Nightshaxx··on So you think you know C? (2016)
Minor point, but isn't Android moving to Kotlin? I don't think they see Java being a sustainable choice for the long term.
Nightshaxx··on Spotify shuts down direct music uploading for independent artists
The way they impliment it is pretty bad. Basically you have to add a local music folder on your PC, then you have to use the search tool to find it (on PC) and add it to a playlist. Then you have to go onto your mobile while on the same network as the PC, and download the playlist.

Spotify doesn't store your song at all on their servers (unlike google) and if you want to re-download the files on a new device, the original pc that had it has to still be there or else you have to redo the whole thing.

Nightshaxx··on The Google Cemetery – A list of dead Google products and why they died
I love how many products got shutdown and moved into Google+, then google+ got shut down....
Nightshaxx··on Ask HN: What methods and tools can I use to decrease my app churn?
If I had to guess, he might be gating the app with a login. Yes some people might be willing to sign up for a new service, but for me if the app doesn't allow me to check it out before signing up, I almost always uninstall
Nightshaxx··on Ask HN: What methods and tools can I use to decrease my app churn?
Agreed. If a minority of people like the app and you want to appeal to the majority, don't ask the minority what they want because those might be reasons the majority don't care about/dislike.
Nightshaxx··on Public by Default: Venmo Stories of 2017
To be honest I had no idea they even made transactions public and I'm definitely more proactive about turning on privacy settings than the average consumer. I thought it was just a friends thing......I didn't know it was everyone in the world....
Nightshaxx··on Yahoo, Bucking Industry, Scans Emails for Data to Sell Advertisers
Hmm that's pretty interesting. Makes sense that they are trying to get in on the ad game, but I would expect them to rebrand to get the revenue on the search/mail ads and such since Yahoo has the infrastructure already for it.

I assume that if Verizon is being hands off Yahoo must be doing decently well. Otherwise I'd imagine they would be trying to move it in a new direction.

Nightshaxx··on Medical researcher discovers integration, gets 75 citations (2007)
> Sorry, I'm not very smart or something, I don't get why it's hilarious, can you explain?

You learn this theory (you find the area under a curve by adding up the boxes under a a curve) in your first semmester of calculus and is the basis for the integration which is a huge focus for the next two symmesters of calculus. (And that's only what I have taken.)

The trapizoidal rule that she "comes up with" (something you learn in Calculus 2) is acctually not even the most accurate way to estimate the area under a curve. Simpsons rule is more accurate.

It's hilarious because any engineer would instantly know to use these rules since you learn them freshman year of undergrad. This medical student redefined very commonly know theroms around those who use calculus more.

DISCLAIMER: I am only a Junior CS student who did well in Calculus. Anyone more experienced, please feel free to correct me.

Nightshaxx··on Yahoo, Bucking Industry, Scans Emails for Data to Sell Advertisers
What exactly is Verizon's plan with your company if I may ask? Are they just looking to make money off of existing customers and the few good products they have, or are they going to try and make a move to become a serious silicon valley competitor?
Nightshaxx··on Intel Publishes Microcode Patches, No Benchmarking or Comparison Allowed
I think it's referring to laptops. That said I had the ASUS Zenfone 2 and the performance seemed alright, but certain apps didn't work because of the architecture difference, most notably Pokemon Go for the whole time it was popular (although it's probably for the better that I missed that whole craze).
Nightshaxx··on Napoleon Was the Best General Ever
Idk, I think it is a pretty interesting thought experiment. Sure it's not focusing on overall tatics or deeper reasoning, but you can't really measure that with data.

The author is just looking at purely combat performance as some sort of way to rank them. Anything deeper wouldn't really work from a data perspective because we really don't have the best records from back then.

Nightshaxx··on Ask HN: What is your favorite gym motivation video?
A classic...
Nightshaxx··on Snap’s Drop in Active Users Could Signal a Social Media Peak
I think Web 3.0 is going to be more focused on small communities and niche-focused platforms. Look at how many people shove money to twitch streamers and YouTube personalities that have minimal operating costs but extremely strong communities.

The whole reason companies like the web is because it provides high profit margins since compared to physical things, the web is incredibly cheap. Communites allow companies to make money off of feelings and comradre that their users build for them. Twitter doesn't have sense of community so people are quick to leave, but even if pewdiepie left YouTube, the platform would be fine because it has so many other niches that people would stay for.

