Oddskar··on It's hard to say who's winning the streaming wars, but customers are losing
If anything these media companies should all have learned the obvious lesson from the last 10 years. The lesson that Gabe Newell put so succinctly years and years ago:

"Piracy is not a pricing issue, it's a service problem."

And yet they keep making this mistake over and over again. They have to make it convenient. Because what they're really competing against is a ~3 USD/month VPN subscription that lets me watch anything I want in HD quality.

Oddskar··on Tasking developers with creating detailed estimates is a waste of time (2020)
She was right about “macho engineers” in my opinion. They can be extremely disruptive for both a team and an org.
Oddskar··on Tasking developers with creating detailed estimates is a waste of time (2020)
I know that this is a commonly held belief, but: why does it need to be broken down? Can a 13 not just be a 13?
Oddskar··on Show HN: My proposal for a new keyboard layout
Looks interesting. Definitely a step up from AZERTY which when I've looked at it seems to have been put together by someone who insists on holding French programmers back.

This still puts a lot of emphasis on right-most part, which makes this quite unbalanced for programmers I think.

Personally I would never go back to any layout that doesn't have a numpad and all special chars a programmer needs without moving the fingers 1 row up or down.

Once one gets used to this everything else seems archaic.

Plenty of comments in that post that don't agree.
Oddskar··on Sweden no longer stands out in pandemic, says architect of ‘no lockdown’ policy
The graph is unusable considering the context of the different countries. You simply can not compare the two considering how little attention Sweden actually pays to Covid in general and how little testing facilities there actually are in comparison to Germany.

That's not something unique to the US, I saw the exact same thing across the pond.
Oddskar··on Sweden no longer stands out in pandemic, says architect of ‘no lockdown’ policy
I wish there would be more talk about the other side of Covid: the people suffering of various long term post-covid problems.

I think this will be the high price that Sweden really will have to pay in the long run.

Oddskar··on How I Use Notion
Or it's due to the fact that people are like me. I never liked Evernote nor Onenote because they always felt clunky and got in my way.

When I found an alternative that I liked (Notion) I switched to it. Simple as that really.

Oddskar··on Hoax email blast abused poor coding in FBI website
Aha, sure. My intention with "semi" was to indicate that it would still not be anywhere near FAANG-levels; but rather closer to a median "good" salary.

It's not free when you are the product being sold.

> Inevitably, this will attract an undesirable amount of people who want to coast, with no ability to get rid of them.

Yes, my point exactly. I think it's cheaper to pay people a reasonable salary and less job security. Otherwise it just ends up being a lot of dead weight throughout the organization. This dead weight leads to low productivity, which in turn e.g. leads the management to bring on expensive consultants to try and fix it.

I think this quite accurately explains it: https://xkcd.com/538/

Not saying the method is violence per se, but rather that there are a lot of alternatives to finding vulnerabilities and backdoors.

Until someone doesn't think twice and adds some column to the DB that contains PII.

Having worked in government (although not in US), top fixes for me would be:

* Make it easier to fire incompetent people. A job that's in the service of the people should not be a cozy "I'm now set for life" type of gig.

* Pay semi-market rates.

* Stop going for the lowest bidder for contractors.

Oddskar··on When is the revolution in architecture coming?
It's not a theory in EU at least. It's a fact.

You think it's some arcane knowledge to make buildings beautiful? It's not. They're still occasionally made this way like I said.

They just don't want to do it.

Oddskar··on When is the revolution in architecture coming?
Why would you need one? Do we need referendums in software for usability?

No, we do not. We test with users and accommodate their needs and wants. That architects have strayed away from this is crazy.

Oddskar··on When is the revolution in architecture coming?
People do occasionally order buildings to be done in an older style that most enjoy. You know what happens afterwards? The architect involved gets ostracised. It’s “grotesque” apparently.

The problem is absolutely the architects and their profession. They are no longer producing buildings that people enjoy but rather caters to their own perverted aesthetical sense of pride.

Oddskar··on Remote work will break the US monopoly on global talent
It has relative soft power. The reason you hear lots of Brazilian devs wanting to move is due to the tremendous problems Brazil is facing. Not all countries have problems to this extent.

From a EU-centric perspective the soft power the US have is not that strong.

Oddskar··on Remote work will break the US monopoly on global talent
> But if your entire lens of what is happening in the country is news channels and the Internet, you need a reality check.

Not sure what your point is. How do you think people shape their opinions and perceptions on things if not via media and the internet?

What would this “reality check” consist of? I would move to the US for a number of years just so I can determine whether I want to move there? Should I read the collected works of David Foster Wallace?

It’s perception we’re talking about here. It doesn’t have to be rational nor accurate.

Oddskar··on Remote work will break the US monopoly on global talent
> I know you are underestimating the rep of the USA outside of politics and the dysfunction

I don’t really understand. Why would I disregard “the dysfunction”? That’s very much at the core of what shapes the rest of the worlds perception of the US.

Agree on the second point though. It does (potentially) globalise the job market quite a bit.

Oddskar··on Remote work will break the US monopoly on global talent
I think you overestimate the reputation of the US and underestimate how much it has rapidly declined the last decades.

I also think you underestimate how much effort it takes to really start over and become properly integrated in a new country. It is a very enticing prospect for many to side-step this issue entirely and still get an almost unfathomable salary for some countries.

Oddskar··on Use forums rather than Slack/Discord to support developer community

Oddskar··on Use forums rather than Slack/Discord to support developer community

Oddskar··on POSSE: Publish on your own site, syndicate elsewhere
No you weren't wrong. It's still largely useless for conversation. It's great for bandwagoning, trolling, angry mobs etc.

We didn't make the message less noisy to fit into 140 chars, we just removed most of the substance to make it fit.

Oddskar··on Angular 13
So in other words you have TERRIBLE separation of concern.

This was my point exactly.

Oddskar··on Angular 13
You really think Ember has the worst router? I'm the exact opposite. But maybe we used different versions of it I suppose, since it was overhauled a couple of times I think.

Agreed about rxjs though. Very underutilized outside of Angular unfortunately.

Oddskar··on Angular 13
And how to do you structure the business logic that is connected via hooks?
Oddskar··on Angular 13
> Also, JSX reminds me of PHP code in the 90s. While you can separate your markup from your view logic and styles with discipline, most React devs don't. Most components I've seen are a large hodgepodge of markup, styles and logic.

This is no doubt the biggest problem of React that no one talks about; “where do I put my business logic?”

The most common solution to this is to sprinkle it all over some sort of pseudo-controller components. Even worse when it’s all hook-spaghetti.

At least Angular recognises that not everything is components.

Oddskar··on Angular 13
It takes quite a bit longer than 20 hours to really understand Zones, DI, rxjs, decorators, parenthesised routes etc.
