NoMAD76··on Dear startups: I hate subscription services (2021)
Security vulnerabilities should be fixed by patches/security fixes w/o forcing users to go up the ladder to "za niu anz shaini version" + "our new and enhanced x$/mo"
NoMAD76··on US Economy Dips into a Recession: GDP falls at an annual rate of 0.9% in Q2
A sign you (we) are getting older, I found myself often saying "..back in my days.."
NoMAD76··on Florida man breaks into Space Force base to warn of alien-dragon space war
After a very "ugly working day" on my end, this story managed to make me ROTFLOL and enjoy living on Planet Earth :)
NoMAD76··on Ask HN: What non-English news, blogs, discussion groups, communities you follow?

NoMAD76··on Reality doesn’t exist until you measure it, quantum parlor trick confirms
More like "Cogito, ergo sum" (I think, therefore I am). And it does makes sense but it's quantum so..
NoMAD76··on Tell HN: I’m a wannabe developer, who works as a construction worker
You should always came upfront and tell them that you have an issue with oral communication. I'm 46 and all my life I struggled because whenever things got oral I have a rush of adrenaline that renders me almost powerless. It helped a lot if I tell them 1st about my issue, they will adapt/understood your issues.
NoMAD76··on Why do so many web news articles not have a date in title?
Just another SEO magic trick, not knowing article date increase chances that someone will click -> impressions -> advertisers are happy -> publishers gets paid -> end user doesn't matter for getting old and most of the time outdated info
NoMAD76··on SSD will fail at 40k power-on hours (2021)

NoMAD76··on Meta is inviting researchers to pick apart the flaws in its version of GPT-3
Our grand-grand-granfathers generation believed in most of the things because, you know "I heard it in the church". Our grand-grandfathers generation believed in most of the things because, you know "I read it on the newspaper". Our grandfathers generation believed in most of the things because, you know "I've heard it on the radio". Our parents generation believed in most of the things because, you know "I've seen it on TV". Our generation believed in most of the things because, you know "I've read/seen/watch it on social media".

I don't know about the next generations(s), the only thing in common for the above mentions was that they were made by a real-human.

NoMAD76··on Meta is inviting researchers to pick apart the flaws in its version of GPT-3
You have a solid point, but I wasn't talking abut summarizing or excerpt from a press release (those are anyway handed as press-kits before with all NDA agreements and so on).

Real human journalists have a delay of about 1m before making a short tweet. Funny (or not), something similar was in the "live update" article page in less than 10s. Including photo(s). I was on quite a lot of tech-conferences/live events and earned a decent living then as an independent tech journalist (but then I got bored and really it was a 1-man-show).

Another personal observation (from field), that was not happening prior to 2010-2012, the years we all got Siri, Cortana..

You can make the dots and dashes.

It's all about having the right tools, but I wonder how long can we "beat the machine" :)
NoMAD76··on Meta is inviting researchers to pick apart the flaws in its version of GPT-3
It's about being 1st to publish it. It is mainly use during live press conferences. No human can snap a photo (at least), write a short update in a dedicated article, and so on... all in 1s.

Been there (as an independent press member years ago), simply you cannot beat that.

NoMAD76··on Meta is inviting researchers to pick apart the flaws in its version of GPT-3
Fake news and AI generated news are kinda all over the place for a good amount of time. It's faster and cheaper to have AI write news from a press release.

My prediction is that in the next 10y we will really struggle to determine between fake-people and real-human. There will be an explosion of fake-identities posting more and more human-like.

But I'm not Nostradamus so I could be very very off here.

NoMAD76··on Ask HN: What do you use for journaling
I'm using Notepad, simple pure .txt where I easily drop random notes. I have a single .txt file on my desktop to keep all things and that gets updated almost daily. I'm not archiving "done" things, I just erase them and that's it.
NoMAD76··on Ask HN: Europe to East Coast, does it make sense to move at 50?
Note: sorry, my english is not my native language

My only advice(s) as someone in mid '40s are: 1. Don't jump to such a sudden and radical change, many-many things in US are vastly different that what are you accustom (strong point since you're from Germany) 2. Give it a try since you're mostly working as freelancer, spend 1-2mo (tourist visa) so you will not break up from your wife 3. See how's living there, if you can accommodate 4. Let us know (start ablog) :)

NoMAD76··on What’s up with Austin?

NoMAD76··on Tag Heuer watches to display NFTs: The ultimate status symbol?
Funny way to cash-in from all this NFTs non-sense hype, kudos to Tag Heuer for milking the opportunity
NoMAD76··on OpenBB wants to be an open source challenger to Bloomberg Terminal
They've lost me at "building a slick 21st century UI"
NoMAD76··on Show HN: Search Engine for Blogs
I will advice against any automation for the foreseen future of your project. Having a few guys (volunteers) helping with manual review shouldn't be so hard to find.
NoMAD76··on The Universe Is Expanding Faster Than It Should Be
I'm not thinking of other dimensions, a multiverse could be something like our body with millions and millions of cells that are interacting. Somehow I just cannot stand with this "universe is infinite" when for sure it has a border but we will never be able to go past that border to know what's beyond.
NoMAD76··on The Universe Is Expanding Faster Than It Should Be
There are things (trivial or not) that we can't know or explain with our limited knowledge. But reality is always beyond our wildest dreams.
NoMAD76··on The Universe Is Expanding Faster Than It Should Be
I have a tiny theory but since I'm not anywhere near this domain it could just look dumb. It implies the existence of a multiverse system, billions of universes like ours, like soap bubbles, all floating around each other. Well, if the gravity (and other forces, matter, energy, etc) works as intended then "objects/forces" closer to the universe edge gets pulled away by "objects/forces" from the other universe.
NoMAD76··on ASCII Video Player
I would love to have it as a browser extension for various personal reasons but sometimes I do fancy the good old arcane time Something like this --> https://andrei.codes/ascii-camera/
NoMAD76··on Hetzner Cloud Goes US (Ashburn/VA)
For my purposes 250mbs is more than enough as it's just a testing )no prod) VPS
NoMAD76··on Hetzner Cloud Goes US (Ashburn/VA)
Great deal, I use OVH Starter VPS that is a fraction cheaper at $3.50 (same config) For testing and personal use I found both offers to be top-notches and only DC location could be a decision factor here
NoMAD76··on I've built HackerHouse to work and live wherever you are. Would love feedback
Seems pretty good, but let's think if you're an introvert or you wish to stay/work as a couple... What options can/do we have other than co-living/co-workspaces? Would love to see some diversity of options.
