Third party tools like 0patch help. Obviously so do practices like sensible firewall settings and not opening attachments you don't trust.

I have the latest version of Office installed for when it's needed, I simply prefer doing my serious Word work in '03.

I don't think I'd hold up any version of Office as the paradigm of "internet safe" software.
