Out_of_Characte··on Room temperature, ambient pressure superconductivity – this time for real?
Superconductors can make very powerfull lossless conductors, and therefore powerfull magnetic fields. Which is great if you need to contain a fusion reaction. Also not needing to cool one side to near 0k and the hot side to millions of degrees helps viability of fusion.

Processors basacally convert almost all power into heat by resistive losses. With room temparature superconductors you'll only consume energy on the state changes of the processor.

With this superconductive material you could create loops of wire (like a resistor) but instead it would store energy practically lossless in a few seconds.

Superconductivity up to 100c and 1bar would be a historic moment in human ingenuity.

The Netherlands arent changing their drug policy. We just have the problem of being an import/export country for not just goods but also drugs for the entirety of europe. Drug consumption by citizens is not changing.

Stuff like this makes me feel like the base10 system might eventually get replaced by an even more usefull counting system.
Out_of_Characte··on Slim people have a genetic advantage when it comes to maintaining their weight
Isn't this stating the obvious? It also does not solve the problem or explains why people have gotten obese over the last few years.
Out_of_Characte··on FDA approves first gene therapy treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy
So far, most age related medicine only come in two forms, those that reduce cell division which improves longevity, and those that increase cell division which improves youthfullness and cancer. Telomeres seem to be a natural counter to reduce aging cells from becoming cancer.

Because an implosion is a single point of failure leading to instant death. Anything else can be salvaged by staying calm and using one of multiple ways to resurface.
Out_of_Characte··on Finland's plan to bury spent nuclear fuel for 100k years
Yeah, you could reprocess spent fuel but one of the byproducts would be plutonium. So we'd rather bury everything than using the plutonium for other projects because of fear that we can't handle nuclear byproducts.

There probaly would be, the displacement might be the same but the distribution of mass wouldn't. But I recon these instruments are only sensitive enough to measure the difference between the seafloor and the water above.
Out_of_Characte··on Deep-brain stimulation during sleep strengthens memory: study
It was stated that the treatment group did the assigmment twice, the first evening without, the second evening with electrical stimulation. Without evidence to the contrary, the memory improvement could be due to consolidation of the stimulus received instead of 'new' memories being stored better.

Although, with flash memory cells nearing their physical limits in lithography, pretty soon you'll need active cooling for bigger stacks.
Out_of_Characte··on US banking crisis: Warren Buffett says bosses should face ‘punishment’
Risk management has far more depth and consequences than you realise. For example, by far the safest form of investment would be 10yr T-bills held to maturity. Which is what SVB had. The Fed made their paper value worthless because of the high interest rate they set. If they were greedy and opted for highest yield then there would have been a good chance that they stuck around longer.

Problem is that I'm not sure wether to blame the fed or the banks.

No, IV 'only' has 100% bioavailability. This does not reflect potency.

75ug would definitely be 'noticeable' if you took it sublingual. But this was an IV so I wouldnt know how much dilution there would be before passing the blood brain barrier. My best guess is that it would lower effective dose and how strong thr initial onset was.
Out_of_Characte··on Urban Density and Home Prices
Yes, the main benefit of trains and proper buses is that you wont get stuck in traffic. So in the worst case scenario you'll see troughput increases as a function of ridership (more occupancy, more trains) while trying to battle overcrowding. By adding more trains and buses. Trains have another benefit to the population that they can travel at higher speed, so the induced demand with trains can get even higher because of the large distance you can travel if you travel at 200+ kmph.

Induced demand isn't actually a bad thing unless your transportation gets less efficient the more people use them. Which is definitely the case with cars. Just look at the amount of parking spaces needed to cope with peak hours. This can all be avoided if trains and buses are a viable and comfortable option for people.

Just think about the average car ridership only having 1.2 passengers. While a bus that takes up three parking spaces can have 50-100 people. Or a train that could hold up to 1500 passengers.

