Quillbert182··on Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical Magnifica humanitas to be published May 25
While the Vatican does have walls, anyone can pretty much just walk on through them with perhaps a trip through a metal detector, so not sure what you mean.

The Catholic Church also does not teach that there cannot be restrictions on immigration, it simply says that we should treat people with dignity while enforcing such restrictions.

Quillbert182··on Pope tells priests to use their brains, not AI, to write homilies
In Catholicism the homily is not the main point of Mass, it takes a far secondary role to the Eucharist. Bad homilies definitely show up, but from the Catholic perspective that does not diminish or detract from the purpose of the Mass as a whole.
Quillbert182··on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month
Then why could they not also legally get away with using account age as a proxy?
Quillbert182··on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month
But under that argument, you would have to prove your age on a regular basis, the plan right now appears to be that each account would only need to do so once.
Quillbert182··on Pentagon warns Scouts to restore 'core values' or lose military support
Historically, it actually has been very closely aligned with he military. The Scout Oath said at every meeting begins with "On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country." There are undercurrents of military influence throughout a ton of their other traditions as well.
Quillbert182··on Ryanair flight landed at Manchester airport with six minutes of fuel left
Looks like the third attempt was actually in Edinburgh
Quillbert182··on B-2 Spirit Stealth Bombers Begin Unannounced Deployment to Diego Garcia
I would assume Diego Garcia does have the facilities for B-2s. The B-2 has been based there fairly frequently in the past, I believe.
Quillbert182··on TikTok divestment law upheld by federal appeals court
I honestly would be surprised if the Supreme Court agrees to hear the case, there does not seem to be a huge amount of controversy here from a legal standpoint.
Quillbert182··on What Will Enter the Public Domain in 2025?
Grant wrote his autobiography pretty much entirely out of desperation to provide for his family after his death. He had lost everything he had in a Ponzi scheme and was heavily in debt as he was dying from cancer, and the autobiography was his last chance to make money for his family.
Quillbert182··on What Will Enter the Public Domain in 2025?
It actually was, he was almost entirely destitute when he died and the autobiography was his last desperate at providing for his family.
Quillbert182··on Do AI detectors work? Students face false cheating accusations
One of my professors has started doing that, and I would much rather write an essay. I hate interacting with the chatbot. It feels unnatural, and the chatbot tends to drag out the conversations far longer than they need to go. Ideally, they would have students have conversations with TAs instead, which is what several of my classes have done to great success.
Quillbert182··on US Employers Brace for 16M Super Bowl Sick Days
I believe they can because it falls after the new year, multiple NFL playoff games are held on Saturday.
Quillbert182··on ICJ orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, stops short of ordering ceasefire
That assumes that Israel would allow a China-run port in Gaza, which is no guarantee.
Quillbert182··on ICJ orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, stops short of ordering ceasefire
If China tried to land troops in Gaza I imagine they absolutely would.
Quillbert182··on The largest US dam-removal effort to date has begun
I think energy created through a massive, man-made ecological disaster is not really "clean." Maybe low in carbon, but there's more to the environment than the atmosphere.
Quillbert182··on Half of high school seniors won't apply to colleges costing more than $40k
Some states effectively do. Georgia and Florida will pay full tuition for In-State students with high enough GPAs. Students still have to pay some fees, so it isn’t perfect, but it provides incredible value.
Quillbert182··on Suspects can refuse to provide phone passcodes to police, court rules
I can’t seem to find it now, but I remember a news story a while back where a police agency was able to unlock an iPhone with a 6 digit numeric passcode in a little over a year, bypassing the hardware security module and time limits.
Quillbert182··on Walking has plummeted across America

Quillbert182··on Ask HN: How are you bypassing YouTube anti-adblocker?
UBlock Origin on Firefox has been working for me, I just have to update my filters once a week or so.
Quillbert182··on Stop Arguing over Elite Schools. Just Make Public Colleges Free
It’s already free in several states. Georgia pays full tuition for in-state students who maintain a certain GPA, and I know Florida does something similar, both funded completely by a tax on the lottery. Students do still have to pay some fees, but the cost is relatively quite small.
Quillbert182··on Close to 2k environmental activists killed over last decade
They didn’t disable their bodycams. The department that shot Teran doesn’t have them in the first place. This is obviously a problem, but it’s not as serious of a problem as willfully disabling them before shooting someone.
Quillbert182··on Close to 2k environmental activists killed over last decade
While true, how it was explained to me was that the autopsy did a visual inspection, while the GBI test, which was done afterwards, was a more thorough chemical one. However, I don’t have a source on this one.
Quillbert182··on Close to 2k environmental activists killed over last decade
Maybe, but the commenter above claimed that the results weren’t released, which is false.
Quillbert182··on Close to 2k environmental activists killed over last decade
Wikipedia seems to leave out that the state did a more thorough test and did find gun powder residue.

Quillbert182··on Close to 2k environmental activists killed over last decade
You are arguing that climate protestors should be able to shoot people without repercussions?
Quillbert182··on Close to 2k environmental activists killed over last decade
The results were released months ago, gunpowder residue was found on his hands.

Quillbert182··on College football in the US is awash with money
I might be misunderstanding you, but if athletes fail at sports, they do not loose the education. Once a scholarship is given to a player, it is not allowed to be taken away for performance. If a player is kicked off the team (barring something like discipline issues), they still get the scholarship.
Quillbert182··on College football in the US is awash with money
Athletes are not forced to be play sports. They are there because they want to be. If they don't want to do it without pay, no one is making them do it.
Quillbert182··on College football in the US is awash with money
It's not supposed to be a job. It's supposed to be secondary to education. Admittedly, it's getting away from that, but I would like to hold on as long as possible.
Quillbert182··on College football in the US is awash with money
The point here is not mainly focused on athletes ability to make money off of their work, although that is a part of it. The issue in this particular instance is that players are being bribed to switch teams.
