Love Diaspora, but it is really more of a philosophical thought experiment that drops you into two worlds rather than a novel with a plot. Half the book is geometry!
OvidNaso··on How Not to Explain Success
But there is one other factor more important than any and muddles everything..the desire to accumulate wealth.

How dose one enable it? I only get the "something went wrong" page when visiting the site and all the help docs only reference an HTML5 embedded player.
OvidNaso··on Boaty McBoatface and the False Promise of Democracy
All of those viewpoints you alude to are extremely fringe movements and are in no way populist.

>I've finally come to terms with the idea that, if there is an omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent power, it's the universe as a whole, but since you can't take any part of existence and remove the part that isn't divine (that is, you can't identify the part that is divine, and by exclusion, you can't differentiate the part that isn't divine), then God in the normal sense doesn't "exist".

>So is there a God? I don't think so, but if there IS a God, its existence can't be proven one way or another, so for all intents and purposes, it can be assumed to not exist.

Would't the same reasoning apply to conscience?

OvidNaso··on EPUB 3.1 Standard Update
Recent versions of mupdf support epub. I currently use zathura which is great for pdf's and it does an decent job with epub's.

"Physical dependence" with respect to addiction really is nothing. Substances that create physical withdrawal symptoms can certainly be very very unpleasant (even dangerous), but if they were at all the main factor in addiction, drug abuse treatment would be a glorious, happy, incredibly successful industry.

Think about it: Even the worst "physically addictive" substances, let's say heroin, will be completely clear from physically in 7-10 days. Two weeks tops. Anybody can put up with that and, in fact, many addicts do it all the time. If that was the differentiating factor, locking up an addict would work because they would come to their "senses" after no longer physically dependent. Obviously, that's not how it is. Real addiction is something much deeper and cognitively still mysterious. Physical withdrawal (those first two weeks of hell) is called, in the treatment community, the easy part.

I think when most people use the "physical dependence" reference like you did, they are really trying to categorize and emphasize (internally or externally) that among substances and behaviors that are addictive, certain ones more often consume a persons entire being. This process is still a complete mystery and even if people can't or won't accept the amazing power and bizarre scope of cognitive function...it is certainly not 'physical dependence' and I therefore don't think there is any real need to continue with that minor classification.

OvidNaso··on UCLA has published a powerful new image-detection algorithm
That is interesting, but really only the first point is outside the scope of issues that would be addressed or rectified if the academic community as a whole were to embrace an open culture.
OvidNaso··on Wasavi – a browser extension that transforms TEXTAREA elements into a VI editor
I use pentadactyl with firefox which allows me to <C-i> in a text area which launches emacsclient (running in daemon mode) and sends the text back when I save. no mouse! Here is a short video of how it works: https://youtu.be/_ZoABZ8muy0 (huge gif http://imgur.com/iXMeZDj)

What are these people supposed to do? Your solutions sounds like certain cities solution to the homeless problem...kick them out of the city. I'm pround of the other members of your group. The mentally ill and socially inept should be shown kindness and we should lead by example. Not just kick everyone out that makes us uncomfortable.
OvidNaso··on How the CIA Helped Produce 'Zero Dark Thirty'
Check out the documentary 0.Casino Jack and the United Stats of Money read up on jack Abramoff. It certainly appears that he was living in a fantasy world created from pulp cold war fiction novels and he was not alone.

OvidNaso··on Codes of Misconduct
>In every culture in the world, a man putting his hand on another's shoulder is a gesture of dominance,

What an example of cultural confusion on display. Because this sounds absurd to me. Here, a hand on the shoulder, is a clear sign of friendship and would be relieve tension in a situation.

OvidNaso··on Julian Assange 'disappointed' as sex assault case dropped
But in a case of property dispute, this contradicts what you said about the mind of the victim not mattering. If I am in your house and believe that the playstation is mine and walk out with it. Weather or not it is a crime is entirely dependent on what you believe about ownership of the playstation. Entirely on "whether or not the victim feels they were wronged".
OvidNaso··on What the Next Generation Needs Is Math, Not Programming
If you want to extend even furthur into the metaphysics, it was Wolfram's "New Kind of Science" which (certainly not first) proposes that it's the computational universe that comes first given rise to the mathematical realism one.

