RaptorJ··on Are spies more trouble than they're worth?
Considering all the "good" the Dulles brothers did for the world, maybe this is for the best.
RaptorJ··on Pentagon testing mass surveillance balloons across the US
well if "fascism can best be understood as bringing the methods of imperial rule in the colonies into the metropole." Then aside from the obvious imperial attitude of 'its ok since the DOD is developing this for non-americans,' americans themselves might be worried about the future implications of this technology.

RaptorJ··on Empress trees absorb about 103 tons of carbon a year per acre
well, if you convert it all to biochar (say with a 50% volume fudge factor to account for non-carbon components and packing density), you just have to stack an area the size of pennsylvania with 1 meter of biochar each year to zero emissions.

RaptorJ··on Facebook Research Warned of ‘Tipping Point’ Threat to Core App
the intended audience is inside the company. A US Gov GAO report on (eg) transport spending might be called 'internal' to the govt since its primarily public policy recommendations generated by and for the govt, but the report still has to be publicly accessible
RaptorJ··on What's Coming in Python 3.8
I expect the PEP authors want to avoid the "while chunk == read()" class of bugs

RaptorJ··on Howto: Block Amazon and any site using Amazon Web Services
Another of 2-3 stories about the Amazon strike deleted from the front page of Hacker news, it's hard to not be conspiratorial about this.
RaptorJ··on A Giant Asteroid of Gold Won’t Make Us Richer
A better analogy would be if they towed back an asteroid full of $100 bills.
RaptorJ··on Blindsided by a Devastating Veto, Alaska University System Pleads for Lifeline
Well its a great design if your goal is to make sure agrarian slave-state get to keep their slaves. Less so in a country with ideologically coherent (as opposed to regional) parties that control all branches of govt.
RaptorJ··on U.S. Life Expectancy Drops for Third Year in a Row (2018)
naive calculation from an estimated 8% effective rate[0] says a german family making 60,000 would pay 400/month. Additionally however, no deductibles.

RaptorJ··on America's rural radio stations are vanishing
You'll only feel the consequences of printing money if productivity and population stop rising, and seeing as how the earth in infinitely large, I don't see that happening!
RaptorJ··on Finding Friend and Foe in Multi-Agent Games
The text of the paper is a little more precise than the abstract, they picked R:A because it's "the most highly rated hidden role game on boardgamegeek.com."

Just as a player of these games, I'm curious how much weight DeepRole gives to the results of the team Proposal Votes. I find they hold a lot of useful, but hard to parse information which depends heavily on the skill/metagame of your opponents.

RaptorJ··on They Fictionalize Nuclear Disasters Like Chernobyl Because They Kill So Few

RaptorJ··on Tree Style Tabs
I wonder if anyone might have a hint on how I could create a certain behavior for TST.

Generally, I want the TST sidebar to be full width (~250 px) so I can read all the open tabs at once. But when I have several windows open on my screen, the TST bar can take up too much of the window and reduces usability. I'd like to have the TST sidebar to auto-collapse (so it expands on mouse-over) when the firefox window is less than (say) 500 px wide/50% of the screen width.

RaptorJ··on Tesla in autopilot mode crashes into parked Laguna Beach police cruiser
Then it's incumbent on car manufacturers who sell their cars with 'auto-pilot' as a marketing term to educate the public on what that term-of-art means. This might cost some money to do. A line in the manual doesn't count.

RaptorJ··on An Introduction to Tensors for Students of Physics and Engineering (2002) [pdf]
The inner product in the context of tensors is a rank-contraction operation[0]. The IP you know and love contracts over the covariant and contravariant indicies of two rank-1 tensors (vectors). You need a metric to do this so you can raise one of the contravariant indicies to be covariant. If your metric is the normal one (all 1's) then you just add the product of all coefficients. Though if you have the Minkowski metric (like in special relativty) then you negate the time coordinate (or all the space coordinates) and add. Here the matrix might be regarded as a rank 1,1 tensor (one covariant, one contravariant index) that you contract with the vector.

RaptorJ··on Colorado communities secure the right to build their own broadband
I'm not saying this isn't going to happen in Colorado, but it hasn't happened in Chattanooga, TN. They've had municipal broadband since 2009 [1] which far outstrips the national averages for speed and price.

RaptorJ··on Show HN: Poll – Voting done simply in real time
What I really need from straw poll is an option for better voting methods, if we're deciding between more than three choices for streaming we always need to use instant runoff to get an accurate measurement of what people want to watch. Something popular like Schultze voting (maybe implemented with sliders from one to ten instead of entering rank numbers; so it stays as idiot-proof as strawpoll.me)
RaptorJ··on The Awful Reign of the Red Delicious
This is maybe not inconsistent. Kids like Kraft macaroni and cheese and Hotdogs covered in ketchup. We shouldn't expect kids to like "better" foods if they haven't developed a palette yet.
