Paianni··on Free Parking Is Killing Cities
The Netherlands had a relatively large cycling population even before they built paths everywhere, the new infrastructure only contributed to a modest increase in numbers over the last four decades. Some new towns in the UK instated very high quality cycle paths in the 1960s, but to this day they are very lightly used.

Overall I think it's a cultural/convenience thing.

Paianni··on Apple Will Not Reinstate Epic’s Fortnite Developer Account
How do Epic's games benefit users in meaningful ways over any of the other non-exploitative games on the App Store?
Paianni··on The Framework is the most exciting laptop I've used
Lots of legacy apps use bit-mapped graphics instead of vectors. Xaw and Motif are both not resolution-independent toolkits but getting them to support integer scaling (with line-doubling) would be far easier than trying to implement fractional scaling plus anti-aliasing.

Apple literally doubled the resolutions of their pre-HiDPI screens for their current screens and then scaled their interface by 2x for the default OS builds, so if their interface is too big for you then it probably has been since Mac OS X came out.

Paianni··on Windows 11: Just say no
Well Vista removed support for kernel-mode printer drivers (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/pr...), Vista introduced the WDDM model for video drivers in user-mode, 8 removed support for XDDM so I guess one could say that by 8, things had come full circle.
Paianni··on Windows 11: Just say no
I hear the era of GDI being run in kernel mode was...not good for stability or security, but I rarely used 2000 and never used NT 4.0 so perhaps there are better mouthpieces than myself.
Paianni··on Windows 11: Just say no
Eh, I don't agree.

NT 3.51 — solid

NT 4.0, 2000 & XP — less, less and less solid

Vista — premature

7 — ok

8 — borked

10 & 11 — untouchable

Paianni··on The rise of user-hostile software
I don't think their S30+ (dumb) phones have that sort of ToS imposed...but then I can't imagine you want to revert to that sort of thing.
Paianni··on The Itanic Has Sunk
Compaq bought DEC and killed Alpha before both got folded into HP.

Paianni··on The Lightness of Windows
IE6 was actually a perfectly fine browser at launch, the trouble was that it stayed current for so long that getting IT infrastructure to abandon it took far longer than it should have. XP and Server 2003 had a similar predicament.
Paianni··on Just Use Email – How to Use Email for Everything
With Fastmail I get a lot of messages purporting to be from Fastmail threatening account termination/verification, something along those lines. Most of them are automatically sent to spam.

Paianni··on Google isn’t happy with Microsoft over online news
Microsoft hasn't owned any part of MSNBC since 2012.
Paianni··on Great Britain road numbering scheme
It's an okay system but apathy has resulted in abnormalities, such as the A5-M1 Link Road leaving a bunch of routes in Dunstable out of zone. The A14, as conceived in the 90s, has always started out of zone because that was the easiest two-digit number to steal from another route. Many old A-roads have been chopped into pieces because of motorway replacements or to encourage heavy traffic to use more suitable routes, the end result is a bit of a mess nowadays.
Paianni··on Sega Dreamcast: Windows CE
It would also have cut into profit margins or sales even more than the modem, the market wasn't ready for online gaming in 1999.
Paianni··on AirPods Max
This product will do about as well as the iPod Hi-Fi I reckon.

Maybe it's just me but I don't like hanging things on my arms, it's uncomfortable and distracting.
Paianni··on Less screen time and more sleep critical for preventing depression
I'm pretty close to selling off all my smartphones for this reason, it's the only way I can remove the temptation.

Paianni··on Review: A Counterfeit, $100 iPhone X
If social status is that important to someone then I think a second-hand genuine iPhone in decent nick would send a better message than a fake new one. Maybe even an old 6000 series Nokia. Like the person is more authentic and looks after their things, and only buys what they need. I could be wrong.
Paianni··on Philipp Hagemeister, former YouTube-dl maintainer re: takedown
"effective technological measures"

That's the grey area.

Paianni··on YouTube-dl has received a DMCA takedown from RIAA
Unless the RIAA is actually going to take the owner of youtube-dl's domain to court, there's nothing (for now) stopping yt-dl from setting up another development platform of some sort. DMCA takedowns are cause for concern but they're not quite the be all and end all of a dispute.
Paianni··on My Eight-Year Quest to Digitize 45 Videotapes
Personally I'll wait for raw RF capture (VHS-Decode) to become convenient.
Paianni··on The benefits of note-taking by hand
My typing is much faster than my handwriting, so if I am able to type I always opt for that. Slide changes when my notes for them are unfinished are really annoying.

Paianni··on Disrespectful Design – Users aren’t stupid or lazy
I would think using Office 2003 on an internet-connected machine would be a bit of a liability these days...
Paianni··on Russia’s ‘slow-motion Chernobyl’ at sea
In the context of the current geopolitical climate, Russia would be third-world? Second-world would be for "communist" countries like the PRC.
Paianni··on The Hacker Way: How I taught my nephew to program
I don't practise programming because, so far, I've found more valuable and enjoyable things to spend my time on, and my computers do what I want of them for the most part. I know anything I would be interested in programming would involve a steep learning curve (many layers of existing software to wrap my head around), so it's on the back burner for now.
