Rynant··on Microsoft intercepting Firefox, Chrome installation on Windows 10 Insider build
Edge didn't have extensions when it first came out, but it does have them now, including: uBlock, Adblock, LastPass, RES, Tampermonkey. Still nowhere near what Firefox or Chrome has though.

Rynant··on How an obscure cult grew to become the dominant religion of the Western world
Looking at 200 years as 20 generations ignores the fact that grandparents can speak directly to their grandchildren, or that people have children past 20 years of age. President John Tyler was in his mid 20s during the Battle of Waterloo, and his grandchildren are still alive - so only 2 generations removed from someone contemporary to that event.
Rynant··on What Style Is That House? Visual Guides to Domestic Architectural Designs
When applying for insurance for our house built in the 1780's, my wife and I couldn't find a style/year combo that the online form would accept. We thought it was a Colonial, but maybe it is Georgian? The farmstead stabled the original Morgan horse sire, and is pictured on page 12 here: https://www.morganhorse.com/upload/photos/905TMH_Jan2015_Jus...
Rynant··on Microsoft Replaces Command Prompt with PowerShell in Latest Windows 10 Build
The issue with "Start-VM -name <TAB>" is not an issue with Powershell itself, but with the Start-VM cmdlet; the Start-VM cmdlet could have been designed to complete from the list of VMs.

What power was stripped? Cmd.exe is still there.

If you type: dir -<Ctrl+Space> PowerShell will list all available parameters below, and allow you to tab through them.

The tab completion is not static either. If you type: ps <Tab>, it will tab through all the current processes.

Rynant··on Show HN: Opinionated Dress Color Simulation
I saw it as white and gold originally, but later when I looked at it I had scrolled down the page so that the top part of the picture was hidden, and I saw the dress as blue and black.

Now I see blue and black if I view the whole image or bottom 2/3rds of the image, and white and gold when viewing the top 1/3rd of the image.

I use a bookmarklet that comes in handy in cases like this:

After clicking the bookmarklet, you can right-click on any element to remove it.
Rynant··on Why Using .* in Regular Expressions Is Almost Never What You Actually Want
Thanks, I see where I was wrong now.

In this case when finding the last match from the end, would the lazy quantifier reduce backtracking? e.g. /(\d)\D*?$/

Rynant··on Why Using .* in Regular Expressions Is Almost Never What You Actually Want
This is not the same as finding the last match though. The parent's example will match '2' in '1 of 2 steps.'
Rynant··on A survey of 911 dispatchers reveals the cost of bad technology
Implementing SMS for 911 is not simple. First of all, many 911 call centers (PSAPs) still use analog equipment [1]

For those PSAPs that do have NG911 equipment, managing an SMS "call" is tricky because SMS messages are not sent on a persistent connection. Each message requires routing through the wireless network to a selective router which then routes the call to a PSAP, and the PSAP routes the message to a call taker. So somehow subsequent messages need to be able to find their way to the same call taker that handled the first message.

- How do all of the routing points know what "call" each message belongs to?

- How do they know when the call ends?

- What happens when the caller's location changes and the wireless network routes through a new selective router?

- What if a PSAP is busy or offline? Unlike normal SMS, messages need to be re-routed.

- 911 calls need to be recorded. Who is responsible for storing the SMS conversations? Sometimes PSAPs are required by a state to record conversations. If the SMS solution is a web-hosted application, state laws may need amending to allow the application provider to record the SMS conversation.

The wireless network, selective router, and PSAP equipment may each be managed by a different entity, so it requires new laws, standards and equipment to coordinate a 911 SMS conversation correctly compared to normal SMS calls where the number that is being sent to maps to a single subscriber.

Rynant··on Senate bill rewrite lets feds read your e-mail without warrants
Hi, I'm in Vermont!

I've always voted against Leahy, but I have almost no hope in voting him out. I think the last incumbent US Senator from Vermont to lose re-election was Luke Poland in 1867.

Rynant··on Nexus 4 Review: Beautifully Crafted, Premium Android Phone
The difference between Windows 7 supporting IPv6 and the Nexus 4 supporting LTE is that LTE requires a physical chip that costs extra to manufacture. Why force all users to pay extra for an LTE radio if most users will not see any benefit from it?