Nightshaxx··on South Korean cam-hunter squads conduct electronic sweeps of public spaces
I think they should definitely make it a much more serious crime with harsher penalities. It's too hard to catch everyone with a camera, but if you catch a few people and give extremely heavy fines and jail time, you will discourage others.
Nightshaxx··on South Korean cam-hunter squads conduct electronic sweeps of public spaces
This is a pretty big privacy invasion and privacy is something very valuable to people. Our browsing activity doesn't seem like a big deal, but when companies are taking away our privacy and using it to create ads, a lot of people care! The big problem is that people have their privacy and personal space bubble, and if you reach into it they will be very angry.
Nightshaxx··on Lubuntu is taking a new direction
I feel like what they are describing is what xubuntu already is....still I'd love to see some more power give to the DE
Nightshaxx··on The Twilio API for WhatsApp
Damn that's actually pretty interesting.
Nightshaxx··on Asus replaced the touchpad on its new ZenBook Pro with a 5.5-inch touchscreen
Lenovo already did it I'm pretty sure.
Nightshaxx··on Asus replaced the touchpad on its new ZenBook Pro with a 5.5-inch touchscreen
They had a prototype of one where the Razer phone acctually got put in the laptop and was used as a touch pad.

Also I think there was a gaming computer with a screen for a numpad.

Nightshaxx··on Google’s Airpods competitor do real-time language translation
Agreed. It would make sense to have an offline mode.
Nightshaxx··on Google Pixelbook – A High Performance Chromebook
It's pretty great (I don't have one, but I have heard universal positivity for it) That said, you loose a lot of the security features that come with a Chromebook when you enable Dev mode.
Nightshaxx··on Giving you more characters
"Your platform has been co-opted and manipulated, turned into a megaphone for hate and propaganda."

Yet here you are using it.....

Why do people really think that x or y company is to blame for minority opinions getting so much traction on the internet. The very definition of public speaking/communication is that it gives small individuals big voices, no matter how big or small of a following they have. They cannot be stopped from expressing their opinions unless a. The platform they use is tyrannical (picks and chooses the ideas it likes or doesn't like) or b. Is actively committing a crime ( excessive cyber harassment and doxing).

If Twitter wanted to actually fight "hate and propeganda" you would grow to hate the platform! How long untill your ideas are silenced?? I get that the Nazi and white supremacist propaganda is right at the line, but make no mistake, untill they commit acts of violence ( which of course, they have. These instances should be punished) _it is merely an opinion and does no more damage than your opinion._ If you wine about how they shouldn't have a voice, you are wasting your breath (although you have the right to do so). With the internet there are so many ways to propagate information that the Nazis and white supremacists will find a way to get their message out. Fight ideas with ideas, not censorship.

Nightshaxx··on If SoundCloud Disappears, What Happens to Its Music Culture?
Yea, I would love that script. Online services I've used to download my likes kinda suck.
Nightshaxx··on App sizes are out of control
I believe it does have a text to speech engine......the Android app has one.
Nightshaxx··on Scientists Edge Closer To Lab Test For Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
As someone who has suffered from CFS I am so happy to see it becoming more recognized and understood. You see, the frustrating part of having an illness like this is it is not well known enough for people to really understand it, but it has major impacts on your life. I can't tell you how utterly angring it is to be sitting in front of my computer and I know that if I just finish this school paper that isn't anything that hard, I can go to that social event, but I just am so tired I can't do it.
Nightshaxx··on Social Media Is the New Smoking
I think that the basic idea of the article is frighteningly true; social media is becoming that thing I use when I feel sick, bored, or just want to escape reality.

The problem is smoking feels the same wiether 1 person is doing it or 1 million people do it; social media only really works when everyone you know does it. This makes it even scarier when you realize this will make it exponentially harder for we as a society to make a decent dent in social media: if your high depends on others, you might pressure others into sustaining your high.

Nightshaxx··on Ebay will match Amazon’s, Walmart’s and others’ prices on over 50K items
Because not only can advertise your price matching feature and get more customers, but you charge your normal prices to the 90% of people who don't bother to price match.

Basically you can have your cake and eat it too. (To some extent)

Nightshaxx··on Ask HN: People who completed a bootcamp 3+ years ago: what are you doing now?
As always, relevant xkcd: https://xkcd.com/1827/
Nightshaxx··on Smartphones can be fooled by fake, digitally composed fingerprints
> The researchers did not test their approach with real phones, and other security experts said the match rate would be significantly lower in real-life.

You are indeed correct. I wish someone would do a full test on how secure the readers are.