Out_of_Characte··on Urban Density and Home Prices
This article does not make sense to me. City's main point of attractiveness is high density. When you have a place with lots of resources ( usually near rivers ) people will move there. The more people, the more business which means if there's any place for any nice market then hitting the biggest cities first is a good bet. Yes, this means the more houses you build in an area, the more people will move there which will increase the attractiveness of a city. Attractiveness can be represented as value. This, in no way means you should stop building houses in places that are the most attractive. Quite the opposite. Build until the price drops or the cost of even higher density outstrips the benefit that could be gained. Eventually too many people will be priced out. You might not like the idea that only the very rich can occupy the highest value spot in a city but thats just free market.

"They added two more lanes to the freeway, but the traffic is worse than ever.” But that’s a wonderful result"

No, its not. Thoughput is a function of speed * vehicles. Having a 6 lane highway at a crawl is as effective as a single lane highway at decent speed. Induced demand is complicated to grasp but the core is that highways are terrible at moving lots of people and any additional highway will make more people drive to match the highway's new capacity. A neverending traffic loop. Trains, trams, buses and cyclepaths all move more people which should be prioritised. Many countries atleast have priority for buses which makes them a better option. Most american cities treat them like another car but with lower status.

Out_of_Characte··on Building telescopes on the Moon could transform astronomy
Dark matter has a very simple and literal explanation, matter affected by gravity (thus below the speed of light) that we arent able to detect. This could be almost entirely mundane things like planets of asteroids that are impossible to see at lightyears if they dont pass in front of a star.

Dark energy is the odd one that is part observation, part speculation

Out_of_Characte··on ATC staff shortages: 11,000 flights cut from NYC and DCA in summer 2023
I'm not sure how feasable AI or automation is. How would you respond to a failure in the automated system once there are more planes in the air than ATC controllers in that area? That could be a single point of failure. ATC Can optimise for severe degradation of service but how would automation be able to respond to a sometimes unavoidable impossible situation?

You can define rules how planes should and shouldn't fly, verifying that this is always possible would be a nightmare.

Out_of_Characte··on Previously unknown isotope of uranium discovered
I was just thinking that theres another way to store short half lives or other perishables, just create a miniature black hole, it will fall for infinity but you could retrieve the item once you stop feeding the black hole energy and it'll evaporate by hawking radiation in microseconds.

Ive been watching too much doctor who and now I want a thermoscan based on black holes for my tea

Out_of_Characte··on Night of the living brain fog dead or how I hacked myself better via open source
I can come up with examples but know its ironic to try to proof treatments that are, scientifically or medically, not verified.

Theres diet, sleep, exercise. Which require no studies to know that taking better care of yourself will help you regardless of the pathology.

Then there's the somewhat strange case of orthodontist John Mew, who advocates for setting your tongue posture to the roof of your mouth in order to close the jaw properly, to prevent standard treatment of various braces, teeth alignment issues and corrective jaw surgery.

Other strange therapies that I've come across that seem unhealthy but have some backing are intentional sleep deprivation to improve depressive symptoms. prolonged fasting to reduce scar tissue. Or one I personally use alot, extremely cold showers after allergene exposure.

There are alot of silly things the human body can do that at first glance might seem irresponsible or dangerous but are about as dangerous as people in the 1900's might imagine airplanes would be.

One more thing I might add, standard care does not mean 'in your best interest' some standard practise might be too cruel to accept, like chemotherapy. Even though its proven to extend your life, it might not be proven to be in your best interest.

Out_of_Characte··on Previously unknown isotope of uranium discovered
You dont have to use anything complicated, just accelerate it to the speed of light and the half life will stay the same but we would observe it for significantly longer.
Out_of_Characte··on Night of the living brain fog dead or how I hacked myself better via open source
On the flipside, there are also a small selection of unproven treatments that work better than standard care.
Out_of_Characte··on A $1.5T Wall of Debt Is Looming for US Commercial Properties
If the american economy is so great, then how do you explain the inflation we see right now? Its the highest since 1970 I believe.

Edit, 1976

Out_of_Characte··on A $1.5T Wall of Debt Is Looming for US Commercial Properties
You risk hyperinflation if new debt is covered by extreme price inflation. Which is what we still have. Demand or supply does not matter, stock prices do not matter, M2 money supply does not matter, they are all signals but the core is that cpi inflation must reach 2-3% before even considering reducing interest rate.
