RobertoG··on The Big Sleep: The most baffling film ever made?
That's great insight about Lynch.

I was totally puzzled by Mulholland Drive, then I read an explanation in a IMDB review, watch it again, and I was amazed that everything made sense. It was encrypted and somebody gave me the keys. That's really an artistic experience.

RobertoG··on SEC charges Netflix insider trading ring
Inside trading of the information in that database would be something!
RobertoG··on Will the rich world’s worker deficit last?
I know that many business, specially small business, struggle.

I'm just saying that is surprising how is not even discussed, like if it was not a factor in what we are talking about.

RobertoG··on Will the rich world’s worker deficit last?
You shouldn't have that kind of conversation without speaking also about profits.

If there is real competitiveness, a company that suffers shortages of an input (workers in this case), would see an increase in price and a fall in profits. Did your friend mentioned profits in the conversation?

Because I'm seeing a lot of this discussions where not even profits is mentioned. Including the article we are discussing by the way, where the word 'profits' doesn't appear.

RobertoG··on Will the rich world’s worker deficit last?
How is that an opposite explanation?
RobertoG··on How Sweden became the Silicon Valley of Europe
That list says that Nigeria and Hong Kong have "moderate" skills in English, their official language. Sounds a little weird to me.
RobertoG··on Mexico is phasing out imports of glyphosate and GMO corn
>>"until recently you couldn't even grow that stuff well in eg most parts of Germany"

He said Europe, not Germany specifically.

RobertoG··on Mexico is phasing out imports of glyphosate and GMO corn
If somebody say something that is wrong and another person correct it, we all learn something.

I think there is nothing wrong with saying your thing, if you do it in a humble way and you don't pretend to be an expert. It's called having a conversation.

RobertoG··on Bring back hydrogen lifting gas
Never mind how crazy is your idea, there is always somebody that it's already trying it:

https://www.zero2infinity.space/bloostar/

Of course, you still have to accelerate to orbit, but you don't have to deal with the atmosphere.

RobertoG··on Crystal arrangement results in more power from ferroelectric solar cells
Here we are, trying to improve solar cells to avoid global warming, and dissidents like you want to add a sun to the solar system.
RobertoG··on Once an Addict, Always an Addict?
In my experience, people who focus on the laziness of others are trying to bring the focus at how they themselves are not lazy. There is something similar going on with overweight. What's so difficult? just eat less! look at me! It's a status game, instead of trying to help.

Anyway, to say to somebody "don't procrastinate" is like given a guitar to somebody and tell them "just play!". Sure man, how?

RobertoG··on Once an Addict, Always an Addict?
>>"I have also read that Vietnam vets did a lot of drugs while in Vietnam but most of them quit when they returned to the US and did so without any kind of treatment."

I have read elsewhere that something that makes a big difference when quitting drugs is change your environment totally. That means, the group of people you spend time with, but maybe, also, work and even home. Moving away to another city or country probably helps.

Frequently, we don't realize to what point we are our environment.

RobertoG··on Bones hoarded by hyenas over thousands of years
The kind of the article seems to be a smaller one, but anyone that it's in permanent warfare with lions is probably somebody you don't want to mess with.
RobertoG··on Israel tries to limit fallout from the Pegasus spyware scandal
>>"Settlers taking land is also interesting. It took quite a while before someone (and none of the big ones) cared to mention that the latest dispute was over Jewish owned land that was stolen by Jordan during their short management of east Jerusalem and sold to Arabs. "

I think I remember reading about that. Are those the properties acquired by an extremist Jewish organization, from the original Jewish owners, in order to be able to legally evict the non-Jewish people living there?

RobertoG··on Square to acquire Afterpay for $29B
>>"or this money will eventually end up as new money in someone's pocket (via new loans) and potentially create inflation. "

For that to happen you need enough credit demand in the economy.

It could happen, and, as you say, the Fed would increase the interest rate making reserves less available (credit more expensive), but the number of reserves in the system doesn't cause directly more money in the economy. It depends of the type of recovery.

RobertoG··on Restaurant prices in the 19th and 20th centuries (2009)
>>"There was huge inflation during WWI, as the government sold war bonds."

I'm not sure of what you are saying there, but it can be interpreted like war bonds is the cause of inflation.

It's exactly the opposite. At war, a government have to use all the available resources for the war effort. That will produce inflation, because the war spending is competing with the private spending for the same resources.

A way to avoid it, is for the government to retire money from the private sector. A way to retire money from the private sector is to sell war bonds to the population. If you buy a war bond, basically what you are doing is promising that you will not spend your money until after the end of the war. Normally you will get some interest for your patriotic sacrifice.

