Pyrodogg··on Google sued for negligence after man died following map directions
I won't put all of my issue on Google maps, also the County takes a big share. But when I was visiting my hometown recently I heard about a bridge that had been taken out months previously and was in the process of being replaced.

None of the signs said "bridge out" just "road closed ahead". The state maps that overlayed the area but about another project showed no information about the bridge being out for most of a year.

Google happily routed over the bridge that had been out for months. I reported it but haven't followed up on it. It's open again now recently.

It's almost like no one wanted to acknowledge the bridge being out even though it got reported in local media early on.

I can hardly believe there was no barrier to a drop from a missing bridge. I mean people can easily do worse driving off of a paved roadway but to being continuing on a what seems like a safe path is just nuts.

Pyrodogg··on Florida man arrested after trying to cross Atlantic in hamster wheel vessel
11. That much windage, and nothing like a keel. He'd be going wherever the wind wants to take him.
Pyrodogg··on Is not even owning a laptop the new norm for post-college GenZ?
Annecdote, but I know of one college grad that recently got hired for devops-ish work and they didn't know how to operate basic functions of a word processor using a keyboard. Things like Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V for copy/paste. Interactions so common it shouldn't even matter much which OS you're using, just that it has a keyboard.

However, If you're swiping over text, pressing, long-pressing to get prompts to copy/paste as on a mobile or tablet, you might never encounter these things or not enough for these operations to be automatic.

Pyrodogg··on Shining a light on the digital dark age
Photobucket recently asked for me to pay for service because they don't do free anymore. I was hosting an old, old forum signature and little else, it was a nice bit of nostalgia.

I made sure the backed-up copy on my machine was ok. Then I purged my bucket and am proceeding to delete my long-stagnant account.

Can't fault them for trying to make money but it sure seems capitalism is a big fan of entropy. And it's good to remember that you see your data as an asset, while it's aways a liability for a company providing services; free, paid, or otherwise.

If I didn't happen to have the same email, I wouldn't have received the account deletion email to even check what was in there (and reset my password). A whole lot of early social internet content is gonna get poofed quite soon.

Pyrodogg··on Artificial Intelligence and Copyright: Request for comments
I'm not sure what it's feelings are on the topic but Ask Jesus is a thing on twitch rn. NSFW (It's chat generated content on Twitch)

https://www.twitch.tv/ask_jesus

It takes chat prompts and weaves together scripture, The Internet, odd pronunciation, callbacks to other questions, and hilarious fails when chat gets, uh, playful.

AI Jesus just said there is a time and place for everything and that it might just be the time to buy Starfield. It knew it was a game being only prompted with, 'Jesus, should I buy Starfield?'

Pyrodogg··on My father may be gone, but ‘our’ radio is still going
My dad always had a radio tuned to a local country station playing lowly in the garage, 24/7. The thing never turned off.

He passed in 2016, and now the radio plays away situated on a workbench in my brothers garage. It gets turned up when someone is actually working out there, but only turned down and not off when they retire to the house.

As I recall this, I remember it wasn't even just the most recent model. Repairing radios wasn't his thing so eventually they'd get replaced when broken, but I can recall at least two distinct radios over the years so I really think he'd been doing that for quite many years.

Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
By far my most used actions for triggering Dell Display Manager to switch my monitor inputs. I don't have a full kvm set-up (separate keyboard, mouse but shared monitor) for my home desktop, work laptop.

I also have media control buttons to control music playing on my desktop throughout the day without having to toggle the monitor. A mute button to silence things for calls is also frequently used.

Finally, extra buttons to toggle some smart lights if I need to override some pre-programmed schedule.

Other than that, It's been a bit of overkill.

Pyrodogg··on Meta plans to lay off 10k employees
About as good as musk Tweeting that phone calls are better than tweets for actually connecting with some.
Pyrodogg··on Magic the Gathering content creator pleas YouTube to stop scammer bot deluge
Someone (YouTube) should just run a recurring ad campaign. Instead of traditional ads it's "Congratulations, you're one of today's lucky 10,000 and you're going to learn about bots and boundaries you should establish while on this platform." [0]

The number could be scaled up. They could select out populations that seem 'with it' and bias it toward anyone who interacts with bot comments other than to report them. I'm sure there are other useful signals.

