Phlarp··on Coinbase says hackers bribed staff to steal customer data, demanding $20M ransom
This is a feature of bitcoin not a bug.

If you sling code for cryptocurrency you and your loved ones are "in the game" now.

Phlarp··on LG Chem develops material capable of suppressing thermal runaway in batteries
Generally speaking, thermal runaway is not the lithium reacting directly with water in the air, it's a self oxidizing fire-- The electrolyte fluid is combustable, metal oxides in the anode material release oxygen when heated and a short circuit provides the heat and ignition source.

Phlarp··on US eyes antitrust investigation against Nvidia as market value surpasses $3T
Kind of, all the other advantages they have are a result of being in such a dominant position in the market, which they gained more or less through that superior toolkit (CUDA).
Phlarp··on US eyes antitrust investigation against Nvidia as market value surpasses $3T
Claim eminent domain or BIS over CUDA and allow it to be used on all those other chips.

You fix the anti-trust issues and super charge AI development just by open sourcing CUDA.

Phlarp··on Real estate giant China Evergrande will be liquidated
We said we were 100% collateralized, actually it's only 50% but you can trust us that it really is 50% collateralized this time and we aren't lying again. Transact with trust!

Don't even need that, just an emergency data request sent from a compromised municipal police email account.

Phlarp··on Can flow batteries finally beat lithium?
The amount of cope in this comment is astronomical
Phlarp··on The U.S. Government Has $5B in Bitcoin
This was always the plan. Get the criminals to concentrate the funds into a currency that's easier to confiscate.

Bonus points if the NSA/CIA can steal it to fund black ops.

Phlarp··on Why SaaS prices are still going up when companies are spending less
Greed.
Phlarp··on Seattle becomes first in U.S. to protect gig workers from sudden 'deactivation'
But won't someone think of the shareholders? Surely we can't deprive them of positive financial outcomes over something as silly as a living wage for workers?
Phlarp··on Tarsnap outage postmortem
Don't let the CTO be a scapegoat. Entire executive leadership, all board members and the 5 largest shareholders.
Phlarp··on Tesla exaggerated EV range so much that drivers thought cars were broken
Uber greyball, VW emissions test profilers, Tesla range shenanigans.

Seems we should default to assuming it lies until otherwise proven.

Phlarp··on Electric bike, stupid love of my life
You've clearly never been on a bike path in America! Road cyclists wearing spandex suits are the most universally obnoxious group of assholes you'll meet here. They make Tesla and BMW drivers look polite, and will openly roid range on anybody that doesn't dive out of their way while they ride shoulder to shoulder in the middle of the path.
Phlarp··on Single Fire Hydrant Nets NYC $33,000 a Year

Phlarp··on Single Fire Hydrant Nets NYC $33,000 a Year
Not sure I'm in love with the idea of emergency services spending a bunch of time breaking windows and putting hoses through a car.

Although not in love with fire hydrants as a revenue source either.

Phlarp··on Reddit’s blackout protest is set to continue indefinitely
It's insane because Discord has the usage stats to see that the first thing a majority of users do when joining a new server is to force mute group @ notifications.

I honestly wonder why this is even a feature they support, but it should absolutely be defaulted to mute and/or have a checkbox for it in the new server join banner. They force collect phone numbers while highlighting the fact that they will spam the ever-loving fuck out of your notifications.

Phlarp··on Heavy marijuana use increases schizophrenia in men, study finds
That sounds like "just following orders" with extra steps.
Phlarp··on De-dollarization is happening at a ‘stunning’ pace
One empire can crumble into nothing without another empire immediately taking it's place. Previously the rest of the world tripped over one another to put all their eggs into our basket. Now we are getting sideways looks with a mixture of "You doing OK America?" and quietly diversifying their portfolios.
Phlarp··on XTS-210 25hp rotary engine; 1/5th size/weight of diesel piston engines
Adding in the 2 stroke design and wide ranging fuel compatibility to the above military centric specs, I have to imagine the emissions profile is truly stunning.
Phlarp··on Most of my skills are now worth nothing, but 10% are worth 1000x
I can think of 75 million or so Americans that would vote for it loudly if the right politicians came out in support of the idea.
Phlarp··on DJI Inspire 3: new 8k cinema drone
While I'm sure there are some DJIs being used for recon, my understanding of the situation is that the overwhelming majority of drones used as guidance / delivery systems for munitions are hobbyist style DIY fpv drones. They are less expensive, have significantly higher payload carry capability and can be constructed from more generally available and interchangeable components[1][2][3]

For these types of drones all the consumer and FOSS control links are unencrypted and critically vulnerable to frequency hopping hijacking attacks [4]

The video and control for all of these systems (including DJI) can be disrupted by jamming consumer and hobbyist frequencies; 300-975mhz, 2.4ghz, and 5.8ghz.

As with any information coming from active modern war zones, the incidence of misinformation, disinformation and propaganda will be high.

Phlarp··on Tesla workers shared sensitive images recorded by customer cars
"Snark or flamebait" as determined by tech bros that own the car?

On any given day there are 30 fresh topics getting lambasted by the terminally online nerds that populate this site but the second someone brings up Tesla-- Mods show up to enforce "civility" and pass out bans to anybody with 'wrong' opinions.

Hacker News being pointlessly negative is such a meme that people blackhole links coming from HN just to avoid the "free condescending advice", seems fitting these same reply guys can't handle the lightest of criticisms against their god-king or his ewaste cars.

We get called "the orange site" because name dropping Hacker News on social media causes a swarm of scavengers to attack you like a dead fish hitting the ocean floor.

I understand you have a difficult job making sense of the above + trying to prevent it from getting worse but genuinely this interaction leaves me feeling like getting my main account banned from HN would be a badge of honor.

Phlarp··on DJI Inspire 3: new 8k cinema drone
"The best anti-drone load out" in the context of FPV quadcopters is going to be a radio transmitter configured to overwhelm their video or hijack control through frequency hopping attacks. The marginal cost of taking down the drone is virtually zero, radio jamming provides a continuous wide area of denial without user input and can't be overwhelmed by a swarm of attacking drones like a point defense turret could be.

The RC control channel is unencrypted and the video feed is analog. If I'm being attacked by FPV drones I'll take a freshly certified ham radio operator over a world champion duck hunter any day.

Phlarp··on DJI Inspire 3: new 8k cinema drone
Birdshot is very effective against plastic propellers and soft side lipo batteries, which are both virtually universal critical components on FPV quadcopters.

3 flights actually seems pretty good given the conditions-- I suspect they aren't walking out to fetch any crashed or malfunctioning devices in an active combat zone and the analog video signals are exceptionally easy to interfere with.

Phlarp··on Tesla workers shared sensitive images recorded by customer cars
The things being discussed in these threads are valid criticism. The cars have deep flaws and the corporation has an expectation that exuberant owners will continue to do free marketing and PR for them.

Ban away if you need to but I'll continue to level valid critiques at a tech company selling an $80,000 luxury sedan without a spare tire.

Phlarp··on U.S. and China wage war beneath the waves over internet cables
George Bush was reelected for a second term and didn't leave office until he was unable to run for it again.

He was reelected because of his role in foreign interventions not in spite of them.
