OrganicMSG··on If You’ve Met Aliens While on DMT, These Scientists Would Like to Hear from You
There are potential mechanisms;

> Human cryptochrome exhibits light-dependent magnetosensitivity

> "Humans are not believed to have a magnetic sense, even though many animals use the Earth's magnetic field for orientation and navigation. One model of magnetosensing in animals proposes that geomagnetic fields are perceived by light-sensitive chemical reactions involving the flavoprotein cryptochrome (CRY). Here we show using a transgenic approach that human CRY2, which is heavily expressed in the retina, can function as a magnetosensor in the magnetoreception system of Drosophila and that it does so in a light-dependent manner. The results show that human CRY2 has the molecular capability to function as a light-sensitive magnetosensor and reopen an area of sensory biology that is ready for further exploration in humans."

And I have heard of studies getting some effect by looking at people's orientation when lost, with and without big magnets strapped to their head, though I don't seem to be able to find it just now.

OrganicMSG··on If You’ve Met Aliens While on DMT, These Scientists Would Like to Hear from You
I saw them a few days after taking DMT. I was sitting on a sofa, reality paused, some tube-limbed harlequins stepped out sideways into it, cut a few things up, looked inside them then put them back together, then they fucked off and reality restarted.
OrganicMSG··on Judge rules California coffee shops must display cancer warnings
I've seen a magnetic tack hammer with a varnished wooden handle that had one of those stickers on it here in the UK. Was wondering if it was in case you chewed the varnish.

Perhaps someone should just put a label on the roadsigns as you enter the State of California saying, "May contain nuts".

OrganicMSG··on Gravitational attraction of stars and cows
They gravitationally repel cows very slightly, which is why cows tend to stay on land.
OrganicMSG··on Analysts argue that over-automation is to blame for Tesla problems
> But while all that exotic capital might allow Tesla to remove 5 workers, it will then need to hire a skilled engineer to manage, programme and maintain robots for $100 an hour (our estimate of a robotic engineers’ hourly rate).

These analysts, what are they analysts in?

OrganicMSG··on Boeing hit by WannaCry virus – could cripple some jet production
>The question then becomes: why the hell do the aircraft production systems run windows?

Boeing use CATIA and Dassault Systèmes dropped non-windows client support for CATIA in 2008.

OrganicMSG··on Boeing hit by WannaCry virus – could cripple some jet production
If they are non-safety critical, you could use TempleOS and it still doesn't sound all that frightening.
OrganicMSG··on Bricklayers Think They’re Safe from Robots
I was thinking that the crane robot would run along the wall behind the laying robot and fetch bricks from robot hovercraft that move pallets of bricks.
OrganicMSG··on OpenBazaar 2.0, powered by IPFS
>The world needs a protocol and network for trade that no one company or government controls.

Strictly speaking, that is marketing hyperbole on their part as the world already has a lot of protocols and networks for trade that no one company or government controls, otherwise stuff like international mail would have problems.

OrganicMSG··on VPN leaks users’ IPs via WebRTC
I can see where you are coming from, I just think obvious profitability is a poor heuristic for trust, not only due to altruism, but also because some people like showing off, some people are pure hobbyists, some people are trying to make art and many people are just downright weird, though not necessarily in a way that is going to really do much damage.

It isn't always as simple as looking for an obvious motive, though I would agree to always keep an eye out for where the money comes from and if there is a game and if you are a mark. However that should apply whether or not something looks profitable on the surface, otherwise you drop all cynicism the moment someone tells you the right story.

> A medical emergency requiring an ER and an ambulance can easily cost as much or more than an ordinary person will earn in their whole lifetime.

The majority of hospitals with E.R. in the US are non-profits that receive federal subsidies to help them exist.

OrganicMSG··on VPN leaks users’ IPs via WebRTC
A decent emergency medical response service is never profitable.

It requires a vast amount of hospitals to ensure that there is one local enough to wherever you get ill or injured and they all have to be staffed by lots of different highly qualified specialists who are in as regular practice as possible.

If you were going to require that they be profitable, there simply are not enough rich people for the doctors to work on in order to stay in good practice, or to pay for enough suitably equipped hospitals to ensure a short travel time in an emergency.

