Oxodao··on Google breaks promise to provide 10 years of updates to Chromebooks
I even wouldn't. They're missing the meta key which is a pain, especially as an i3 user
Oxodao··on The smart home graveyard is getting crowded
Great to know but that will result in double NAT. Tbf my ISP (Free / iliad) is quite good and pretty friendly so I probably wont have issues (i've never had to call them in like 6-8 years)
Oxodao··on The smart home graveyard is getting crowded
Even with local API I'm quite a bit hesitant, I'd rather not use anything that does not let me install an opensource firmware (e.g. wled for RGBCCT led strip controller).

I haven't made a vlan yet for IoT stuff because my ISP's router do not let me, I can't wait to have my own openwrt / opnsense router and put the ISP in bridge mode.

> Not making a fragile computer a single point of failure

You can set it up in a way that it does work without it but can be enhanced with it. Some zigbee switch work like that (Like the Aqara one).

Also, Home Assistant is the most rock-solid piece of software I ran in a long time, it just never breaks for me

Oxodao··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
Oh yeah I could absoluetly, but I just moved on gnome already lost me so I see no point to since I'm now used to another software and I won't come back
Oxodao··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
oh yeah I forgot about this but I absolutely have a grip with this.

Though I'm not 100% in line with this because in i3 I have no taskbar but it's perfect for serious work because:

1. Each app / type of app I use has its own workspace

2. The indicator of workspace only shows those which have a window on it, even if they always exist

That pretty much replicates the taskbar experience but with the added benefits that I choose exactly how I "group" those windows

Oxodao··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
No but I never claimed that the shell itself was the main issue (though the app drawer is definetly part of it). It's the gnome ecosystem in general that took this approach. Of course I can use a different app each time one changes the way they do stuff but that's the point I shouldn't have to learn a new app because an update broke what I used to use
Oxodao··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
Yeah of course i've got no problem that people use it, but the devs have started to take a vert opiniated approach that is not aligned with my vision. It's just unfortunate that an update can break all my habits
Oxodao··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
That was my point to be fair, it's not the gnome DE in itself the main issue it's the ecosystem. You wouldn't tell most windows or osx user to replace explorer or finder, and yes that can be a solution just like changing the whole DE can. Software update should not get me this passionate about it or it's clearly that something's wrong
Oxodao··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
Note : I come from GNOME 2 so maybe that's why I despise it because of the complete redesign they made. The app drawer is just not made for computer they just saw windows 8 ui and decided to go with it too

GTK4 decided to drop the ability to theme any apps (or are seriously going this way if its not already in place) but that's my computer and the lack of customization is litterally one of the main reason i left windows 15 years ago.

Renaming the apps to something totally generic is also weird like i want to install eye-of-gnome now called "photos" i have no clue what the package name is, same for engrampa or the file explorer.

The new design guideline is not to my taste but that's not the point here.

But it's a lot of small stuff like you copy / extract a file then no more window just a small indicator in the corner of the file explorer which cannot stay on screen so i can track the progress easily, and what happen if I close the explorer ? Does it continue in the background or stop because everything is closed i'll never know.

I also had a grip with the picture viewer which forced me to stay on eog until I finally took the dip and went to eye-of-mate but I don't remember it, just that it was enough for me to stop using it

To be fair my experience is more or less a year old since I've not used GTK software in a while but that's just a few exemple on how it clearly isn't as good as it used to be.

Oxodao··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
Yeah and when change do occur, its for the worse (e.g. Gnome)

> Why bother to learn a new UI, when all that does is get you back to square 1, and it might not even stick around

Exactly. That's why I gave up and stay on i3 and the common tools I use. I've been for a few month under hyprland and yeah no I'll go back to X11+i3 the pain it provides is just not worth it even if the common user would think they're pretty similar.

I'm already upset that I have to use Windows at work because I've not used it in years and I have to relearn everything again (like every time you want to change some settings it appears that Microsoft has moved them?) that I don't have the free time to spend to do the same on Linux. I just want my computer to work and to work the same unless I specifically decide to change it, not because some update thought it would be cool to move things around

That sentiment is probably what it means to growing older though

Oxodao··on Looking forward to Git 2.56 – and 3.0

> is unable to silently alter the firewall's configuration

I'd like more informations about this as I'm not too familiar with firewall setup but every time I tried to setup iptables / nft it was indeed bypassed by docker. Recently I found out in the docs that docker adds a DOCKER-USER table, isn't it enough to put your rules in it to prevent the outside world to reach containers ?

