RaoulP··on Code Is Not Literature (2014)
Please do, I would be interested.
RaoulP··on Stanford president resigns over manipulated research, will retract 3 papers
That sounds so valuable. Even for other fields, like the parent commenter said.

I’m in engineering, but I have a growing interest in journalism. I’ve already graduated and here in Norway we don’t really do double degrees or minors anyway.

My main interest will remain engineering, but if I want to scratch that journalism itch some day, I wonder if I should go for a part-time degree, or just try amateur journalism. I think I’d favour the former.

RaoulP··on Show HN: My platforming game written in C 89
Nice job! How does the drawing work?

I enjoyed trying to reach the very top of the test level. Spotted your greeting :)

RaoulP··on Ask HN: Why does HN require tiny baby fingers to operate on a phone?
That turn of events always struck me as funny too.

Ironically (re. the title), I believe he even referred to the preceding standard of mobile browsing as the “baby web”.

But now “responsive design” has taken over instead. Still no multitouch.

RaoulP··on Apple’s Vision Pro AR headset is finally here
Same here. The fact that a usually "tasteful" company like Apple decided to demonstrate VR intruding into our life in this way, makes me somewhat worried about the future.

By comparison I suddenly find something like the Valve Index and the emphasis on gaming, much more benign.

RaoulP··on Europe needs energy. Moroccan solar may be a clean solution
You're right - I just updated my comment with some terrestrial cable info as you posted this.
RaoulP··on Europe needs energy. Moroccan solar may be a clean solution
I know that Norway has subsea power cables to various European countries. Apparently the North Sea Link[1] which came online in 2021, is the longest such cable in the world at 750 km.

Drawing a 750 km line from the coast of Morocco I can almost reach Barcelona, Spain. With perhaps some advances, and including the distance of the branching network, I think reaching "enough" of European power consumption is doable.

edit: actually, looking at terrestrial interconnectors the record is much farther already, 2210 km between Hami and Zhengzhou in China.[2]

Coincidentally, Wikipedia mentions that the longest proposed cable is in fact the Xlinks Morocco-UK Power Project[3], which the Washington Post article failed to mention. At 3,800 km, the power losses would apparently amount to 13%.

RaoulP··on De-Stressing Booking.com (2019)
That’s great. Thanks Obama.
RaoulP··on Apple will use 100 percent recycled cobalt in batteries by 2025
I find this section on the elimination of plastic from their packaging interesting as well:

> The development of fiber alternatives for packaging components like screen films, wraps, and foam cushioning has kept Apple on track toward this ambitious goal. To address the remaining 4 percent plastic in the company’s packaging footprint, Apple is innovating to replace labels, lamination, and other small uses. In the last year, Apple developed a custom printer to introduce digital printing directly onto the boxes of iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, eliminating the need for most labels. And a new overprint varnish found in iPad Air, iPad Pro, and Apple Watch Series 8 packaging replaces the polypropylene plastic lamination found on boxes and packaging components.

Now I really really want a Suzuki DR-Z400. Thanks!
RaoulP··on Nearly every person in Iraq is an illegal streaming pirate, sources say
I just looked this up myself. It was proposed as part of last year's COMPETES act:

https://prospect.org/politics/congress-proposes-500-million-...

I only found articles on this from when the act was still moving through congress. But the act was passed, so I assume this part did as well.

It feels nefarious to me how acts and budgets in the US can bundle things like this.

RaoulP··on Twitter starts limiting how many tweets you can post per day
I experienced this too, minutes ago
RaoulP··on Fewer people are creating new podcasts these days
Re my comment in this thread, I realise maybe this is the distinction I should make to find good podcasts. I should look for ones without guests.
RaoulP··on Fewer people are creating new podcasts these days
I haven't had interest in podcasts beyond the few occasions I've tried, because I consistently got the sense that a podcast was made in the interest of the creator (as something "low effort"), instead of me as a listener.

It feels like an obligatory side income stream for every "creator" out there, one that only requires them to turn up in front of a microphone and banter once a week. The signal to noise ratio is way off. I don't want to start of with 15 minutes about how the creator's week was.

Nowadays I realise that there are podcasts that are actual "productions" (educational or otherwise), which I would enjoy a lot more. I'm probably missing out on a whole medium. But I haven't come across that many yet.

RaoulP··on Analog Chess
Agreed. But I suppose the creator (an electrical engineering student) thinks of continuous vs. discrete in terms of analog vs. digital signals.
RaoulP··on Windows Subsystem For Linux a.k.a. WSL 1.0.0 released
> It's more compatible if you want to access a usb or serial port.

Yep, that's the case I had in mind.

RaoulP··on Windows Subsystem For Linux a.k.a. WSL 1.0.0 released
Exactly my question. How confusing.

Especially since there is some feature discrepancy between WSL1 and WSL2, sometimes there is a need to use the former.

RaoulP··on Jack Dorsey: “I grew the company size too quickly”
Same for "apologize [sic]", in the same paragraph. That's a bizarre decision by the journalist or editor. Will they [sic] every ou vs. o and s vs z?

I'd either ignore it, or just change the quote to British English, I assume that's not going too far.

edit: apparently it is going too far. Quoting across the Atlantic is a common issue faced by writers, and it seems the consensus is that you always just quote letter-for-letter.

RaoulP··on When you set a 100% CPU program to realtime priority, you get what you asked for
I suppose you're commenting with tongue in cheek but, if cryptominers are gonna cryptomine anyway, I don't see reason to waste energy on OS tasks (if they can manage without them).
RaoulP··on Why I am not going to buy a computer (1987) [pdf]
Thanks, I didn’t realise he was a writer. That does provide some context.

Well said!
RaoulP··on Dentistry is less scientific and more gratuitous than people think (2019)
First thing I thought of too.
RaoulP··on The computers are fast, but you don't know it
I don’t really see the benefit. But running that slow, you might experience the heat death of the universe in your lifetime!
RaoulP··on The great junk transfer is coming
Wonderful perspective, I appreciate it.
RaoulP··on Donald Knuth on work habits, problem solving, and happiness (2020)
My mom is exactly the same and I really admire her for it.
RaoulP··on PhD students face cash crisis with wages that don’t cover living costs
Just to add to that - Students at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology do not pay tuition fees. So the stipend and loan provided by Lånekassen go mainly to living expenses.
RaoulP··on PhD students face cash crisis with wages that don’t cover living costs
I'm curious about this too, in my mind it doesn't add up at all.
RaoulP··on Useless Use of "dd" (2015)
Well, I’d like to thank the author for writing this. I always enjoy having the veil of “magic” lifted from computers.

UNIX’s simplicity of “everything is a file” continues to surprise me, even though it shouldn’t any more. I think a lack of confidence in my understanding of the basics, leaves me tempted to copy from others as you mention.

RaoulP··on D1: Our SQL database
With the mileage (and attention) those new products are getting out of using SQLite, I think Richard Hipp deserves a lot more acknowledgement for creating such an amazing piece of software.
RaoulP··on Preview, the Mac app people forget about
Agreed. In this case the modified title was extra hard to parse because "Tips" is also an iOS app.
