Pmop··on Build and Host AI-Powered Apps with Claude – No Deployment Needed
Yep. Meanwhile I’m trying to figure out how can I make something that people would want to pay for, and how can I charge them, if they’re going to interact directly with Claude and burn their own quota.
Pmop··on Enterprises are getting stuck in AI pilot hell, say Chatterbox Labs execs
And a lot of them cannot get up to speed, even when they want to. Many big corporations struggle with evolution and innovation due to crippling bureaucracy, created and supported by risk averse leadership. This is usually worse for publicly traded companies.

Unless it is something like Meta, then they have a Zuck, someone smart, with enough oversight and power, who can drain the swamp and make the whole machine move.

Pmop··on Don’t let an LLM make decisions or execute business logic
Not only "our context window" is larger but we can add and remove from it on-the-fly, or rely on somebody else who, for that very specific problem, has a far better informed "context window", that BTW they're adding to/removing from on-the-fly as well.
Pmop··on Mark Zuckerberg explains why so many tech companies are doing layoffs
Twitter as a non critical application can afford to malfunction for a couple of minutes or maybe hours even.

I think they're not understaffed, for now. They're delivering new features and fixing most bugs. A understaffed engineering team usually struggles with that.

Pmop··on Sora: Creating video from text
We all are going to get automated out of the workforce together :)
Pmop··on Ruby on Rails: The Documentary [video]
Not "any" but "most". I've worked for a company whose RoR codebase/structure looked completely different from the usual because they used a Domain Driven Design-inspired architecture.
Pmop··on Ask HN: Is the market bad, or am I having the worst luck job hunting?
I also had good results with recruiters. They will actually get you at the door, so you better be prepared. Seems to be a decent strategy for people who are bad at networking like I am.
Pmop··on Let us serve you, but don't bring us down
There's a demand, why not supply it, and make money while you are at it?

This reminds me of the RMT driven botting problem in WoW (World of Warcraft). Instead of fighting the neverending game of cat and mouse against botters, Blizzard just decided to supply the long reprimanded demand for in-game currency by creating the WoW token, and they make money while they're at.

Pmop··on The taxman will eventually come for AI, too
Yeah but people will still have to generate excess produce somehow in order to have something to trade for those (now cheaper) goods, and with automation taking both skilled and unskilled jobs out of the market, I keep wondering what kind of jobs will be left available for the average Joe.
Pmop··on Iceland long term visa for remote workers
Isn't Iceland inhabited by like 340k people? Maybe they're testing the waters or trying to limit how many people end up moving there.

Overall I agree. DNs would use Portugal's D7 to move in (in an exception of what the visa was originally intended to), but then Portugal introduced a DN visa which now requires a much higher income than what D7 requires, I think 4x times more than D7.

Pmop··on Excess management is costing the U.S. $3T per year (2016)
Obviously not the OP but are you trying to imply that mgmnt do sale's work? They don't. The sales people are important, a company can hardly function without them. Meanwhile you can fire all of the management and the company will still work just fine, if not better.
Pmop··on Writing by hand is still the best way to retain information
The best way to retain information is by burning it into your brain with spaced repetition and Anki to help.
Pmop··on Bitcoin falls under $16,000
And unlike those things, Bitcoin cannot be confiscated by the government, specially third world tyrannical governments that seem to always be trying their hardest to impoverish and screw those under their administration.

> it's a pyramid scheme

That's your opinion.

> easily replaced by any other shitcoin

It's not.

Pmop··on India lifted 415M out of poverty in 15 years, says UN
So they lifted almost twice my home country's population out of poverty in 15 years? That's impressive. Also, how did India got to have so many people?
Pmop··on Tell HN: YouTube's web UI just got even worse
I do the same thing. I also have search/watch history turned off.
Pmop··on Made in America is back, leaving US factories scrambling to find workers
I will never understand how today's industry productivity is the highest it has ever been, yet workers wages/purchasing power hasn't followed, it even got reduced. What the heck is going on?
Pmop··on Sony is ready to admit that mobile gaming is too big to ignore
Yep. Been following this for a while. Mobile games are basically built for "hunting whales": people with deep pockets and nothing else to spend on other than games, so they'll happily drop tens of thousands of dollars on gacha gambling crap. https://youtu.be/xNjI03CGkb4
Pmop··on Brazilian Amazon lost 18 trees per second in 2021
I live close and know people who livelihoods depends on that forest. Believe it or not, it's not the farmers or loggers fault. Their livelihoods depends on that forest. Farmers depend on the rain cycle. Loggers depend on the forest staying healthy, so new trees grow so they can keep their business going. Illegal logging does happen but it isn't their fault exclusively either.