Oxodao··on Pirate Face Rescues LLM Models from Deletion
IIRC Mistral used to do it, not sure if that's still the case

EDIT/ Yes they did, that no longer seems to be the case though

Oxodao··on One Year of Sponsored Servo Development
yeah in a perfect world google dictates how the standard will evolve, we kill all competition so we're sure that you have only one target to build your software against, I'm sure a monopoly will greatly improves innovation and not be used to stiffen competition. /s
Oxodao··on Backups Aren't Simple
sync is not backup

Also why you sync through LAN only?

Oxodao··on The Kuycon P20 – 28" 4500x3000px 3:2 monitor
I really need a 3:2 desktop monitor but it's just impossible. AFAIK there's only the BenQ one (well it seems that now there's two) and it's out of my budget. I would have no problem settling with a 1080p one but there's just no manufacturers :(

Coding is so much nicer on those. I have a Huawei Matebook 14 from a few years ago, and at my previous work I had a Framework, this ratio is just night and day it's so much better

Oxodao··on Suddenly I'm a Go Developer
Pointless article. That's the same article we've seen thousand of times by now "look, I told the random number generator to write text and it did". There's not even a reflection or anything that's litterally it. No you are not a Go Developer, reaching this point of knownledge could have been done in like an hour by reading tutorials and docs. Even if you think you want to use AI to gain time on developing, learning a language is NOT something you want to gain time on.
Oxodao··on KDE's new Photos app offers a sleek alternative to Gwenview
eye-of-gnome was nearly perfect. But the "modernization" (e.g. GTK4 and some small ux changes) made me un-usable for me. I settled on eye-of-mate but there's still a few things I'd rather change (e.g. with zoomed-in pictures you can't use left/right arrow to go to the next one in the folder because now it move the viewport of the zoomed picture).

It's really unfortunate that those UX changes are not behind flags (I would have no issue with those being turned on by default which I could revert back easily)

EDIT/ But to be fair its more related at everything related to GTK4 for me, All the GTK3-era app were amazing, now I can't stand any of them and it pretty much made me switch to QT equivalent for most of them

Oxodao··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
This app is just garbage. Can't even use it if you are rooted.
Oxodao··on Migrating a Synology NAS to a UniFi UNAS Pro 8 with Robocopy, SMB Multichannel
TrueNAS, I have really mixed feelings about it. It's ok but the company behinds it start to do not great stuff
Oxodao··on SteamdDB Joins Nexus Mods
I'm so thankful that Minecraft has developed it's own ecosystem for modding (I don't like CurseForge but it's MILES ahead of NM, and modrinth is great) and did not rely on NexusMods. Try to install a big modpack in TES, Fallout or Cyberpunk without actually paying for the API access, it's borderline insane.
Oxodao··on Migrating a Synology NAS to a UniFi UNAS Pro 8 with Robocopy, SMB Multichannel
I recently migrated from a synology to a diy nas, 8to to transfer, did it through rsync, took a few days but it ended up working nice.
Oxodao··on Why Microsoft Entertainment Pack had a sticker announcing that it had Tetris?
And it seems to store that info locally as even typing the url manually after being redirected from here you still get the eggcup. Using the link in private mode does work though, probably need to clear the local storage
Oxodao··on What I love about Django
I've used django-orm at my previous job for 2 years and I never have liked it, the syntax is just not nice to read. I used Doctrine for 5 years (2 before last job and 3 since I got my current one) and it's just night and day. Declaring entity is just way cleaner, you can just skim through an EntityRepository / query and understand easily what it does
Oxodao··on What I love about Django
In Doctrine the query builder can take objects that describe what you want to do [1], not the best but still way better to read and understand. There's also the DQL which is an SQL-like language that's pretty well integrated in phpstorm and is quite close to SQL [2]

[1] https://www.doctrine-project.org/projects/doctrine-collectio... (for collections but you can use them for queries too)

[2] https://www.doctrine-project.org/projects/doctrine-orm/en/3.... / https://www.doctrine-project.org/projects/doctrine-orm/en/3....

Oxodao··on What I love about Django
I despise django-orm, doctrine is so much better. Like, who thought that using named arguments to do stuff was a proper way ??? `.filter(created_at__gte=XXXXX)` why? The rest of the framework is great but the ORM is definetly its weakest point.
Oxodao··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
I agree that live service are the main threat, but even so you should not have to rely on pirated software to keep using something you paid for. Also not all game ends up being cracked