I just read that sentence...am I now obliged?

OvidNaso··on How America Overdosed on Drug Courts
Colorado and Washington are already blowing it. They are taking tax revenue from the sale of marijuana and using it as regular tax revenue for programs such as schools. Just look at the insidious relationship government has with the lottery to see that we are just shackling ourselves to a whole other host of compromised interests. Once they get that money regularly, they are never giving it back with out a (corrupt) fight which means any means to use the revenue from drug sales can never be used for appropriate or creative means to further solve the drug problem and we will quickly find ourselves in the absurd situation where our elementary schools will be active drug pushers (see the recent John Oliver piece that highlights a New York Public School ad pushing gambling and the lottery as some noble activity).

It's the one major social issue that can completely fund, to the full extent of current science, the research and treatment of it's ill effects on society...and we are throwing the opportunity away that will be extraordinarily, if not impossible, to get back.

OvidNaso··on How the language you speak changes your view of the world
Along these lines, I've often thought about the cognitive paths that could be explored or changed if I were to learn braille or sign language. Neuroscience has recently studied and given legitimacy to the state of 'Flow' or 'the Zone'[0] which has been long been understood in the physical realm, but is probably the same or similar in states of other creative activities, like speech or writing. I wonder if it may be easier to induce if one knew American (or any dialect) sign-language. Could we more readily produce eloquence or insight with the forced physicality athletes and meditation guru's use? And how much beautiful poetry and prose are we missing produced by the deaf community?

You really want the surgeon who is only doing his best due to fear to be operating on you?

None of those listed professions at any time motivate their training due to fear of imprisionment. It is a complete non factor and it's only effect is to shovel more pain and tragedy on already tragic situations to the illusion of relief for a small porportion of the parties aggrevied.

OvidNaso··on John Resig annotates original jQuery source code
Isn't this sort of the original intent and purpose of Literate programming. I just spent a bunch of my time creating my emacs configuartion in org-mode using babel [0] and man, it was a cool experience. You can comment out the wazoo, linking to the web, other files or other parts of the same file all organized in a custom hierarchy or whatever you choose.

Then just C-c C-v t and all the source code is in a clean seperate file. You can even set it up to include the comments, link to the comments, or whatever other way you want the output to be. If I ever pursue programming more seriously, I can't image not seriously trying to do it in this manner.

OvidNaso··on Arch Linux – Do it yourself
Unfortunately, I've also had a few problems with Manjaro. I still think it is great and would recommend it, but it certainly is a 'plan to move on' distribution for me. I think I'm going to try Antergos next. I'm not quite ready for the Arch install. If I had a laptop with an Internet connection next to me, I'd probably have a go, but being a single comp desktop...will try Antergos for a few months.

OvidNaso··on Show HN: The Daily Drop – Discover the Newest EDM Tracks
Man, none of the sites in this thread work on linux without flash (Manjaro; Firefox 36.0). I was super excited looking at the players...just wish I could hear the music. The only option I've discovered to work so far to discover EDM wrt taste:(time for discovery) is Digitially Imported Preimum that works perfectly with Clementine (or any player for that matter).
OvidNaso··on Privacy is at a crossroads. Choose wisely
But this is the case in many social issues that are eventually "won". Only a couple of years ago the vast majority of people in the US firmly believed marijuana should remain illegal and that number has dropped enough to change many state laws. How about gay, women or minority rights. All of them were strongly opposed by the masses.

OvidNaso··on What Heroin Addiction Tells Us About Changing Bad Habits
"If flying across the world/country and making other drastic changes really does stop the cycle with a high rate of success, we should consider funding it."

In addiction circles this behavior is comingly attempted, and considered so unsuccessful, that it has a *A-ism, "Doing a geographic".
