I won’t comment on the finances, but their technical success is self-evident.
X is usually “pick hardware with good support in ToT kernel” or “use distribution Y” (where Y is somehow different in every post) or “do you really need feature Z that’s better on Mac? You’re making the wrong trade.”
To each their own but I’d rather not deal with XYZ and just get the thing that works.
p.s. I do hope they put a toggle back for Siri and their on device AI stuff
The stated end-game should be getting the best people in the world to stay in the US and become citizens.
I feel like this could be a bulwark against offshoring, and in the big picture, protect US jobs overall.
I think the system as-is is fundamentally broken. First and foremost, it needs to include equity when comparing the salary to US persons - H-1Bs are supposed to require "equal pay" to US persons, but they only look at base salary.
I also think consultant firms need to be fixed. They need some cap such as "no more than 1 in 10 engineers in your teams may be H-1B. This should include consultants you use - e.x. if a company employs 20 engineers, and they have 10 active consultants, no more than 3 H1-bs across both in-company employees and consultants used.
The consulting farms are the biggest abusers by far, and the low hanging fruit to target and fix. If we can't figure some workable way to fix it, just ban consulting companies from having H-1Bs outright.
The system is also needlessly cruel to applicants. They should have some long buffer, say on the order of a tourist visa (6 months?) if they lose their job so they have time to try and find a new one before losing status. Can you imagine putting your kids in school and buying a house in an at-will state, on an H-1B? Yeesh.
They have a way to use from Windows, have never tried it:

I thought about self-hosting Bitwarden, but I honestly don’t trust myself to maintain something security-critical (stay on top of patches and also be aware of supply chain attacks to revert patches and all that fun).
There’s nothing as nice as Plex for consuming media IMHO, and home assistant/homebridge glue a pile of cheap IoT stuff into a single, cohesive, useable setup.
I am a reluctant admin. I resent spending time on it. It feels like work, which after 10 hours of doing similar things for much better pay grinds on you. Luckily it doesn’t take much time to keep it going after the initial setup.
Thread and Matter give me hope one day the IoT stuff might be okay. I have no hope I will ever be able to get the single media portal any other way.
- plex has some fancy remote access thing so it can figure out your home network IP without DNS. You need to use VPN/Tailscale or self host something that advertises your IP if you want remote access with Jellyfin.
This is lame if your use case is “my parents remote play from my server from their smart TV” - getting VPN working on a smart TV can be a lot of hassle.
- Jellyfin iOS did not support continuing to play on app switch last I looked (it must have focus or playback stops). Plex app does not have this issue.
I will also say the new pricing structure is a non starter to me, if I wasn’t grandfathered into a lifetime pass from when it was cheaper I would not use Plex anymore. But I do have the pass so I’m not super motivated to change (for now)
I’m at 90%+ code AI generated by stats. I work in embedded systems. It still goes off the rails all of the time and needs a heavy hand to guide it. It does not currently feel like it will ever be truly able to operate independently. It’s a very useful tool, but it’s just not there yet in my day-to-day.
Obviously, YMMV.