Without getting into the 'how to block bots' side of the problem, this is one way YouTube could help with the user education without individual creators having to make videos like this or recurring community posts. As noted in other comments, a purely technical solution to ban bots probably isn't going to work.

Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: Small scripts, hacks and automations you're proud of?
This shortcut tip combined with a short power shell scripts save me what feels like hours a month. Super quick access to certain things, dynamically, as the script takes input after it's name versus navigating guis.
Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: What was your first impression of the Internet?
(Also 36) It might not be my very first experience, but I remember computers in the school library being "locked down" such that you couldn't directly launch IE. But you could open Word and File - Open... "http://yahoo.com" (or whatever) which would launch IE. So at least some of my clearest early Internet memories are circumventing access controls.

I missed the AOL train, but I remember my cousins being into it when I'd visit them in "the city" (the also had cable television). I don't think we had a computer at my dad's house until Windows Me when I was nearing high school age.

I know my mom on the other-hand was rocking dial-up for email and browsing on a Windows 95/98? machine. But as things went, I spent a majority of time at dad's.

Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: How are you celebrating New Year’s Eve?
In Finland, NYE the single evening of the year on which launching personal fireworks is allowed. I'll probably go out for a walk and try to take some pictures of people doing questionable things. The city is also putting on a concert and fireworks show I plan to watch.

However, the weather today has been November-levels of disappointment inducing and the nice snow from early December is melted. :<

I love the tradition of fireworks on New Years, as long as people are sensible about it. I don't appreciate them going off right off my balcony.

I'd love to spend another New Years in Reykjavik someday. I don't think I've ever seen fireworks like that anywhere else.

Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: How to start a public identity from scratch in late 2022?
Increasingly, everywhere and all at once.

Even YouTube is now starting to enable (and subtly push) more text and picture content alongside video. The Community tab feature used to be gated to channels with more than 1000 subscribers but now it seems to be available to maybe everyone. The other days I noticed a very prominent "Create Post" button from the video share menu.

All of the feature copying between major platforms and wall raising may increasingly trap attention within different platforms.

Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: How many HN users are moving to Mastodon from Twitter?
I've been feeling burned out on social media for a while even before Elon hit Twitter. I have very few real connections on Twitter so it's just been a consumption platform for me. Considering to let it die and take a break from things. I'm not eager to go chasing content creators to various different platforms. I need more platforms to watch as much as I need a swift kick to the head.
Pyrodogg··on It’s mid December and I just took a cold shower
I can't say I'm a fan of cold showers all on their own. However, between sessions in a sauna and absent a frozen lake to dip in, a cold shower is fantastically invigorating. Then back to the sauna.
Pyrodogg··on Just a bunch of idiots having fun: a photo history of the LAN party
I'm legit skittish about having to reinstall or update windows on my PC because I don't have convenient access to my Battlefield 2 discs and there's a good chance an old friend of mine will be trying to get me on an AIX match any random weekend. I made it to Windows 10 and this machine cannot go to 11 anyway so I'm fairly safe for now.

An update to Battlefield 2 with fairly open servers (and an ability to mod) would be an amazing game and platform. But yea it would have to be coming from somewhere else I have no hopes on EA.

Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: What are your “scratch own itch” projects?
Nice catalog! YouTube channel discovery is terrible even for people already subscribed to channels. Simply clicking on English -> Photography brought me back to a few people I subscribe to but haven't checked out in over a year. They literally never surface in my recommendations even though I'm subbed.
Pyrodogg··on Twitter, when the wall came down
That's largely the way I've viewed it as well by being exposed to more prominent infosec people than A-list celebrities.

But it's also not enough. You can change your name, photo, bio, to be like someone else, even if you have the checkmark. Users have to also read the handle (unique within the app), but the page styling gives that significantly less emphasis.

Jeph Jacques, author of Questionable Content webcomic and verified Twitter user, has been having fun this week by making a parody of Musks's account. https://twitter.com/jephjacques (currently partially restricted, but you can click through)

"Name + Checkmark" doesn't make a good certificate of authenticity.

