Nogwater··on Fireworks filmed with a drone
There were four quadcopters at the show in Westlake Village, CA last night (well, 4 at one point, I only saw 2 return). I'm pretty sure they were all DJI Phantoms based on the LED placement. They were not invisible. I wouldn't say they were a nuisance, but that's probably just because I was more curious about them than annoyed. Maybe in a few years when the novelty has warn off they will be more annoying. I don't know if they were flown by locals, by the host, or by the fireworks company. I was a bit concerned that the operators flew right over the crowd at the end which seemed unsafe and unnecessary.
Nogwater··on Homebrew Oculus Rift Eye Tracker
The patent landscape around eye/gaze tracking must be a minefield.
Nogwater··on Selection bias and bombers (2008)
This work by Wald is mentioned in this genetics lecture: http://youtu.be/BJm5jHhJNBI

I recommend it if you're interested.

Nogwater··on The day I left my son in the car
Apparently it's hard to tell the difference if you're untrained. Seems like calling for help if you are concerned about the safety of a dog or kid is reasonable, even if it means you could be wrong.
Nogwater··on How I'm using Twitter to acquire 100 uniques a day for my startup
If there isn't that much traffic between 3am and 9am, then why is it worth it to spam during those hours?
Nogwater··on How I'm using Twitter to acquire 100 uniques a day for my startup
I agree with the sentiment that this is borderline unethical, but I think that it's probably okay as long as there's a human in the loop presumably spending as much time/effort verifying the usefulness of the tweet before sending it as it costs the end user to read the tweet and decide if it's worthwhile.
Nogwater··on Unofficial Atom Builds for Windows
Yeah, are these errors normal?

Nogwater··on Driver caught using cell phone jamming device
Since hands-free phone usage is just as distracting[1], it would be very challenging for a police offer know if someone is using a cell phone while driving. Probably we just need a cultural shift to make people reluctant to use a phone (or even talk to their passenger) while driving. My guess is that we'll get self-driving cars first.

Edit: https://www.aaafoundation.org/sites/default/files/MeasuringC... Don't talk to passengers folks! (like that's going to happen)

Nogwater··on 100 Supercharger Stations
There's a nice interactive map here: http://www.teslamotors.com/supercharger

It looks like you can do cross country road trips if you take a specific route through the middle of the country. By the end of this year, it looks much better.

Nogwater··on Google is hiding I/O tickets in developer documentation images
I'm in the US and tried at least 10, all with failure.
Nogwater··on China's Search Vessel Picks up Pulse Signal in South Indian Ocean
Maybe it's an accelerating frequency, like a chirp? :)
Nogwater··on Complaints as Amazon Raises Cost of Prime
Isn't it the difference between 2-day shipping (and sometimes faster) vs. slow shipping (typically 3-5 days for me)?
Nogwater··on Ask HN: Why isn't Erlang more popular?
Not knowing enough about Erlang/OTP or Go: Would it be possible for more of OTP to be replicated in a Go 2.0? What's missing? What would it take? What can never be replicated?
Nogwater··on Project Tango
Could this do real-time position, rotation, and gesture tracking if it was embedded in a VR head-mounted display?

Nogwater··on Important Kickstarter Security Notice
That makes sense. Wikipedia says "The primary function of salts is to defend against dictionary attacks and pre-computed rainbow table attacks." So, I guess I was thinking that if salts were stored separately, then that would help on the dictionary angle.
Nogwater··on Important Kickstarter Security Notice
Was the salt stored in the same database and also accessed?
Nogwater··on Male, female or custom? Facebook adds options for users to self-identify
It's even more complicated than that because sex really isn't binary either. Here's a good explanation in video form: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXAoG8vAyzI
Nogwater··on Indian School Girl Creates Washing Machine That Runs Without Electricity
When camping, we used to use a 5 gal. plastic bucket with a hole cut in the lid and a plunger. It actually worked really well if you have 20 minutes to sit around manually washing clothes.

A bunch of water also goes back to the environment, but I don't think we want to take that.

Nogwater··on Text normalization in Go
I wasn't thinking that I'd really want to pluralize text like this, but maybe you'd want to turn people's names into links in HTML source or something. If someone's name ends with an accent, and if the unicode isn't normalized, strange things are bound to happen. The blog post is great at pointing this out, and it sounds like people are working on a go.text/search package to help, so that's good. I'm not saying Go is broken, just that this kind of stuff can be really surprising.
Nogwater··on Text normalization in Go
Yeah, I get that. It's just that you might assume that the strings functions would operate on character boundaries (as defined in the blog post) and not based on runes (code points). Leaky abstractions and all that...
Nogwater··on Text normalization in Go
That "café" -> "cafeś" replacement is pretty scary. It looks like the built in strings.Replace function makes the same mistake:

  fmt.Println(strings.Replace("multiple cafe\u0301", "cafe", "cafes", 1)) // multiple cafeś
Nogwater··on Severing Ties with the NSA
I guess it depends on what you mean by "moderately informed." I've been on HN for a while now. The HN community obviously cares about the NSA's activities, but how many posts were there on HN about the NSA collecting all of this information before Snowden? Or are you just talking about people in the academic crypto community?
Nogwater··on Show HN: Bit of News
I like the simplicity, but how can it deliver it every morning without asking for your time zone? The confirmation says it'll deliver at 9am. UTC?
