RP_Joe··on FBI Opens Criminal Investigation into Baltimore Bridge Collapse
There were reports that the dock people said that they had power failures at the dock while loading/unloading. If that is true, and they did not tell the pilots, that may be a problem.

In the video, there is a lot of deep black smoke. That is almost impossible with number 2 diesel.

Seems like they have probable cause to start an investigation.

RP_Joe··on Ask HN: Are headlights getting brighter or am I getting old?
I have found rose color goggles REALLY help. They change the color of the light. Even people with their bright lights on do not blind me. Just annoying. The goggle is popular with snow skiers. They look goofy on me driving at night, but I can see better. Amazon has many "rose colored clip on sunglasses".
RP_Joe··on The History of FoxPro: Interview with Wayne Ratliff (1986)
Foxpro was a fantastic product until Microsoft killed it.
RP_Joe··on Ask HN: How do you manage your bookmarks?
I use libre office spreadsheets. You can export them to xhtml.

One column for the url another for notes. I have about 10 sheets organized by topic. I click on the xhtml file and it opens in the browser and my links are all there.

Very flexible, easy.

RP_Joe··on Microsoft issues debt to finance LinkedIn purchase
>Microsoft will avoid having to pay a 35 percent tax rate to repatriate cash from overseas accounts. While it’s true that Microsoft has more than $100 billion in cash and cash equivalents, most of it is parked offshore. Bringing home any of it to fund the proposed $26.2 billion purchase, announced on Monday, would generate a tax bill.

Of course if an individual or small business tried that, They would be in jail.

RP_Joe··on Firefox and Thunderbird: A Fork in the Road
This makes sense. They are two different customer bases. Thunderbird is also the leader in its field. I hope they can do even better after the split up.

It runs on six versions of Windows, Mac and Linux. Its the perfect choice for business.

RP_Joe··on The Problem with Electric Vehicles
The problem I have with these arguments is they compare all electric vehicles to all internal combustion engines. I don't think that's realistic. Everyone is not going to convert to electric vehicles.

I think it's terrific that there is diversity in the energy base for transportation. This is very healthy for the economy and for the country in general.

While it's true, that these new technologies may require adjustments, sometimes these adjustments can be overstated.

The actual energy usage for many appliances and industry is going down. LED light bulbs and other technologies are lowering the load to the grid. It's not a simple equation. It's a very complex equation and I don't think anyone has spent the time to factor that. At least I have not seen any studies on that.

This electric vehicle movement is not just about electric cars. People are rethinking their transportation. That's very healthy. It would be great if we continue to improve mass transit in America, so that less vehicles of all types are needed. I think many Americans would like to see that.

We're still also in the very early stages of electric vehicle's engineering. It's not a good idea to extrapolate out into the future based upon the technology of today. It's likely these electric vehicles become even more efficient in the future. As we see more volume in the industry, third-party players will also come in with unique ideas and improvements.

This mix of electric and internal combustion is really exciting. I think it's terrific that people are being lured from internal combustion to electric vehicles. The whole system seems to be going in a good direction. I don't agree with the naysayers. The outlook looks very promising.

These electric vehicles continued to sell even though the price of fuel for internal combustion's has fallen. The price of electricity is much more stable than the price of gasoline. This may also help people in making their decisions.

I suspect in the future we will see families with both electric cars and internal combustion. It will not be either or.

RP_Joe··on Chinese exports plunge 25% in February
"Customs figures showed exports fell to $126.1bn (£88.5bn) last month. That was down 25.4% from a year earlier and worse than an expected fall of about 15%. "

But if you are measuring this in USD, and the deprecated yuan means more volume for less dollars.

RP_Joe··on The Elephant in the Room: Web design work is drying up
Its not just web designers. Its SEO, custom database, email marketing and other areas related to SME websites. Website content have become more complex and expensive at a time when the western economies are taking a hit. You did not mention the low ball outsourcing which is significant also.

RP_Joe··on How to rescue people from deep poverty, and why the best methods work
>This is a clue to why microfinance does not reach the poorest.

I have worked with the poor in developing countries. I am highly skeptical of the claims made by microfinance. This work described here is VERY interesting because it does not involve debt and it ADDS education.

RP_Joe··on How to rescue people from deep poverty, and why the best methods work
>Esther Duflo of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology showed that women who were offered cows, goats and intensive training in the Indian state of West Bengal not only did not fall back into indigent poverty but kept climbing out of it.

Lets not minimize the effect of "intensive training". Education is just as important as the goats.
