SenHeng··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
> 400-500 miles a day.

I don't think my car even has a large enough petrol tank for that. You Americans drive way too much.

SenHeng··on What makes software development engineering
So instance of SWE1 we become SWD1. I don't see the difference.
SenHeng··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
I had that moment while puking up my nth beer, wtf was I paying all that money for this?!
SenHeng··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
But it happened still.
SenHeng··on SpaceX Pivots Away from Space
> In February, Musk announced that the company had shifted its focus from Mars to the much closer lunar surface, which also happens to be a more useful place to manufacture orbital data centres.

> Last week it emerged that SpaceX has stopped bidding for commercial Falcon 9 launches, allowing only US government customers for the rocket. And Gwynne Shotwell signalled last week in Paris that Crew Dragon, the only operational crew vehicle for routine missions for Nasa, will eventually be wound down.

SenHeng··on Don't couple your Go code to GitHub
GitHub is almost forever. Your custom domain disappears when you stop paying the bills, which if you’re an open source developer has a higher likelihood than GitHub disappearing.

One day, we’re all going back to vendoring dependencies.

SenHeng··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
While Takaichi is responsible for the lack of tact in that situation, I personally blame the opposition politician that raised the question hoping to score some cheap political points when the end result couldn’t have been more obvious.
SenHeng··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
The right wing commentariat has heavily focused on foreigners buying up all the condos in Tokyo in the past several years, believing it to be the cause of the current property bubbles and cascading rise of living costs.

Last month, the government announced the results of a flawed[0] but informative survey of condo buyers. Turns out, barely 3% of condos were sold to foreigners.

Th right wing commentariat howled and didn’t believe the results, coming up with all sorts of conspiracy theories, they’re using a Japanese proxy, they’re buying through naturalised citizens, etc.

I wish I could find the article, it’s on Yahoo news and the comments are … enlightening.

0: flawed, because they ran a simple regex on owners’ names, those with non-Japanese names = foreigner.

Edit: found it

SenHeng··on Show HN: Ekselio – Loveable for finance workflows (local first)
Do you have a blog or something documenting your thought process?

I’m building something similar for cash flow prediction and management and would love to know more.

SenHeng··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
The ones in the news lately are the Kurds which the police can’t touch because of some asylum law running various scrapyards, and the Vietnamese car theft gangs.
SenHeng··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
The actual regulation has a carve out for if you have assets of equivalent worth.
SenHeng··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
It restricts immigration to cities where the high wages are, ie. Tokyo which is itself already too crowded, and forces foreigners living in less populated parts of the country to leave, further depopulating it.

It also heavily disadvantages singles.

SenHeng··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
> It would take a whole lot more context to make this somehow comforting. :D

This is this fascinating 6 part documentary about the Chernobyl incident explaining how it was caused by bad control rods. But the main point is that control rods prevent the facility from going boom, so be glad it’s not the AmigaOS emulator on a NT machine handling it.

SenHeng··on Where's the Beef?: The lab-grown-meat revolution that wasn't
I don’t enjoy Soylent as well but the mock meat Buddhist meals made from I-dont-know-what that can be found in countries like Singapore, Taiwan and hongkong are quite delicious.

If you weren’t paying attention, it quite literally tastes and feels like chicken.

SenHeng··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
Copper and various other kind of metal theft has been on a rise lately in Japan too.

SenHeng··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
Canada needs to send Bryan Adams.
SenHeng··on Doing Everyone Else's Job
If you’re part of what is known as the general career track (総合職) and are actually being groomed for (middle) management, it’s common policy to move people every 3 years, in theory it prevents building of fiefdoms while also giving you a chance to improve your network, know the ins and outs of your company/government agency and give you the opportunity to accumulate small wins along the way.

The silly policy also extends towards things like supermarket managers, midsized companies with a country wide branch network public school teachers and other nonmilitary civil service positions.

If you’re a primary school teacher, you likely won’t see your students graduate.

SenHeng··on New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore
In Japan, your work visa belongs to you. You’re free to quit your job immediately upon getting your visa. It’s mandatory to notify immigration of changes to your employment status within 2 weeks but they’re not deporting you just because you switched jobs.

I used to work as a contractor in the earlier stages of my career, that meant that sometimes jobs only lasted 3 months.

SenHeng··on What a time to be alive
Based on the thumbnail I think it’s actually tenderlove making dot com, though I agree with your sentiment.
SenHeng··on Ask HN: Do You Like Skiing?
I liked it so much I based my life around it.

SenHeng··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
Same here. I love m Nike Free from 2018 and still wear them despite how natty they’ve become. But my wife insisted they must go, so I bought the latest version a few months back and it’s just not the same thing anymore. Why do all shoe brands have these gigantic sole cushions nowadays?
SenHeng··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
Old people in Japan are really into Sketchers.
SenHeng··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
There’s a high chance that whoever is in charge thinks they look nice.

After all, someone somewhere thought the PT Cruiser was worth manufacturing.

SenHeng··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin

Article is too long to summarise but basically they outgrew it tech- and org-wise.

SenHeng··on Bending Spoons buying Miro for $1.355B
Whimsical is my favourite tool for that.
SenHeng··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
The way ecocute works is that it heats water at times when electricity is cheap and stores it in a highly insulated tank. So if you’re having a soak in the evening, it’s cheaper to use the water that is already preheated at cheaper rates and stored, than to reheat it again using the expensive to peak time rates.

My rates are 36yen from 6am to 10pm and 19yen on the other end.

Re-reading my earlier post, I should’ve said cost and not energy.

SenHeng··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
> Our Mitsubishi has other nice features like it can recirculate the water in the bath through a heat exchanger after you already filled it and got in, so it will keep the water from cooling down to lukewarm

I've also got the ecocute but I was told that it's cheaper to just pump fresh hot water into the bath than recirculate the cooled down water. It uses less energy to pump the already boiled water into the tub than to heat it back up.

SenHeng··on iPhone Duo
Duo is such a boring name.
SenHeng··on Netherlands pulls gold out of the US for fears of 'geopolitical unrest'
Too bad that MUSGA never caught on then.
SenHeng··on .name Termination
It used to be that only Japanese corporations could register a .co.jp while anyone else anywhere could register for a .jp. So I had several .jp domains registered through Gandi.net.

The issue is that .jp registered outside of a few Japanese registrars are legally not allowed to offer Whois privacy.
