Rels··on Things you should know about Windows Input, but would rather not
I also hate this behavior. My understanding is that it doesn't get noticed by native users as it's not an issue when the JP input is the only input, so it's mainly an issue for language learners.

It's been on my mind to try the google IME for some time, to see if it fixes this issue, but haven't got around trying it yet.

Rels··on How to found a company in Germany: 14 "easy" steps and lots of pain
As someone that became a permanent resident and later a citizen of Canada, the process was relatively painless compared to what I read for other countries, and could be tracked along its different steps using a web UI.
Rels··on France prepares to ban vegetarian products from using meaty language
Yes it does, as shown by your own link. You translated the "A" part, which is the general definition. There is a "B" part dedicated to the definitions in the cooking domain, "CUISINE" is even spelled out in uppercase letters. The definitions there all refer to meat or fish.

Also anecdotally as a French native, grillade = meat for me.

Rels··on Vietnam bans 'Barbie' movie over South China Sea map
Thanks. I don't understand why it wasn't in the article in the first place.

Crazy that they added such a specific detail to a map that looks like ... that. I agree with Vietnam that it has to be a deliberate move towards being nice to China.

Rels··on How to do the thing you've been avoiding
As-tu essayé italki ? J'utilise ça pour apprendre le japonais.

(BTW awesome French, no weird sentence structure or obvious mistake apart from the missing accent on "est à 2h")

Rels··on Samsung considers moving to Bing as default search engine
A lot of words without a lot of source or data.

The only source linked in the article: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/16/technology/google-search-...

It's probably the only source at all, as every number in the sammobile article is also in the NYT, like the 160+ people working on Magi.

As the sammobile article doesn't appear to do anything but regurgitate what is in the NYT article without any apparent validation on their side, the link should be changed to the NYT IMO, whose article seems at least based on actual internal messages from Google. I understand that the title isn't as attention grabbing though ("Google Devising Radical Search Changes to Beat Back A.I. Rivals").

Rels··on Princess Mononoke: The masterpiece that flummoxed the US
Why?
Rels··on Unbundling Airbnb
As a counterexample, I've had the only bad review I've ever left removed after a couple of days. I don't know how frequent it is, but it made me lose a lot of trust towards Airbnb.
Rels··on History's deadliest air raid happened in Tokyo during World War II (2020)
I thought that the series was done? And I'm adding my recommandation to Hardcore History, it's a great podcast.
Rels··on Cultures where men and women don’t speak the same language (2017)
For French:

I'm tired (male) -> Je suis fatigué

I'm tired (female) -> Je suis fatiguée

Rels··on Ask HN: Are Indeed, LinkedIn the go-to places for exploring new jobs?
I actually just got out of a period where I was looking for a new job. 66% of the offers I got originated from a message I passively received from a recruiter in LinkedIn, including the offer I accepted.

So I would say using LinkedIn in this way seems to be working well: setting up your profile as well as you can, that should make it so you receive endless messages from recruiters. Then when you're looking for a job, just respond to the last messages you got.

Rels··on Court issues permanent injunction in Epic vs. Apple case
I don't understand the logic behind this ruling.

So, Apple was in the wrong about forcing app devs to use their payment processor (and taking a 30% cut at the time - 15% or 30% now), and they have to change that.

But Epic was also in the wrong when they tried to go around this rule, and they have to pay 30% on every transaction they made after their update in which they used direct payment?

But if Epic didn't try to go around the rule and loudly complain, there would be no judicial case, and no ruling forcing Apple to change?

This is weird to me.

Rels··on OWASP Top 10 2021
Yes.

Assuming you also validated the expiry date.

Assuming you also verified that the issuer matched the expected one, and that you didn't fetch keys based on the issuer that is in the token.

Also assuming that the crypto alg is the one you expected.

Rels··on Disassembling Jak and Daxter (2017)
50 dollars? Wow. Before Persona 4 Golden came out on Steam, it was a Vita exclusive. I tried to get my hands on a PSTV to play it, and without remembering the exact price, it was hundreds of dollars at the very minimum everywhere.

I ended up playing Persona 4 Vanilla on emulator, then Golden when it came out on Steam.

Rels··on How The Chronicle is trying to malign Sci-Hub
You both seem to be saying the same thing to me? I'm not a English native, but I'm pretty sure a decade refers to a period of 10 years.
Rels··on Parler drops offline after Amazon pulls support
Is it that hypothetical? Is 8chan back online? Last time I checked it wasn't, though it might have changed in the meantime.

(obligatory disclaimer that I don't use 8chan, and that from the outside it seems like an horrible place)

Rels··on Unicode in five minutes (2013)
I'm not so sure about that, Spolsky's article seems way better at introducing someone to Unicode if they don't know anything about it. The OP article goes way deeper and has more interesting insights about Unicode itself though.

Disclaimer: might be biased because I've discovered Unicode through Spolsky's article.

Rels··on How to Put More “Character” into Your NPCs
I don't think I can be called a visual novel fan, only having played the most popular ones. But these most popular ones were all great.

The Danganronpa and Ace Attorney games have some really good detective stories in it - I think the overall story in those 2 series is pretty bad, but in each game, there is at least one individual case that is great; and Zero Escape is one of the only work of fiction where I thought time travel / parallel universes was done right, without loopholes I could think of.

Rels··on New 13-inch MacBook Pro
I'm charging my Switch with random cables just fine? I've heard that the issue was only with third party docks, not with USB-C cables.
Rels··on The Attempted Corporate Takeover of .Org
Exactly. And that's actually how the .org sell was justified. From http://www.circleid.com/posts/20191127_why_i_voted_to_sell_o... :

"This transaction will put that bigger mission on a solid footing — so that the Internet Society can provide much more substantive help to nonprofits than merely leasing domain names, and with more continuity over time. While it's true that running .org provided a relatively steady income stream, it effectively staked most of our revenue on a single business, and required a certain amount of our resources to be spent managing that business, distracting from the broader mission. Especially as PIR has grown over time, this situation has become increasingly untenable. Establishing a more diverse portfolio of investments will allow us to have more predictable revenue over time, and to take a longer-range perspective when it comes to achieving our mission. "

Rels··on Paris syndrome
What's wrong with this video? For context, I've lived in Paris for 28 years (left 2 years ago), and I just love the haussmannien architecture. Even in this video, you can see quite a few buildings like that, each more extremely elegant than the next. Is this video supposed to be a negative take on Paris? I didn't get why he showed the ongoing manifestation at the end.

EDIT: OK I read the description of the video, what a disgusting human being. He's making the point that no "French" (for the person in question, that apparently means "white") people is left in Paris.

Rels··on Code Pages, Character Encoding, Unicode, UTF-8 and the BOM [video]
That's the first time I've heard about UTF8 files sometimes having a BOM, so that's nice to learn something. :)

I'm wondering if it's widely used.

Rels··on Buster Keaton and the Art of the Gag (2015) [video]
Like others, I recommend absolutely every video of this channel. They were eye opening for me about the ways film makers use to make us feel emotions. And when they had nothing else to say, they just stopped instead of pumping out lesser essays, like some others would do (and did).

The only thing coming close in terms of quality for me is Chroma, but it's French so not known at all in the English speaking internet world.

Rels··on Notes on a Smaller Rust
Strack traces? I love Rust error handling, but the one thing I sometimes miss is that there is no stack traces by default on errors.
