Octopuz··on Show HN: GoPeek – open links in live mini browser windows without new tabs
If it isn't available for Firefox it doesn't fit my workflow. Also a duplicate post from https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48145073
Octopuz··on Autodesk deletes old forum posts suddenly
We have both an AutoCAD subscription and a perpetual license for the 2010 version. We couldn't install the 2010 version anymore because they shut down their activation server.
Octopuz··on Show HN: I Made a Ultra-Low Latency IP Geolocation API in Go
I like the initiative, hopefully your data quality will improve:

Octopuz··on Launch HN: DryMerge (YC W24) – Automate Workflows with Plain English
Looks cool. Which 14 services does the free account support? In the video I see SMS, Slack, Notion, Gmail, Google Sheets/Meet/Docs/Calendar/Drive, Salesforce, Hubspot, GitHub. I think Salesforce and Hubspot are in the $25/month subscription?

I would appreciate 'whenever I post on X or Mastodon add this to a sheet and put text and URL in its own column'

Octopuz··on LubeLogger: Self-hosted, open-source vehicle service records and tracker
I actually did. The previous owner could not open it because the front panel got disconnected from the electronics at the inside and he didn't bother to look further.
Octopuz··on Why do railway tracks have crushed stones alongside them?
During a boy scouts summer camp, we were on a separated camping area near a railroad track. We created a fireplace and used some stones from the track to build the fire on.

A pretty big mistake as it turned out. Because the stones were in fact vulcanic, they exploded when heated - so we were bombarded with stone fragments.

Octopuz··on TaxyAI: Open-source browser automation with GPT-4
This makes me think of https://www.bardeen.ai/ but maybe more capable of finding out what to do by itself.
Octopuz··on IKEA launches VINDSTYRKA – a smart sensor to measure indoor air quality
If you look up a product in the AliExpress app and copy the link, this is what you get. It does not give you any commission unfortunately. So it's not an affiliate link.

It is said that the core services will stop working. Google Photos, YouTube and purchases/subscriptions are not considered as core services.
Octopuz··on Google requiring all ‘G Suite legacy free edition’ users to start paying
Either become a nonprofit or delete the account in G Suite and recreate it as a free regular Google account after the domain name has been removed from G Suite.

Octopuz··on Cloudflare DNS servers prevent users from downloading PuTTY
The author writes:

If you use some of Cloudflare's public DNS resolvers (1.1.1.2 or 1.1.1.3), you may find you can't download PuTTY at the moment. The server that hosts the release files, the.earth.li, has been blocked since at least 22 May. We don't know why; Cloudflare's own categorisation of the site does not currently include any "security threat" tags.

Octopuz··on Spamcop.net – This Domain Name Has Expired
According to Julian Haight, someone might have forgotten to renew the domain, and that has been fixed now. The website isn’t online yet but no doubt they are working on that.

Octopuz··on Retiring Tucows Downloads
I still have my ‘official mirror’ T-shirt from Tucows (1994?)
Octopuz··on LibrePhotos: A Self-Hosted Google Photos Alternative
You could still run docker on the x86 models and host one of the solutions mentioned here.
Octopuz··on LibrePhotos: A Self-Hosted Google Photos Alternative
btrfs works fine in Synology's implementation. Please keep in mind that RAID is not a backup. You can backup to a cloud service or to a friend's house with its own Synology.
Octopuz··on Google Photos will end its free unlimited storage in June 2021
Does PhotoSync keep the GPS/location data when downloading from Google Photos? Their website is not very specific and slightly outdated (Picasa login anyone?)
Octopuz··on Google Photos will end its free unlimited storage in June 2021
I would be happy to pay up if I could be sure that my account is safe at Google. I am mentioning this because of multiple reports of people who saw their account being closed because of an unnamed TOS violation, and no way to get it back.

The people working at Google might not be able/allowed to comment on this, although I would appreciate their view on this issue.

Octopuz··on Ask HN: What RSS Reader do you use?
It already has that feature.
Octopuz··on Lunar – macOS utility to set brightness and volume on external monitors
I tried to find a source for these concerns. Although I can find documentation on DDC (until 1998) and EDDC (since 1999), and indeed read that these often use EEPROM, I cannot find any reference of someone who broke his monitor by changing the brightness too often. This utility is very useful combined with the adaptive brightness of my iMac so I am tempted to use it. But I would appreciate any supporting evidence of this concern.
Octopuz··on Show HN: I'm 15 and made a bedtime calculator with React JavaScript
Nice idea. The clocks are one hour off here: the text says 00:55 but the clock shows 11:55 pm, and so on.
Octopuz··on NextDNS Is Out of Beta
You run it yourself on your own hardware - a PC, Raspberry Pi, Linux server, Docker container - you choose. It is open source; logging remains with yourself. It only works inside your own network unless you VPN into your home network when you are remote.

That's why I switched to Adguard Home: https://adguard.com/en/adguard-home/overview.html You can make custom configurations per device, OS or a different label you give them. So you can have your wife see their ads while still blocking your smart TV from calling home.
