfilling cancelation loop with its new shows
If you haven't read the source material it's a fine show. Yes, just like all other shows nowadays diversity is the most important feature, but once you look past that it's not bad. Certainly better than rings of power in my opinion.
Shaanie··on I worked at LastPass as an engineer
I could see password reuse being used as a reason for trying brute force/dictionary attacks. E.g. You see that a user has used the same password on Coinbase as X, which could indicate that the user isn't using randomly generated passwords and therefore be potentially vulnerable to such attacks.

Kind of a long shot though.

Shaanie··on Tell HN: Uber has blocked my account for years, won't tell me why
A credit card chargeback should be used as the last resort, and for good reason: many service providers will permanently suspend your account if you do one.

There's typically a thread or two per year where some poor sap gets double charged by Google or similar company, uses a chargeback and then gets their entire account suspended. Poof, all your mails are now permanently gone.

So yeah, only do it if you're OK with never using Uber again.

Shaanie··on Issue dialing 911 on Google Pixel 6 cell phones
Because for many (probably the vast majority) it's not true. Their smartphone is first and foremost a portable computer. The ability to make calls is secondary.
Shaanie··on How to sell tickets fairly
Those three drawbacks are barely drawbacks at all nowadays. Not being able to return/resell your ticket is a big issue though.
Shaanie··on I tried starting a manufacturing unit in India (2020)
The way you word it makes it sound like "the corruption in developing countries is low-level, whereas in developed countries it's high-level". In reality, the corruption in developing countries is on all levels, whereas it's mostly only happening at a higher level in developing countries.
Shaanie··on AI will replace middle management before robots replace hourly workers
The owner(s) would be the one(s) replacing upper management with an AI.
Shaanie··on Study links omega-3s to improved brain structure, cognition at midlife
You'll have to be more precise about what kind of seafood. Afaik eating larger fish is thought to overall be a negative for you due to heavy metal accumulation.
Shaanie··on Inflation is at a 40 year high. What can history teach us?
It's not like accreditation exists to ensure poor people stay poor, framing it like that is disingenuous. Small-time investors are unlikely to be able to even semi-accurately estimate the value of a company, so they're much much more likely to be tricked into overpaying.
Shaanie··on The PS5 Has Been Jailbroken
Lots of hobbies are essentially "useless". The focus on being constantly "productive" seems toxic to me.

If you enjoy a hobby then it's not useless, enjoying it is the point of a hobby! So enjoy playing video games, growing houseplants, playing golf or whatever hobbies you have without feeling guilty about not producing as much as you could.

Shaanie··on 'Big Short' investor says white-collar jobs bubble is 'bursting'
Not sure about US law, but in my country it's fairly similar. The physical copy of the receipt must be kept for 7 years, but "only" for 3 years if you make a digital copy of it. It's quite a hassle if you WFH and expense things, since now you need to bring the physical receipts to the office.
Shaanie··on Want cleaner code? Use the rule of six
One-line functions are also nice when a comment would've been warranted otherwise. But yes, easy to go overboard with it.
Shaanie··on Argentina's currency exchange black markets
Most of the time when people talk about western countries/civilization, they're not talking about Latin America, but rather about USA+western Europe, at least in my experience. Geographically it makes sense, and linguistically too. But culturally (debatable), alliances and wealth-wise not as much.
Shaanie··on Covid: Summary of lab-origin hypothesis
Such a controversial statement requires sources. A quick Google seems to disagree (https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/united-states-rates-of-co...), although I don't have the energy to dig into it more than that since I hardly have the burden of proof.
Shaanie··on The Merge
It's shady because you're cherry picking the dates. Why not say 99.98% uptime since launch from the start?
Shaanie··on Serving Netflix Video Traffic at 800Gb/s and Beyond [pdf]
I'm surprised you think Netflix's UI and UX is that poor. Which streaming service do you think does a better job?