The root cause is illegal occupation and settlement of land. People invade other people's land, often federal land, they cut down all of the trees, they burn it down, so they can clear it to set up makeshift camps. They then split and sell the land. Once there are people living on it, it's pretty much a lost cause due to how loosely enforced private ownership of land is, specially federal land. Also, it's a lucrative business, and involves corruption in all levels. People affected by it, like loggers who lose their property and livelihoods can hardly do anything, since the invaders will often get violent and the State wont do anything.

Pmop··on Electrical engineers on the brink of extinction threaten entire tech ecosystems
I think it has to do with how much money some job will produce over the investment, and also OFC due to to supply/demand. How hard a job is, is kind of irrelevant for the compensation.

Due to the nature of SW, you can reach thousands of customers with little investment, so you may as well slap a fat margin on it. There are SW products associated with pretty much any economic activity these days, from textile machines to farm management (got job offers to work on products in these areas recently), so SWEs are in high demand. And if the market is not doing well, you can always strike on your own and try building something people will want to use and to pay for, for little investment (again).

Pmop··on Tell HN: Brother printers now locking out non-OEM paraphernalia
> printers aren't needed by most people, and those who do need them don't need as much ink

Cool anecdote. Here in Brazil, some small shops and cybercaffes will offer copy/printing services to you for a small change. That's usually where people go if they have to print/scan something. BTW this service is also know as Xerox.

I saw some shops running on retail printers, but most use those printers you can just fill with cheap ink.

Pmop··on Why the full stack engineer is problematic (2020)
I think being full stack is doable to some extent, I often find that it's easier to design a good solution that you can deliver in a timely manner if you know more of the stack. You'll face less "glue code" and "domain change" issues, so you ship stuff faster. I think the challenge is being full stack, understanding deeply each layer of the stack, and being comfortable with the fact that you'll be paid the same compensation regardless of if you're doing 2~4 persons jobs.
Pmop··on “Google” programmers. How one idiot hired a couple more idiots
We all jiggle bits of code around to some extent. I doubt everyone here is writing their own lang/interpreter/compiler/std library/network stack. I think the offending part is not understanding what the hell you're jiggling around.

BTW as bad as the "jiggle programmer" there's the "superenterprise software engineer" who can't ship code because they spend way too much time writing stuff from scratch, making sure it follows all the good principles and software patterns, and that the code is super optimal and covers all edge cases.

Pmop··on Apple Just Wrecked 15 Startups in Less Than 1 Hour
"Buy now, pay later" This is something that's really widespread where I live. You can buy stuff with your credit card and it pay over 12x months "without interest" (we know everyone is sharing interest costs instead). And many people do this. Instead of saving, they just buy the thing they want and pay it over the year with their monthly income.
Pmop··on Ask HN: In these uncertain times, how do you handle anxiousness
Turn off the news and social media. That's it.

Edit: Therapy as suggested by others also. Still, turning off the news and social media can have positive effects at little to no costs.

Pmop··on Tech Salaries in 2022: Why the Six Figure Pay Makes Techies Feel Underpaid
Meanwhile I'm making ~1/10th of the average. Been applying but looks like companies are looking for folks with +4yr experience. US and UK companies are no go since most aren't hiring people located outside of the US, and the few that do, it's for 1/10th of the average pay again.

Making +100k USD would be nice but I'm looking for 20k or maybe 30k, that would be way more than what I'm making currently. Can anyone share some tips? Should I just grind it out until I have enough yrs of experience to compete/be eligible for higher paying jobs?

Pmop··on Software Jailbreak for Any Kindle
Here you go: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/JzuIGbGPpig
Pmop··on Guido van Rossum: Let Web3 die in a flaming ball of fire
Works for me. We enjoy the same benefits high capital enjoys when investing on crypto. Saves lots on paperwork and taxes. Plus, now I can save my wealth from being stolen by the govt when it decides to print it's way into our 6th currency.
Pmop··on Just Say No to Central Bank Digital Currencies
I too believe that the path in which we progress towards peace and prosperity involves dissolving the Nation State and creating mechanisms that empowers the peaceful, good faith people, and prevents the Nation State from coming back.
Pmop··on Twitter makes it harder to choose the old reverse-chronological feed
This is funny but on a side note, isn't this exactly what some casinos and some malls/stores do? I once spent one hour in a duty free mall because it was like a maze and I couldn't find the exit.
Pmop··on I live in the country with the most expensive Apple products on the planet
I still think the reason are custom duties (which I think is something immoral), and anything else is just a consequence. Buying an Apple product from elsewhere is more expensive than buying one here. If that wasn't the case, people would just import the products, and the local businesses would have to adjust or risk bankruptcy.
