RamenJunkie_··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
Except the US isn't trying to make strong trading partners, its a side effect of the xenophobia and racism. If anything they are alienating anyone who would ever trade because every trade deal for something benign like, steel or whatever will include some random unrelated bull shit like "also if you want to trade you have to round up your trans people."
RamenJunkie_··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
They mean good for everyone NOT the US. Because now say, Germany or France, or where ever, come off as a better place to immigrate, so other countries can build stronger more competitice businesses.

This move, like everything the MAGA administration does, will only weaken the US.

Even better for other countries, anyone the US produces who isn't a raging idiot, also are more likely to want to immigrate from the US.

RamenJunkie_··on Bitwarden scrubs 'Always free' and 'Inclusion' values from its site
If Bitwarden gets sold I am just going back to a paper notebook for passwords.
RamenJunkie_··on Bluesky adds 700k new users in a week
That should be the norm everywhere but one tribe's entire identity is being intolprant of people and things that ultimately have zero effect on them or anyone.
RamenJunkie_··on Bluesky adds 700k new users in a week
Yeah, except Twitter has no moderation anymore, in fact isnhas the opposite problem where people can pay to force their crappy views on everyone with blue checks.

Twitter isn't the problem, Musk is the problem. Twitter was fine until he took over. Bluesky is Twitter - Musk.

RamenJunkie_··on You don't have to be a "content creator" to have a website
I don't know how people do it. I have been blogging for like 20+ years now sometimes regularly, sometimes with gaps. I am lucky if I get 5 visits per day.
RamenJunkie_··on IPTV Anti-Piracy Threats May Increase Male Motivation to Pirate by 30%
It's going to depend entirely on the quality you are looking for. You don't have to go nuts like these people are talking about, you can store tons of movies in 4-10 TBs.
RamenJunkie_··on IPTV Anti-Piracy Threats May Increase Male Motivation to Pirate by 30%
In addition to what the other commenter said, about Disney, I like to download Concerts and live tracks off Youtube, especially when they are early in the career of an artist I like, because you never know when the record company will try to memory hole that stuff and it becomes difficult/impossible to find.

Even with me and other like me, someone int he future has to happen upon someone who saved it, and is willing to share it, if you go looking.

RamenJunkie_··on Grok is an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
In most cases, it's not an "arbitrary world view", it's "reality."
RamenJunkie_··on Grok is an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Yeah, instead of being trained on 4chan Nazis like Tay was, Grok is trained on Twitter Nazis.

Much better.

RamenJunkie_··on X/Twitter will begin charging new users $1 a year to access key features
They basically all have substack newsletters, just move there
RamenJunkie_··on Extroverts more likely to resist vaccines, study shows
I think the problem os your perspective.

Its more like, "Everyone needs to do X so that everyone can BE safer."

RamenJunkie_··on Learn COBOL in a day
The impression I get in some cases, is less that it's the best choice, but more that a lot of companies have decades of data or systems all inter operating with it, and migrating things to something modern would be a nightmare but they can't afford to lose the data.
RamenJunkie_··on So Long, Twitter and Reddit
Same here. some 600k+ Karma and like 13 years on the platform and I completely quit when Baconreader broke.

I added /r/gamedeals and /r/gamebundles and the Fortnite ststus bot to my RSS reader and that's all I follow at all now.

RamenJunkie_··on Using GPT as an HVAC control system
You clearly are not thinking like a level 4 manager who has a vague grasp of how the system works beyond "This costs $X per year, how can we make it $X-1 next year?"
RamenJunkie_··on Using GPT as an HVAC control system
I can't wait for the secondary problems cause by the limitations of "AI" understanding.

We have had some consulting company of people managing these systems in some buildings, and they would basically turn off climate controls in unoccupied spaces.

Then they started having moisture issues in the important spaces because the data spaces are cold, next to an unconditioned empty space, which got hot, and causes condensation on the floors and ceilings.

