NullHypothesist··on Christopher Walken Has Never Owned a Cellphone
What a dude. Truly a unique personality (not just because of lack of cellphone, but in general). Mad respect.
NullHypothesist··on 2024 general essay questions for Oxford 'All Souls' scholarship [pdf]
Some great conversation-starters here! Saving this for a future dinner party...
NullHypothesist··on What Should Tesla's Stock Be Worth?
Notably less than it is now

So much focus on "self-driving" which is not proven (at least by Tesla's approach) to scale, and fundamentally it's a car manufacturer, not a tech company

NullHypothesist··on Waymo robotaxis are coming to Tokyo in 2025
Cool to see them headed to a city that drives on the left hand side of the road, and glad to see them beginning to grow internationally
NullHypothesist··on Exotic new superconductors delight and confound
Better scientific understanding of the underlying process (as highlighted by this article), better pattern detection (AI), and better simulation capabilities (quantum computing) all point to accelerating progress on this front.

What makes me particularly optimistic is the wide range of scenarios in which superconductivity is observed (also highlighted in the article); different mechanisms leading to a similar result suggests much better opportunity for the existence of a room-temp SC than if it were a highly similar pattern.

Certainly such a discovery has some serendipity and luck baked in, but given these advances across the board, 5-10 years seems like a reasonable bet (then another decade or two to widespread adoption). Let's hope we don't blow everything up before then.

Does it work for o1 or just 4o?
NullHypothesist··on Chaplin's Speech in the Great Dictator
This, and Lincoln's 2nd Inaugural Address, are the two bits of prose that I find most moving and hold most dear.
NullHypothesist··on Waymo and Hyundai enter multi-year, strategic partnership
Doesn't seem like getting rid so much as optionality... Makes a lot of sense for Waymo to partner multiple OEMs. I'd imagine, barring an outright ban, some Zeekrs will likely find their way to US streets. I'm curious if this will accelerate Waymo's expansion into international markets, as they've doubtlessly agreed to purchasing some minimum number of Zeekr vehicles. Maybe they launch in Japan, Australia, Singapore, or UAE in the next year or two to put that supply to use?? Shot in the dark, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a "Waymo Launching in Singapore" headline on here sometime before next April.
NullHypothesist··on Ask HN: What happened to Larry Page?
He's had issues with his vocal chords, so this is a potential reason why he hasn't given many (any?) public appearances as of late. Curious to follow, as I've wondered the same thing...

NullHypothesist··on Alphabet Second Quarter 2024 Results
That's cause so many of them live in NYC and are oblivious to things that don't exist there
NullHypothesist··on Waymo Is Suing People Who Allegedly Smashed and Slashed Its Robotaxis
I mean... what's the alternative? They just let people smash their vehicles without repercussion? I would certainly pursue legal action if someone slashed my tires while I was driving. Why would this be any different?
NullHypothesist··on What would it take to recreate Bell Labs?
Waymo's got an open-to-public service in SF & Phoenix. Testing in LA & Austin now. It works really well, and has been expanding quickly (relatively speaking). https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/22/travel/self-driving-cars-...
NullHypothesist··on Silicon Valley's best kept secret: Founder liquidity
Having only worked for larger companies (RSU stage), I'm curious what the typical breakdown of founder to early employee to investor to later employee equity looks like. I'm sure it differs pretty wildly, but I'd love to know what a 'typical' case for mid-to-late-stage start up looks like.
NullHypothesist··on How Waymo outlasted the competition and made robo-taxis a real business
No need to wait... https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/11/24069251/waymo-driverless...
NullHypothesist··on Scientists may have discovered a flaw in their understanding of dark energy
This will be potentially comforting news to a young Alvey in Brooklyn. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5U1-OmAICpU
NullHypothesist··on Autonomous trucking is harder than autonomous rideshare
They don't operate in snow now, but everybody was like "This is great, but it doesn't work in the rain!" this time last year. I've now taken many flawless rides in outright downpours in SF. It might take a year or two, but I have no doubt snow will be something that is a non-issue in the near future.
NullHypothesist··on Doritos Silent
Watch out Nvidia! This is clearly cutting-edge chip technology if I've ever seen it.
NullHypothesist··on Google's Gemini model is delayed
I do think the one area that Alphabet is still genuinely innovating is Waymo. With Cruise sidelined, if they can manage to turn it into something that makes money (have ridden in SF, and the tech seems to work great), it could be up there with Youtube & Android, maybe even bigger.
NullHypothesist··on Tao Te Ching – Gia-Fu Feng, Jane English Translation (1989)
Read this translation back in 8th grade (~2005?) and it blew my teenage mind. Have read a few more - perhaps it's sentimental, but none quite seem to do it for me like this version.
NullHypothesist··on The Beatles
Thanks for sharing! I had this weird obsession with what I thought was an obscure skiffle group from Liverpool called the Quarymen. Never knew what happened to them and figured they'd petered out. Glad to see they seem to have had a decent second act!
NullHypothesist··on Driverless Cruise car collides with SF fire truck, injuring passenger
Why is it always Cruise in these incidents? From afar, it seems that Waymo is generally safer & more methodical in their rollout while Cruise keeps announcing new cities before they've quite solved things. I get that they need to be bold if they're going to try to compete, but is it worth injuring people and creating negative press for the industry? ...Ultimately I'd love to see multiple players in this market, but I feel like Cruise has jumped the gun a bit here, and I am afraid there will be wider backlash.
