“Licensed crypto recovery”

What license?

Stock photos under “our team.”

“We will work with your budget.”

This looks like a scam.

QuarterRoy··on Reddit is ending Reddit Gold and users are furious
Users aren’t that furious or they’d go somewhere else.

Reddit users see no irony in complaining about Reddit changes and policy on Reddit.

Reddit leadership won the API fight by threatening to remove mods. Then they brought back /r/place to distract users from all the changes.

Until users start leaving the platform Reddit will continue on its path of forcing everyone to use their app and looking at a near term IPO.

QuarterRoy··on Why kernel drivers in Anti-Cheat aren't so bad
“The oldest mention I've found of people complaining about kernel drivers in Anti-Cheat were in an article from 2016. However the first time I saw it was when the game Valorant was released with its new Anti-Cheat Vanguard, which is still very controversial to this day. This happened in 2020.”

This goes back much further.

Sony DRM running kernel drivers was 2005 and there were video game anti-cheat programs using similar approaches around the same time.

It was also around this time that Joanna Rutkowska was giving talks at blackhat and defcon on her research (redpill and bluepill) and rootkits which led to discussion, research, and media articles on anti-cheat and other applications.

QuarterRoy··on Do you still subscribe to newsletters?
No. My inbox is already hell even with filters and rules.

And I love how we were going to not be so independent on email when slack and others came out and now I have to be logged into slack, MS teams, and 2 other apps as well as email due to the different apps adopted by various customers.

QuarterRoy··on Lawyers who cited fake cases hallucinated by ChatGPT must pay
It would take 2 minutes to check on Nexus Lexis to see if these were real cases. Lazy.
QuarterRoy··on Reddit is battling moderators marking their communities NSFW
One of the things I’ve found most fascinating through this saga is how many people are complaining about what’s going on with Reddit on reddit.

If you aren’t willing to leave and the userbase doesn’t significantly decrease it doesn’t matter.

Platform is important but it’s still secondary to number of users and communities in the world of social media.

QuarterRoy··on Reddit CEO tells employees that subreddit blackout ‘will pass’
His job is to double down on getting Reddit public with a successful IPO.

Investors want their $ back out of Reddit

QuarterRoy··on Reddit CEO tells employees that subreddit blackout ‘will pass’
I think he went about this completely in the wrong way and comes off as arrogant but on this I agree.

Many subs that didn’t go dark still seem to have plenty of participants and people need their digital crack.

I don’t see this being a digg moment for Reddit.

QuarterRoy··on Fool's Gold Loaf
Are we really cross-posting things from Reddit here now?

Please don’t

QuarterRoy··on Ask HN: What and where is the best place to start with self-hosted smart home?
Homeassistant or openHAB
QuarterRoy··on Mainstream Media Couldn’t Get Enough of “Havana Syndrome”
I have a friend who works for the state department overseas. He came to visit a few months ago - he’s in his mid 30s and now has to wear a hearing aid.

He also often loses his balance due to vertigo. I witnessed this first hand and had to prevent him from falling.

Whatever the cause, this is not something that’s made up, it has severely complicated his life and his partner’s.

QuarterRoy··on Roth IRAs Have Transformed into Big Tax Shelters for the Wealthy
All the articles against the backdoor Roth reference Peter Thiel’s Roth. That is a very, very rare situation and he purchased PayPal stock for nothing using his Roth because it was a startup. PayPal could have taken a different turn and failed.

Yes there’s a tax benefit to backdoor roth but the max contribution is $6000 a year and most people are going to get index fund rate of returns and not Peter Thiel’s home run.

And Thiel did not get around the max contribution rate.

QuarterRoy··on FFmpeg 6.0
I love software that just does what it’s supposed to do and is so good at it that it’s an underpinning for other projects.

FFmpeg, curl, nmap, et., al.

QuarterRoy··on 25 Years Ago, Apple Killed the Newton
My first job was writing software for the newton. It was ahead of its time - calligrapher (what they called their handwriting recognition software) was actually useable and worked better than anything else out there. Battery life was good.

