OmahaBoy69··on M4 MacBook Pro
The 2015 keeps going!

I was considering upgrading to an M3 up until about a month ago when Apple replaced my battery, keyboard, top case, and trackpad completely for free. An upgrade would be nice as it no longer supports the latest MacOS, but at this point, I may just load Ubuntu on the thing and keep using it for another few years. What a machine.

OmahaBoy69··on Real ID was a real mistake and Congress should scrap it at last
You got me curious as to which states require ID to pick up prescription narcotics as I've never heard of this living in Illinois and Colorado. Turns out each state has its own set of unique and sometimes bizarre rules:

Where in Boulder are you finding needles? I'm yet to see one after ~4 years here, but I've mostly stuck around CU campus and Pearl and the surrounding areas. Plenty of discarded vapes everywhere, though.
OmahaBoy69··on Show HN: DivestOS – Long-term support for end-of-life Android devices
Yup, got burned by this. I had a POCO X3 (4G LTE but no VoLTE) which I'd still be using today had AT&T not labeled it as a 3G phone. Even just attempting to use it with my SIM card now automatically deactivates my plan.

Now they have a phone whitelist restricted to (mostly) mainstream brands...

OmahaBoy69··on PayPal restores to its TOS $2,500 charge for any post they don't like
>What niche does it support that direct payments don't?

For buying stuff online it removes the need to fiddle around with CCs (+ trusting individual websites with CC info) and lets you checkout quickly. It's also great if you get scammed out of your money somehow... Their chargeback system is stupidly easy and is infamous for always siding with the buyer.

It sucks when you're on the other side of the transaction, though. Used to run a Minecraft server as a teenager, and they gave me a huge amount of grief between indisputable chargebacks and locking my account once for KYC purposes.

I also had this issue. You can easily solve the problem by disabling the Windows update service in Services.msc.

What kind of new-fangled hack is that? Here in Switch-land we just use a bit of tinfoil for our piracy needs.

OmahaBoy69··on America’s bad bet on sports gambling
I've only witnessed it twice personally. One being a restaurant job I briefly worked and the other being a small shady interior design firm my buddy works for. I'm yet to hear of a larger corporation doing it though.
OmahaBoy69··on PiBox: a tiny personal server for self-hosting
Chiming in to say that if you're using this to buy a Pi from AdaFruit make sure to register an account with two-factor auth before you get the chance to buy. They require this to deter scalpers, and they'll run out of stock before you're able to finish the process if you haven't already done so.
OmahaBoy69··on 700M users and Premium
Outside of being great for cross-platform messaging, it's awesome for transferring files. Quick, no restrictions on file extensions, and I've yet to hit a size limit. Great for building an APK and shooting it off to my friends + other devices.

It's also great for piracy. There's a channel I'm in with links to updated Nintendo Switch modpacks as well as one for premium STL files.

Fire Red/Leaf Green using RetroArch + NetPlay?

Alternatively, check out PokeMMO. It's basically a multiplayer Pokemon game built on the roms of the original games (supports gen 1, and 3-5). There isn't a native Switch build though so you'd need to dualboot Android or Linux if you wanted to make that happen.

OmahaBoy69··on Flutter 3
I'd just like to chip in with my (opposite) experience:

I semi-recently developed an app using Flutter and used an iPhone 6, a 6s, and my old Redmi Note 5 as a baseline for performance testing. While I'll admit I wasn't doing anything particularly graphics heavy (at most: sliding modals and some animations), I wasn't able to get things to dip under 60fps on either platform.

As for the GPay app, the only performance issue I could notice from testing just now was a dropped frame while quickly scrolling through the "explore" page. Otherwise it works perfectly on my Z Flip 3.

On the other hand - have you considered upgrading devices? I always hate whipping out the iPhone 6s (same A9 CPU as your SE) because it runs like hot garbage in most cases... a recurring theme in the iOS space.

OmahaBoy69··on A 4-year-old can run errands alone and not just on reality TV
>In Chicago, it's pretty much illegal to be a kid without an adult present in most places

Funny story about this. In highschool I had a teacher who lived with her 12 year old daughter in Chicago, where the legal age for leaving your child home alone is 13. If she needed to run errands alone she'd just leave her daughter to do a loop on the L train (which doesn't have as tight age restrictions). Bizarre.

If it's just a matter of tuning the computer (most likely), all the owner needs to do before inspection is plug the tuner back into the ODB-II port and reset the computer to factory settings. Super easy.
OmahaBoy69··on U.S. eliminates human controls requirement for fully automated vehicles
Agreed on all but remote start. Maybe it's different on fancier vehicles (I have a '13 Mustang), but it's usually just a radio that starts the engine and nothing more. Hardly a security risk.
OmahaBoy69··on Apple Mac Studio
Using my two monitors. They support HDMI and VGA. Pretty standard stuff.
OmahaBoy69··on Ask HN: Why is there no small Android phone?
> I don't want a small screen, I want a small phone

It's definitely not what I'd call an "HN-friendly device", but check out the Galaxy Z Flip 3. I thought I'd hate it at first (no 3.5mm jack or IR blaster), but the whole system of having a tiny device that folds open into a giant screen is surprisingly awesome.

OmahaBoy69··on On iPhone sideloading: it’s ok, I’m changing my mind
Google must be pretty lax then. I bought a Google Play license in 2013, and proceeded to upload a handful of shitty apps that have all been auto-removed at this point. My dev account still works just fine, so ymmv.
OmahaBoy69··on Kinesis Advantage 360
I have the Ergodox EZ, so similar to the Moonlander. It took me about a full workweek to use it without looking at the keyboard, and another week to type at a competent speed. That said, after three years of ownership, I still can't type as fast as I can on my MacBook's keyboard (last I checked: 65wpm with the Ergodox, 109wpm with the MacBook).

Still totally worth it.

OmahaBoy69··on O&O ShutUp10++ – Free anti-spy tool for Windows 10, 11
I experienced this too. Thank god for having a noisy HDD or I never would have noticed.

I fixed it by replacing the software_reporter_tool.exe with a blank file named "software_reporter_tool.exe" and setting it to read-only.
