Anyway, bed time is almost here.
Google claimed a lot of things but generally the theme was "We're nice, ethical...trust us with monopoly power, we'll be considerate...blah blah" and people believed it, helping them get even more market share. IMO they seriously abused that power especially in the past 2-3 years, only to fatten their wallet http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/google... at the expense of websites that provide the content for Google Search. It's not merely academic, well meaning small businesses lost everything they had, and then some.
If I /we were stupid to believe that, and if "Google doesn't owe you any traffic," fine but we sure have the right to voice out our opinions.
That's an opinion, but I no longer fall for Google's kool aid...and yes, there's some boomerang from having drunk it earlier on.
FYI: I don't work for Google. So its not just google employees that disagree with you.
The good thing is that I am not looking to get noticed, get funded or being hired here so I truly say what's in my mind. I am 100% sure that many [insert corp name here] employees disagree with me on virtually every topic.
Me too. Considering the flagging of bad-for-Google stories it makes sense.
That's what you meant for the "simple explanation" right?
How many "little bugs" has Google squished with their Search? Granted they didn't get sued by DOJ because they were smarter (Google's Lobbying Budget: $25 Million During FTC Probe - http://thenextweb.com/google/2013/01/04/google-spend-25-mill... ) than Microsoft but with a 70% online market share they can destroy virtually any business or niche they want to.
All the extra stuff you see on Google Search now was done by other companies and most were destroyed during Search updates for having "spammy and shallow content." If you ask Google why the clutter? The answer is something like "Because users love that content...blah blah" But users hated it when others did it and Google didn't make money on it. Of course.
I have also noticed that Googlers aren't fans of saying "Disclaimer: I work for Google" but go straight into praising Google's Product A and Feature B as if they had no bias.
"Google is good and Microsoft is evil" is getting a little tiring and IMO is no longer true. Google will do almost anything for a quick buck:

Just imagine what may hide in their black box algorithms as Google claims fairness an unbiased results.
People are in denial but some truth is coming out little by little.
IRS, FBI, your divorce lawyer, former business partner's lawyer and the local police department also work better...when they have everything you've done, where you've been (hello Android!)searched for and said all stored and cataloged. If it's stored they'll get it, otherwise there's nothing to get. If you have nothing to hide, you shouldn't be worried and all. /s
No doubt he'll open his wallet and for research that will help others that still haven't had the vocal cord issue.
It's not a risk, it's a business opportunity. At least it was for HSBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-18866018 . Joe Schmo from small Town, MN would have been a felon by now for doing the same with $10K. The fact that HSBC, other banks (NY Mellon Bank iirc too) and their execs got away with a "cost of doing business fine" shows what's wrong with the system
If phishing and malware was spread thanks to skype, what would people say?
Maybe an Apple engineer can chime in
Is the post-Mubarak Egypt any better for the average Egyptian? You can argue that US should mind it's business, but otherwise do not assume that the alternatives are perfect.
Using that logic we could reason that yes, Saddam was horrible, but Iraq without him could be much worst.
If a US cope beats you, you most likely hit the lottery, in other countries if they didn't beat you, you hit the lottery. The rest of your examples are oversimplifications. What if US didn't exist and tyrants didn't fear anyone? How many local if not world wars would we have?
As for oil, US lost trillions fighting Iraq and Afghan war, not sure what you mean. But yeah, generally speaking US wants countries to drill as much as possible to have cheaper and plentiful oil.
Brands escape major updates, something we saw especially after Panda. As soon as some major sites were hit, they changed the algorithm. Google does not algorithmically punish certain sites for link buying and other shenanigans. I suspect that after a site reaches a certain level of score (not calling it PR) it's golden. So buying 123456789 comment spam links for "Matt Cutts" on fiver will not do much, but 500 links to mymomscookies.tld will cause them to go to page 10, or dead in the water.
Google doesn't seem to care because small sites don't give them pr problems (Audi and Macys would) and small sites will be forced to advertise, if they want any traffic. Notice the perverse inventive? Cut the free traffic and increase adwords' business.
Until recently Google was winning the propaganda war, now not so sure. On web forums people are openly talking about search manipulation to increase advertising via Adwords and ad clicks. http://searchengineland.com/google-matt-cutts-penguin-update...
Yeah, lots of things. Things I mentioned in the comment.
You're on hn every time there's a Google story talking about how they're killing smaller sites, acting monopolistic, violating anti-trust regulations or whatever, what is your motivation?
T-R-U-T-H is a great motivator.
Almost certain that there is. After a certain internal Google score (?) it appears like no update will penalize you with things like 70% traffic drop out of the blue. Big brands are largely not effected by Google's many updates and even when they buy links etc they are forgiven very fast. Regular sites on the other hand are told generic nonsense as they lose visitors update after update.
>>If your worried about this update then you haven't been doing seo right
I love this statement, heard it right after Panda when the "good SEOs" were bashing the panda hit sites...and then their own sites were destroyed too. As horrible as it may sound, I actually felt good.
Eventually. Doesn't mean that Google isn't doing it believing they're controlling the negative effects or doing it "just a bit" this time and a bit more that quarter.
Diversity on Google is largely gone on transactional search, big brands rule both the ads and organic search. This is responsible, IMO, for Google at almost $900/share but will eventually ruin Google. They got too greedy and people will eventually bypass them and go directly to the brands Google promoted for short term cash.