OrganicMSG··on Bricklayers Think They’re Safe from Robots
Ideally you want a small robot that climbs the wall it builds with a crane follower being fed by brick fetching robots on the ground. If it was done properly you could fit it all on a flatbed and have it cheap enough to be bought by standard building crews.
OrganicMSG··on What if China corners the cobalt market?
These thing can happen by accident also. If it is generally known that there are only a few places in the world that you get lithium from, then investors are going to think that lithium is very risky and may run out. They don't tend to think, "Hey, it is the third lightest element, in theory there should be loads of it, perhaps we are only mining the cheapest possible sources", which is the actual truth of the matter. So while the people inside the industry might know the potential availability, investors on the whole do not and so the market only gets enough money to expand conservatively, rather than enough to kick off a magnitude more resource acquisition at a significantly higher raw material cost.
OrganicMSG··on What if China corners the cobalt market?
Yep, but it is a useful concept with certain minerals and products. For instance, the vast majority of the cost of producing a lithium battery is the big oven to dry them out before sealing them, the price of the lithium itself is way down the list and could effectively double before it massively affected battery costs. However if the price does double, suddenly lithium is economically available pretty much everywhere.
OrganicMSG··on Monero Is Less Untraceable Than It Seems
I have often wondered about the sanity of people who are using a blockchain based currency across tor. Admittedly, I haven't fully checked my assumptions here, but my initial thoughts on the matter have always been that I'd be amazed if it was a good idea from a security perspective.
OrganicMSG··on Newly-discovered human organ may help explain how cancer spreads
I wonder how many organs are left to find. Was only recently they added the mesentery to the list.
OrganicMSG··on Indian Prime Minister accused of spying on citizens using official app
>If you walk into a store you are typically followed around by the store staff who are always there to help you in case you aren't able to find something you are looking for. Technically this is a "form of spying". But we do not protest.

Two things. Firstly, it is an entirely fatuous argument to try and claim that overly attentive shop assistants are somewhere in the same ballpark as modern digital analytics. They are not even playing the same sport.

Secondly, please do not consider getting a job as a shop assistant here in the UK, as overly attentive shop assistants are one of the few things that we actually do protest bitterly about, almost to the same degree as inaccurate weather reports, or people not properly understanding queuing.

OrganicMSG··on Zuckerberg hits users with the hard truth: You agreed to this
They supposedly have a ghost profile on me, given I have never had an account. I find that quite sketchy.
OrganicMSG··on Zuckerberg hits users with the hard truth: You agreed to this
That's funny, as I'd say that;

>"Contact uploading is optional. People are expressly asked if they want to give permission to upload their contacts from their phone – it’s explained right there in the apps when you get started."

doesn't really cover the complaint from Dylan McKay regarding;

> "metadata about every text message I've ever received or sent"

and;

> "the metadata of every cellular call I've ever made, including time and duration"

OrganicMSG··on Indian Prime Minister accused of spying on citizens using official app
>If tracking the activity of an app's users would amount to spying, then I guess entire fleet of third-party SaaS services would need to go

If you were to explain this current behaviour to people from around 25 years or so ago, the vast majority of them would view what is these days euphemistically described as analytics, as definitely being a form of spying. The fact that it has been turned into a large commercial industry does not change what the behaviour actually is. That the NKVD was a routine part of Soviet society didn't excuse them and the same reasoning will not excuse modern marketing culture either.

OrganicMSG··on Facebook's Zuckerberg will not appear before British MPs
>It's that people are working out what it is they've agreed to to use the service

If the vast majority of users are only working out what they have signed up for now, after using the service for years, then it would be hard to argue that Facebook's users have given informed consent to a contract, which is generally a legal requirement here for it to be said that you have agreed to something.

OrganicMSG··on Facebook's Zuckerberg will not appear before British MPs
I wonder if this will affect their tax arrangements, as they have been treated rather nicely up till now.

In 2014, Facebook paid £4,327 in tax to the UK. The next year, they paid £4.16 million, which seems to be an improvement but then in the same year they were given an £11 million tax credit, so not so much.

OrganicMSG··on Uber disabled Volvo SUV's safety system before fatality
>having a second system running that can't coordinate with the self-driving system would likely make the combined system less safe. Even if communication between the two were possible, I'd still imagine that just having a single system operating the care would be much more desirable.

Multiple redundant systems that do not need to talk to each other to coordinate is generally safest.

And if the existing systems can not be coordinated with and can make cars less safe because of this, then how are drivers managing it?

OrganicMSG··on US Military Scientists Generate Voices Remotely via Laser
If someone is religious enough to attribute a voice with a god and obey it, just because they can't identify the source of the voice, surely they are just as likely to think it is a demon and disobey it?
OrganicMSG··on The Bitter Truth of Learning: It’s Tough, Unpleasant, and Often Pointless
In terms of health and longevity, I suspect the vast majority of the benefit is in just not being sedentary and not eating all of the cake. Nearly all of the very old people I know have had the habit of taking long walks, but I cannot think of any who were athletes.
OrganicMSG··on The Bitter Truth of Learning: It’s Tough, Unpleasant, and Often Pointless
Probably until about 6 months before your knees finally give out. Have you considered eating cake on the beach instead? It will probably only shorten your life by around the same amount of time that you spend running.

Nonsense, is just the AI enhanced propaganda that is making you think that.