Also, for the gold standard fans out there, imagine what would happen if a government can not mobilize all the available resources of the country because it has not enough gold. That would be the most ridiculous way to loss a war.

RobertoG··on Single-celled organism has evolved a natural mechanical computer
>>"As far as I can make out David Deutsch started Quantum Computation to be able to have a quantum observer to probe the nature of quantum reality."

That's very surprising to me, because Deutsch is heavily in the Everett interpretation branch of possible quantum interpretations (pun intended).

So, he doesn't need any wave-function-collapse magic to explain quantum mechanics.

>>"Remember that quantum theorists have a strange dog in the race due to the whole wave-function-collapse by an observer thing."

That's very insightful.

RobertoG··on Israeli military search team helped recover majority of Surfside victims
>>"Israel is always ready for peace"

That I doubt very much. In my opinion we are seeing a clear on going colonization effort. This is not about religion or race, but about land and the rest is a distraction.

Because we are not in the eighteen century anymore, it can't be done old European style, so it has to be done boiling frog style with a lot of spending in public relations.

The crude fact is that land is being taken by the strongest party:

I have not doubt that the IDF did great, but you have to recognize that this article reads like a puff piece.

RobertoG··on The Galileo Project: Daring to Look Through New Telescopes
I don't think that's the problem, the problem is that progress in cameras is parallel to progress in drones and CGI, so we always will be able to explain away everything. If there is something to this phenomenon, no individual video is going to be enough.

For instance, if we see something like these, the explanation is going to be drones:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVTlN41Mr9w

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5CSReaPNcg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a95YERVRBM

If we see something like these, CGI, I suppose:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wskl8NJ2wU

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cE-Yrv1-chI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JRi7VUZTcA

This one is taken by a military grade camera at night, I suppose it could be a drone or a bird:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1qiZ_L8wX4

Because it's not reproducible it's always possible to explain away everything. It's an epistemology nightmare but I find it very interesting, specially when you have testimonies from people that you don't have a reason to doubt. I have to think if, maybe, our priors are too strong in one direction.

RobertoG··on Can we survive technology? (1955) [pdf]
Even if you assign a low probability to an Armageddon, why you assume that a more "tactic" explosion will come from a small state instead of the states that have the vast majority of weapons in the planet?

>>"I have no clue what I’m talking about. "

Nobody told me we have to specify that! I thought that was the default and we only have to say when we are experts in something!

Now I have to delete all my posts.

RobertoG··on Why is standing more tiring than walking? [audio]
>>"would pay off if it prevents back pain, removes strain from your heart and keeps you more rested while working. "

If that's the case, astronauts should come back healthier from space instead of less healthy.

RobertoG··on A Chemical Hunger: Mysteries
That was an interesting read.

I just left this comment in the site (maybe it would interest somebody here too):

"Have somebody checked a correlation between breast feeding vs. infant formula in early infancy and hungry feelings in adulthood (or weight as a proxy of that)?

It’s just an random idea, but it seems to me that the timeline of increasing obesity and increasing of use of infant formula could be correlated."

RobertoG··on Solar is dirt-cheap and about to get even more powerful
We are probably using the wrong kind of battery for grid storage.

There are some promising techs out there, like Liquid Metal Battery:

RobertoG··on Haiti’s President Is Assassinated
I wached the video again, the guy that is leaving is asking in Spanish "is this one of us?" about the guy in the floor, I think.

I think it could be Dominican Spanish accent, but I could be wrong. I suppose it would make sense to hire mercenaries from Dominican Republic to something like this.

RobertoG··on Haiti’s President Is Assassinated
Something that surprise me is that nobody mention the bodyguards. I doubt the president of a country was unguarded (Olof Palme case showed how unwise that is even in Sweden).

Maybe this unlucky guy in the floor was one and just nobody care enough about them to mention them?.

RobertoG··on Haiti’s President Is Assassinated
What the megaphone guy says? I can't understand it.
RobertoG··on How useful was the Netflix Prize challenge for Netflix?
I think you are right. My impression is that all the UI is dedicated to fool the user perception of the catalog, to make it look better than it is.
RobertoG··on Hydrogen fuel cell cars (2020)
It seems like there is a push for hydrogen in Europe in the last months, and a lot of it seems coming from the big energy companies.

Could be they are trying to find a way to get a piece of the European pandemic recovery funds, which are going mainly to "green" projects?

RobertoG··on Dear Mom and Dad, please stick with me (2020)
Because people up-voted it.