Ended up having to move the business application that the company I was working for used over to windows CE

QuarterRoy··on Despite high inflation, Americans are spending like crazy; it's kind of puzzling
This is exactly it. The goal with rising rates is to cool the economy (soft landing vs a crash). That almost always means a rise in unemployment - the late 70s and early 80s economic crisis played out exactly like this.

Despite tech layoffs unemployment still remains relatively low. The hikes are not having the intended effects.

QuarterRoy··on Notion AI is here, for everyone

QuarterRoy··on Ask HN: Why did you decline a FAANG opportunity?
The money offered was good but when compared to the cost of living of having to relocate and my then company’s benefits and pay (although less) the delta/net benefit was not enough to make me move.

This was 12 years ago and the salary plus stock was nothing to sneeze at. I have zero regrets.

QuarterRoy··on Ask HN: Why BSD kernels are so much more stable? Linux is addicted to jamming
People don’t remember the good ole days if NT 4.0
QuarterRoy··on ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Live-Action Series Ordered by Paramount+
And the tiny dungeon master.

As a kid who played D&D I never understood why the cartoon dungeon master was the guide and friend - when playing D&D our dungeon master was pretty much trying to kill us all the time

QuarterRoy··on Ask HN: Will we ever have something better than Bluetooth?
This is funny to me because I remember going to a talk at comdex years ago and the speaker kept saying “Bluetooth is coming I’m so tired of hearing this” and then he made a sarcastic comment about how Bluetooth would connect his belt and shoes and phone and everything else and everyone laughed.
QuarterRoy··on Ask HN: Has anyone wired up ChatGPT to chat with itself?
Divide by zero
QuarterRoy··on Whatever Happened to Six Sigma?
I worked for a company that went all in on six sigma. They didn’t manufacture a single thing, only services. It made absolutely no sense but was something someone high in the company decided on so everyone below them (especially mid level managers and ladder climbers) were preaching the gospel of six sigma. It became a game in which managers could get the most of their team with the higher belts through carrot or stick.

Millions were wasted on six sigma training and who knows how many hours.

I’m old enough now to have seen this game many times at large companies. Someone adopts a methodology or if they’re really savvy they invent their own and then managers work to try to get their team to shoehorn something exciting they’re working on (or a big sales win) into the process so the process gets credit and the managers get recognition

QuarterRoy··on Networking and High-Frequency Trading
Network companies like Cisco sell high end network devices that do ULL (ultra low latency) for use cases like HFT
QuarterRoy··on Ask HN: Why do so many CXOs hate talking to tech teams?
I’ve talked to multiple C-level execs in my career.

There are many different leadership and communication styles but at that level you need to be succinct, direct, and know at least something about the business challenges they have.

A lot of technical employees want to jump right into technical problem solving - and sometimes that’s fine given context and audience or if you already have a relationship with the audience - but in my experience you need to understand their world and how what what you bring to the table is relating to the business and their direct care abouts.

QuarterRoy··on The 1993 Murder She Wrote VR episode (2014)
I’ve seen this episode recently. Murder She Wrote is one of my guilty pleasures.
QuarterRoy··on Has a Chinese-born professor discovered a big piece to the Rieman hypothesis?
It’s not but the source is the South China Post and the professor is now at UC Santa Barbara.

It’s an attempt to draw the attention of their audience.

QuarterRoy··on Ask HN: I will become a father tomorrow, what advice could you share with me?
Learn how to change diapers. Be understanding. Wake up in the middle of the night with your child when you can and while it makes sense (some mothers want to split feeding duties and some don’t). Be a partner and recognize that while there’s a lot on your partner during this time you both brought this human into the world.

There’s no magic formula and that’s ok.

QuarterRoy··on “Metaverse is a word I will never use“ – Greg Joswiak, Apple SVP Marketing
Zuckerverse vs Appleverse
QuarterRoy··on Ask HN: What Happened to the Reddit IPO?
That’s not even the worst part of the new UI - scroll for any amount of time on mobile or make a post and you get nagged to switch to their app.
QuarterRoy··on Is iTerm2 Still Maintained?
I’ve had a lot of memory leak problems with it recently that I’ve never had before
