RegBarclay··on Ask HN: How do you switch off from work, particularly when working from home?
Shoes. For me, I have to put on street shoes. Pants too, of course. It's all part of sticking to a routine that I would do if I was going to work in an office. I wear jeans and t-shirts rather than business causal, but I shower, shave, and dress like I'm going to an office.

Taking a walk is a great idea, especially for separating the end of the work day from personal time.

This is exactly why I pay for YNAB. As I'm going through all of these free options I'm wondering what support there is for sharing the information with my spouse and how much manual wrenching I'll have to do to make that work and what my less-technical spouse will have to put up with to work with it.

YNAB is drop-dead simple and available on all of our different platforms. Money well spent.

RegBarclay··on The Diminishing Returns of Everything
I think there is additional value to automating or improving a process even if the time spent automating exceeds the time saved by the automation.

What if it just makes me happy that I can turn the bathroom light on with my voice even though the time spent figuring it out exceeds any time saved by the automation?

What if I make a sucky task at work more approachable and easier by improving it? Rather than procrastinating doing the thing because I hate it, I pick it up and do it right away because I invested some time in making it suck less.

What if I gain skills automating one thing that make me more efficient on the next thing even if I'll never recover the time spent on the first thing?

I scrolled back up to the top of the page to check before I finished reading it.

I was thinking as I read the article that there was a next step innovation in the wings to vary the treatment by patient.

My commute is a lot shorter, which does free up more hours for me, but so far I'm working the same number of hours -- possibly more because it's easy for me to let work bleed over into non-business hours when I work from home.

I know of at least one US college that has completely closed for the rest of the Spring semester: https://www.kentucky.com/news/local/education/article2410586...

There are several other colleges switching to remote learning and limiting on campus activity: https://www.ohio.edu/news/2020/03/president-nellis-provides-...

You'd need a lot of monoliths.

How does the novice programmer know about order of operations? Maybe they are blissfully unaware of both features, but if someone is being taught one feature, they should be taught both. In my case, I'm self-taught and just applied what I learned in basic algebra about parens and boolean logic.
RegBarclay··on People kept working, became healthier while on basic income: report
I'm not sure anything was proven about people continuing to work during a temporary basic income study. If the basic income provided is temporary as part of a study, why would I leave my job when I know I'm going to need the income from my job after the study is over?
RegBarclay··on Hundred Year Mistakes
As I was reading the article I was thinking this isn't an issue if you just use parentheses.

Yes! And if software lets a user do something that lands them in an error condition, then there should be a way to recover from that condition in the software.
RegBarclay··on Becoming a high performing software developer working from your bedroom
Agreed. When I worked from home I did everything I would do to prepare for a day in a regular office except the clothing selection was fully casual. My one biggest rule was that I had to wear regular street shoes. If I was wearing slippers or just socks, my mindset was that I wasn't "at work."

RegBarclay··on The best Cyber Monday deals according to Alexa: any Amazon-owned brand
Amazon isn't a search company, so I think it's a little different case.

Also, if I call a Ford dealer and ask them for their best deals, why would I expect them to tell me about Toyotas?

RegBarclay··on Life expectancy for American men drops for a third year
Agreed that there is a lot of toxicity. But I think there's value in learning to participate without being dragged down by griefers and trolls.

RegBarclay··on Tesla Model 3 = 24% of Small and Midsize Luxury Car Sales in USA
Cost and service (call it reliability) were my biggest issues.

I have a long commute and needed to buy an economical car a little over 2 years ago. I live in a rural community and anticipated that it would be difficult to get a Tesla worked on. I pass multiple Chevy dealers on my way to work, so I bought a Cruze diesel. For the difference in up front cost, I can buy a lot of diesel -- at least enough for the first 200k miles and probably more. And if it breaks, I know I can get it serviced locally.

Teslas are really cool cars, but the math and potential ownership hassles still don't work for me.

RegBarclay··on Hillbillies Need No Elegy
I agree. I'm originally from Charleston and have always said that it's not like the rest of WV.

I'd say the real heart of Appalachia is Pikeville KY.

RegBarclay··on A Learning Secret: Don't Take Notes with a Laptop (2014)
I tend to agree in general. I found that actively listening and paying attention to a lecturer and maybe taking a few sparse notes on some key points or things emphasized by the speaker worked fine. I advised my kids as they went off to college that showing up and paying attention were the most important things they could do.
RegBarclay··on Facebook moderators break NDAs to expose working conditions
I thought the same thing -- that once content is moderated, it should be trivial to block exactly the same content from being posted and moderated again. What a waste.

RegBarclay··on New Type of Dementia Identified
My grandmother died from AD around 30 years ago. My dad has AD now and there's really not been much progress since his mother died. I'm very much hoping that there are some breakthroughs in the next 30 years. I'd rather die from anything else than AD.

I have a similar problem. I plant a lot of cucumbers and cantaloupe. Any vine-like plant that grows along the ground isn't going to work with this. But, I plant tomatoes and peppers on the other end of the garden, so...
RegBarclay··on Everything I know about freelancing
My wife works too, but not at home, so...

It was cool during school breaks to have my older kids at home. Cool during lunch. Not so cool when I had to break up disagreements.

It didn't get really bad for me until I'd been at home 5 or 6 years.

RegBarclay··on Everything I know about freelancing
Not a freelancer, but I've worked remotely...

> It gets pretty dang lonely sometimes, particularly if you’re working remotely. I don’t care if you’re an introvert or extrovert, it’ll affect you either way.

I'm an introvert. I was lonely. It does affect you.

> But for maximum productivity, your routine should involve getting dressed, brushing your teeth, and treating it like a “real job”.

I had to do this. If I wasn't wearing street shoes, I wasn't "at work."

I...uh... used to browse print encyclopedias for fun when I was kid. I frequently ponder what I might have learned or accomplished as a kid when I had all the time in the world to go deep on an interest or a skill if I'd had YouTube and Wikipedia back then.
