Don't forget National Wilderness, which is run by all of them, BLM and US Fish & Wildlife, included.
Rimintil··on Fuck being productive
> The entire point of working for someone else is to attain enough money that you don't need to any more and you can treat it as more of an optional thing.

If that were the singular goal/point, then most people should simply give up working entirely because they'll never reach it. They're working their own version of the sunk cost fallacy.

Rimintil··on Fuck being productive
Very few of us in society do work that truly matters. Work is like a colouring book: A complete waste of your time (though work might be less fun, YMMV).

It would be lovely to give up the charade of the importance of work.

> I have to believe most of us here on HN are in the boat of keeping a W11 partition for work and a Linux partition for everything else at this point.

If statistics bear out, you'd be incorrect (at least with regards to a non-Windows OS being run by 'most').

The passphrase is what makes it a poor user experience. Many people simply need an encrypted disk that you can't boot offline and not the boot-time PIN/passphrase (which Microsoft abandoned as the default in Windows 8, I believe, again due to UX).
Rimintil··on The “Location Off” switch on your phone is a lie
It would certainly make you stand out on that network map compared to others who are even more boring than you are (read: just about everyone, sans criminal enterprises as noted above).
Rimintil··on Mercury OS
> The process of moving from App to App generates friction that takes you out of flow and distracts you from your intentions.

Please tell me why my workflow, which works for me, sucks more. What is this magical 'friction'?

Reads like it was written by an MBA.

Rimintil··on A bacterial culprit for rheumatoid arthritis?
That's cheap. $12K/month for two self-administered biologic injections.
Rimintil··on Windows on Btrfs
Yep, I feel (a little) bad for anyone doing node development on Windows (though I probably should feel bad that they're having to dev in JS).

But this isn't an "NTFS problem" as you'll have this occur on any filesystem that supports file system filters, like antivirus.

Rimintil··on Windows on Btrfs
This is due to file system filter [drivers], not the file system. NTFS is perfectly fine and performs well.
Rimintil··on Microsoft plugging more ads into Windows 11 Start Menu
> The font rendering subsystem is why macOS is the go-to choice for graphic designers IIRC.

Nah, it was for the color accuracy of _classic_ Mac OS. Windows caught up in the Vista timeframe.

Rimintil··on Microsoft plugging more ads into Windows 11 Start Menu
> fonts as this is an area where I believe both Linux and macOS are ahead of Windows.

Windows caught up quite some time ago to macOS. I don't see Linux as superior with font handling. Certainly lacks on the rendering side of things (DPI etc).

> comparable with advertising in the Start menu and file browser

Wouldn't know. I use Win 11 Pro so those updates don't seem to have come down to it (yet?) and use Win 10 Ent at work where those will never arrive.

You'll be trading one set of known frustrations with another set of unknown frustrations.

A few years ago, I ran Fedora w/ KDE Plasma. What _seemed_ to be random is the GTK fonts throughout the UI changed to a mono-spaced font regardless of what the control panel showed.

It "resolved itself" within a few weeks.

I don't know if it was an update that caused and subsequently resolved the issue, or something else I did.

This was just one of many hair-pulling examples I ran into across KDE Plasma and Gnome on Fedora.

I have different frustrations with both Windows and macOS.

Rimintil··on Microsoft plugging more ads into Windows 11 Start Menu
> bloat

What _is_ bloat to people? Is it because it has Candy Crush pre-installed? The Settings menu? The install is bigger than Windows 3.11 so it's bloated?

Rimintil··on Apple’s agreement with Cupertino
> That Cupertino offered the best deal for them is a quirk of the law, not a shady deal by Apple

These two things aren't incompatible with each other.

> So $4m a year?

A $2tn company shouldn't be concerned with losing out on $4m.

No need to defend a $2tn company. It's okay to right-size this error.

Rimintil··on The Windows 11 Trash Party
Windows has always had this churn. Upgrading from NT4 > 2000 > XP > Vista, etc all required a time investment to figure out new features, group policies, creating an image (Autopilot removed this requirement), etc.

Win 11 changing the Settings CPL doesn’t change the overall body of work required.

Rimintil··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
> They did not give anywhere near proper notice about the TPM/UEFI/Secureboot requirement ahead of time.

Nearly all machines, DIY included, would have met these requirements. Intel PTT has been built into their processors since 2013. AMD for at least a few years.

Rimintil··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
Macs drain to 80% when plugged in all the time.
Rimintil··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
The chip in the Air is no different from the Pro. And the Air has enough unified memory to drive >1 external display at high resolution.

This limitation is purely artificial/for market segmentation purposes.

Rimintil··on Acropalypse: Windows Save File API is defective by design

Rimintil··on Employee claims she can't use Microsoft Windows for “Religious Reasons”
I can't say I've seen <random state law> written with a "there's no exception to a strongly-held religious belief" within the text. I'm not aware of a general-blanket language that would apply to any and every law in my state, either (and I'm in one of those states where the 'unaffiliated' make up a sizable portion of the population).

Have any of the abortion ban laws been written with any language that would invalidate challenges based on religion, i.e. The Satanic Temple.

Rimintil··on Employee claims she can't use Microsoft Windows for “Religious Reasons”
> The novelty of a "religious idea" shouldn't be a factor as to whether it should be regarded as valid.

This would lead to effective anarchy and defiance of local and national law. It must be regarded as a 'strongly held' belief.
