NiekvdMaas··on Another 1.3M Americans File for Unemployment
Meanwhile the S&P 500 is 5% away from an ATH record. Unemployed people = gambling with stocks + FOMO?
NiekvdMaas··on New Compute Engine A2 VMs–First Nvidia Ampere A100 GPUs in the Cloud
In case you're wondering about pricing: the V100 costs $1260/GPU/month and this A100 will have about 2.5x its performance [1]. A n2d-highmem-96 instance is $4377 per month. So for the maxed out a2-megagpu-16g I would expect around $54k per month before usage discounts etc.

NiekvdMaas··on Turn on MFA Before Crooks Do It for You
If your old phone is rooted:

adb root && adb pull /data/data/com.google.android.apps.authenticator2/databases/databases
NiekvdMaas··on Show HN: OBS-web – Control OBS from the browser
YT and FB allow live streaming your webcam from the browser, and there are some other options like restream Live Studio that offer simple features such as overlays/backgrounds. A full OBS-like web based studio does not exist (yet), as far as I'm aware.
NiekvdMaas··on Show HN: OBS-web – Control OBS from the browser
That's great! Let me know if it works well for you and/or if you have any suggestions (I'm Dutch myself).
NiekvdMaas··on Show HN: OBS-web – Control OBS from the browser
You need to install the obs-websocket plugin first. You can set up a password there, and to expose the instance remotely you need a tunnel service like ngrok or pagekite.
NiekvdMaas··on Model S Long Range Plus: Building the First 400-Mile Electric Vehicle
If you charge overnight on your garage, you never need to visit a supercharger unless you take road trips. Last time I visited a supercharger was 4 months ago.
NiekvdMaas··on Hey: A wildly opinionated new email service from BaseCamp
But Hey, you'll get less email!
NiekvdMaas··on Google Chromium, sans integration with Google
You can disable most of the telemetry with command line switches like --disable-background-networking and --disable-sync, but some things like field trials and doubleclick fingerprinting cannot be excluded in regular Chrome/Chromium AFAIK.
NiekvdMaas··on OpenSSL 3.0
What does the license change mean for LibreSSL (OpenSSL fork) and GnuTLS which have "a better license" as their main selling point?
NiekvdMaas··on New.css – A classless CSS framework to write modern websites using only HTML
Milligram is not class-less, it's more like a light Bootstrap.
NiekvdMaas··on Love Bug worm's creator tracked down to repair shop in Manila
Here is the source code: http://www.cexx.org/loveletter.htm

I love that the guy put in his email and physical location.

NiekvdMaas··on Using a self-rewriting README powered by GitHub Actions to track TILs

NiekvdMaas··on United States has more total Covid-19 cases than China
This is extremely worrying. No other country has seen such a sharp increase in COVID-19 infections like the USA. On top of that, the death rate is also very high. And this is just getting started...
NiekvdMaas··on Netlify raises $53M Series C as microservices approach to web development grows
I'm talking about regular network egress. CDN egress is cheaper, but still $13k+ and more depending on destination/cache hit rate/etc.
NiekvdMaas··on Netlify raises $53M Series C as microservices approach to web development grows
FYI: 300 TB egress at standard GCP pricing is already more than $17k.
NiekvdMaas··on The vast but little-known fund of the Mormon Church
According to the article around 50 billion USD, so half the size.

NiekvdMaas··on Tesla autopilot clips wing mirror of parked car
My experience with Tesla AP: it's great for highways, but definitely breaks down on B-roads like this. I doubt Tesla will cover this, since AP comes with a million warnings to not rely on it in such situations.
NiekvdMaas··on AirPods Pro owners complain of worse noise cancellation after firmware updates
According to the ratings tests, the QC35 has much better NC with -25dB compared to -21dB for the Airpods Pro. The Bose 700 reached an even better -28dB.
NiekvdMaas··on I spent way too much effort to win a game show on Dutch national TV
I saw Andries a couple of weeks ago at a comedy night in Utrecht. His demonstration of memorization of "best" words was impressive!
NiekvdMaas··on Sulfur Lamp
Plus a slightly longer lifetime (60k hours vs 50k for LED)
NiekvdMaas··on Creating an open-source solution to the headaches of headless browsers
Still impressive for a 1-man show who says he spends just 1% if him time on it.
NiekvdMaas··on Show HN: A small bootstrapped independent VPN company in the Netherlands
Why focus on Apple devices only? It seems like a strange business decision to limit a general service to a minority of the market only.
NiekvdMaas··on Possible hijacking of dutch airplane in Amsterdam
Latest report is that the pilot accidentally hit the wrong button. That's gonna be an expensive mistake.
NiekvdMaas··on Encrypted web traffic now exceeds 90%
Telegram does have some unique privacy-related features though that other platforms don't support. Examples are: ability to register without a mobile phone/app, open source library (tdlib), ability to edit messages, ability to delete messages for both sides (including images that are cached on the receiver's side), ability to clear chats for both parties, auto deleting messages.
NiekvdMaas··on Alphabet Announces Third Quarter 2019 Results
Something else that's interesting is the doubling of the effective tax rate from 9% to 18% yoy. Is there any explanation for that?
NiekvdMaas··on The V language now compiles itself in 0.09 seconds
V is a pretty interesting language. I've been playing with it for the last few months, it takes a lot of the good stuff from Go with saner syntax and defaults. And compilation speed is amazing.

The big missing item so far is GC (memory management is manual). Another thing is that the language evolves constantly, so you keep having to change your own code every week or so to stay valid.

NiekvdMaas··on Visual Studio Code – September 2019 (version 1.39) update
Microsoft is putting an enormous amount of work in the development of VS Code. More than 70k closed issues and almost 6000 PRs is massive. Good to see it getting better and better without slowing down or getting bloated (so far). My favorite recent addition is the official Remote extension.