Pyrodogg··on Tell HN: YouTube's web UI just got even worse
5 out of 12 recommends are future streams/premiers all from the same channel. I like the channel's content but 5/12 suggestions for something I can't even watch _right now_ is just a joke.
Pyrodogg··on Factorio is coming to Nintendo Switch
Mostly I'd just miss Squeak Through. It's like trying to play Skyrim without SkyUI. I barely think of these things as mods anymore, they should just be there.
Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: How do you find the weird parts of the web?
Following this tangent, I think Twitter has some of the worst dark pattern UX about this. Sure, middle click opens a new tab but it also hijacks focus instead of loading in the background. It's really frustrating when I see X interesting things and want to open them all at once and then go through the tabs.
Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: If I enter account or order in a phone tree, why am I asked again?
I suppose it also let's the entity running the IVR to monitor and log things themselves. Now they know what you called about, and to which third party they directed your call to. If the first party runs the post call questionnaire, they might get full loop feedback on how their contractor is handling calls; from the end user an not the contractor.
Pyrodogg··on Evaluation of TikTok vs. Instagram Reels
Not being able to scrub video is an accessibility issue. If you don't catch something on the first watch, it's incredibly frustrating to re-watch the whole thing instead of going back a few seconds. Even if it's 'short' content. Looping the whole clip again isn't useful to someone who just wants to re-listen to one line so that they are sure they understood it correctly. In one case, a small nuisance; very frustrating in the general sense.

In the case of YouTube the extra pain is that I've trained 'double tap' a YT video for scrubbing. But what does that interaction do on a Short, in the YT app?! Like! It likes the video instead of scrubbing. On something that doesn't seem any different from a short normal YouTube video.

Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: Europeans, what keyboard layout do you use for programming?
Not op, but I use this system which has instructions for installing to Linux, Windows, and macOS. [1]

It's described as "QWERTY for Western European languages" and supports quite a few characters with simple AltGr (right alt) key combos. Alt+o = ö Alt+a = ä

(American living in Europe, I haven't wanted to move from US QWERTY physical layout, but needed an extended character set in daily use)

Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: Why has quality of YouTube reduced drastically?
I wonder how much removing the public downvote count has led people to reduce or stop reporting altogether. Now it's just another signal that does into the void, so who cares. Its now solely up to YouTube to consider that metric and possibly down rank videos. It used to, at least in part, be a social effect. It was an aggregate signal from many people to many people. Even if YouTube didn't consider it at all in ranking it would have power. Now YouTube is on the hook for modeling all of that.
Pyrodogg··on Fran Blanche: This Is Not Legal
The Lofi Girl streams were recently taken down by a false DMCA claim. https://twitter.com/lofigirl/status/1546601374527508480

After public outcry, YouTube issued an apology and banned the claimant.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/phoebeliu/2022/07/12/lofi-girl-...

While I'm an occasional stream listener, I've been mostly away from tech for a month and only noticed the coverage in this video from TAETRO.

"a big problem for music producers on youtube" - TAETRO https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A49EKpd5rrE

They talk about the Lofi Girl situation and also describe the same issue Fran describes but with sample-based music production (as opposed to sample-based video production). Even if you're using non-exclusive, royalty free samples, you can get screwed by another producer using the same samples.

"My Video Was Demonetized by 16 Record Labels...I'm Pissed" - Rick Beato https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3NnrWrkKZM

This is another take on the broader issue of hyper aggressive algorithms being poor judges of Fair Use. Rick has a few great videos on the subject (any many more on making music).

Pyrodogg··on Stores weigh paying you not to bring back unwanted items

Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: What camera do you use?
For day-to-day I use my smartphone, currently a Pixel 3. It's also used frequently for situations that are more than mundane but where I don't want to make it a Photo Thing.

When I want to specifically set out to exercise my photo hobby, I usually take my Cannon R5 mirrorless, lens(es) and appropriate other accessories. I picked it up last year, migrating from a DSLR.

For some time I carried a Cannon compact in my daily carry bag but I just rarely pulled it out, usually relying on my phone. So I operate at either end of the spectrum.

Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: Do you clean out your downloads folder after each download?
At work I have a PS script to move everything older than a few days in Downloads to an Archive folder where they sit for a few extra days "in case" and then to the recycle bin. It runs every time I log on to the machine.

At home, I really want to do the same, but already have too many things to catch-up on organizing. I do have a dummy file name "!! Downloads is not permanent" So it usually sorts to the top.