RamenJunkie_··on Musk’s X Corp sues Israel’s Bright Data for scraping data
Musk had shown over the last year or so that he clearly has no idea how the web or websites work and probably thinks all those links will be magically updated because everyone loves him and wants to make his vision of stupidity be reality and will go and fix them.
RamenJunkie_··on Microsoft Owns the Trademark for “X”
Probably but only because musk removed actual moderation tools and now spends 24x7 furiously refreshing the timeline to manually permaban anyone not sucking up to him.
RamenJunkie_··on Why Businesses Can’t Stop Asking for Tips
Not really, even as a local, you can avoid the place and will probably never see them again. They won't remember you anyway if you did randomly cross paths at Wal-mart or whatever.

And now they aren't getting paid enough, which gives incentive to the employees to demand actual wages instead of the bull shit system we have now.

RamenJunkie_··on The Homepage of the Oldternet
Jobs is pretty notoriously a design OCD type. And he made a widely successful product that is often copied.

These types tend to hate "ugly" things like text over "pretty" things like icons. And minimalism above all else.

RamenJunkie_··on I Am Leaving
All this microblogging drama lately has really shown just how addicted manybpeople are to the popularity and attention engine. Its kind of sad. There were a lot of people saying they would leave when Musk took over. I have not been there since then, but several of my friends have gone back, and its a bit disappointing.
RamenJunkie_··on I Am Leaving
Mail isn't hard. There are several one click mail set ups for docker or a VPS. I ran Mail in a Box for years and never even had to look at it because it was all self updating, unlike my webserver, which I had to remeber to go update occasionally.
RamenJunkie_··on I Am Leaving
The problem there becomes bandwidth. Its better, but upload speeds are still not great and sometimes I think that its intentionally done to help funnel people to using monitizable web services instead of just self hosting everything.
RamenJunkie_··on Customers don't want chat bots
Support Chat: "Thank you for asking about [question], here is a [link to FAQ Page!"

The FAQ Page: "Was this article helpful? If not, contact our support chat!"

Endlessly. It's so stupid.

RamenJunkie_··on Customers don't want chat bots
Sometimes I think this is the point.

Like lately out cell service has been horrible at the house and my wife keeps asking me to call them but why? It's just going to be screaming into the void of some automated system and nothing will be done.

RamenJunkie_··on Threads.net
This is one thing I kind of hate about Mastodon.

And your example isn't even accurate to what is happening.

Imagine signing up for @gmail.com meant you can't send to anyone at @outlook.com because like 2 users on Outlook said something "kind of rude" if you take it out of context and get over sensetive about EVERYTHING.

Like, I am all for inclusion, and fuck rude people etc, but you can see an e tire instance blocked because one user was a jackass to one tiny server admin who stuck the offending instance on some unmoderated blacklist website with something vague like "hate speech".

Its over the top.

RamenJunkie_··on Passwords Are Fine
I like 2FA with an app, not so much SMS.

I really hate all these other trends I keep seeing. Log ins only using Magic Links in emails, which is an ENORMOUS pain in the ass, and now I often have to log in to another service as well.

Or this weird thing sites are doing lately, where the log in page just asks for a username, then loads a second page with the password box. Like WTF is that even accomplishing besides sometimes confusing my password manager. Why do we need this weird intermediate step at all?

RamenJunkie_··on VPN use is at an all-time high – but are people safe?
I use a VPN anytime I am out of the house on my mobile, mostly because it obfuscates things when it comes to advertiser tracking and ISP snooping for advertising data. Better local access security on WiFi points is part of it as well, but ultimately I dislike snooping for ads, which every free WiFi at large businesses is definitely doing.
RamenJunkie_··on Second Life by Linden Lab, the company I've worked for since 2004, turn 20 today [video]
There are plenty of people, but most are in their own little niche groups. I've been coming back to SL off and on since 2006 or so. I think mostly I like creating and building and scripting things.
RamenJunkie_··on Show HN: Learn Python with Minecraft
Last time I looked into it, which I do fairly often because Education Edition has some interesting features not in other versions, you need to be an educator to even get a license for Education Edition.
