NewEntryHN··on Google to reduce workforce by 12k
It's not a charity you know. If they fire those many people, it's because they're confident they can go on without them. There are countries in which the law is more protective of employees, and you can't fire them unless you have serious economic reasons, which is a good thing. But in a country like the US where this isn't the case, I wouldn't shift the moral responsibility to the company itself. Its goal is to make money.
NewEntryHN··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
> cheaper for Elon to have paid to build an entirely new Twitter

That's cute.

NewEntryHN··on Ask HN: Is there a list of richest based on liquid assets not stock wealth?
Doesn't Warren Buffett have like $60 billions in cash?
NewEntryHN··on Google has most of my email because it has all of yours (2014)
Most of my emails are from services, not people, so I guess Mandrill (and the likes) has most of my emails.
NewEntryHN··on “Quantum-Safe” Crypto Hacked by 10-Year-Old PC
> Remember, this is a demolition derby. The goal is to surface these cryptanalytic results before standardization, which is exactly what happened

NewEntryHN··on France risks winter blackouts as nuclear-power generation stalls
So that instead of having blackouts when Russia invades Ukraine, we can have blackouts when there is no wind.
NewEntryHN··on Oncall Compensation for Software Engineers
> the expectation that most of the time nothing will go wrong

Useless expectation as it still steals your freedom.

NewEntryHN··on Body integrity identity disorder patient satisfaction after surgery (2014) [pdf]
OP doesn't question the issue nor the necessity to fix it. He questions the solution.
NewEntryHN··on More invested in nuclear fusion in last 12 months than past decade
> other than in the form or solar power

and wind and hydro

NewEntryHN··on The End of CI
Fundamentally, you can't trust what worked on a developer's machine and you need a centralized system (the CI) to validate your build. So if the author is right, this will likely comes with the development taking place closer to the CI than the CI taking place closer to the development.
NewEntryHN··on The End of CI
That's ridiculous, committing to the same branch doesn't scale beyond 1 dev.

Trunk-based means merge requests get merged into master instead of feature branches.

NewEntryHN··on No-one knows what they are doing
The author is not talking about the same standard. "Knowing what you're doing" means that you're familiar with a situation and you know exactly the correct course of action. This is not the case for most things in adult life (especially politics), in which every problem is a new problem, for which you use heuristics to converge to a solution, that isn't perfect, but at least tries something out.
NewEntryHN··on Street View turns 15
Great projects that work come from tinkering, not strategic or business analysis. With business analysis you get stuff like Meta.
NewEntryHN··on Ask HN: How can I stop my inbox/wishlist/bookmarks/tabs/todos from growing?
Reduce your spending, to near zero, and switch to almost always just-in-time.

In my experience, todos and bookmarks grow because I assume that my future me will be more interested than my present me about some thing, and so I send it to him. The truth is that anything I don't have an actual drive in reading or doing _right now_, I won't have an actual drive either in the future.

If you don't need to fight the irrepressible urge to read or do something, let it go. Otherwise, read it or do it right now. Todos are there in the case you don't have the time right now.

NewEntryHN··on The balance has shifted away from SPAs
It's called "applications" because it's not "sites". Slack, Gmail, etc.
NewEntryHN··on Correct Backups Require Filesystem Snapshots
Nobody cares about correct backups. Backup your pictures and payslips and whatever paper you're working on.
NewEntryHN··on Python’s “type hints” are a bit of a disappointment to me
TL;DR: type hints are a disappointment to me because they're only hints.
NewEntryHN··on It's not your fault
The way to attribute accountability is protocols. Create and maintain protocols that are known ways to do something safely. If you broke something by disregarding the protocol, then you've fucked up. If you broke something by complying with the protocol, then you discovered the protocol needs to be updated.
NewEntryHN··on It's not your fault
> he repeatedly

Surely the first occurrence led to a post-mortem which documented and forbed the practices that became known to be dangerous for production.

NewEntryHN··on Choose your status game wisely
He played the science game and was so good at he obtained a Nobel Prize.
NewEntryHN··on Developers spend most of their time figuring the system out
It's developers who don't want pair programming, because they're introverted and don't like it.
NewEntryHN··on Hyper-realistic digital humans in Unity
Photography replaced painting. I don't know about boring, but reality wins.
NewEntryHN··on Deepfakes, can you spot them?
The best deepfake I've seen is the Tom Cruise one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyiOVUbsPcM
NewEntryHN··on Effective teams don’t keep secrets
The only effective method to stop secrecy is vulgarization and evangelization, otherwise nobody's gonna trust that what you do or how you work is the proper way.
NewEntryHN··on Heuristics that almost always work
I think it's what he calls "fat tails" : events happening at low frequency at the tail of the probability distribution, but which have a significant impact.
NewEntryHN··on Ask HN: What is your system for backing up family photos and video?
That's a lame backup frequency though. One year of data is significant loss.
NewEntryHN··on Embrace slow productivity
> Several bosses have explicitly told me they intentionally set an unrealistically aggressive delivery date because of the phenomenon of people taking as much as time as they're given.

That's because even the "non-aggressive, realistic delivery dates" are actually an under-estimation of the amount of work. Practically all deadlines are too soon, and how much you allow to stress out employees parametrizes how much too soon.

NewEntryHN··on Video of Tesla on Autopilot Crashing into Stopped Truck at 75mph
Comparison with human ability aside, this would most definitely not have happened with Lidar. Musk's argument has always been that you don't need Lidar because humans don't need Lidar, but since the goal is to do better than humans this might not really work out in the end.
NewEntryHN··on Chrome users beware: Manifest v3 is deceitful and threatening
Firefox has already been forked multiple times because of decisions from Mozilla, see [Pale Moon](https://www.palemoon.org/) or [Waterfox](https://www.waterfox.net/). Few people use those forks, for the simple reason that what has been removed from Firefox is not game-changing enough to mandate an exodus. However I agree that removing support for uBlock Origin will surely be another story.
NewEntryHN··on Chrome users beware: Manifest v3 is deceitful and threatening
There is surely a bias between users of extensions of uBlock Origin and users of Firefox. The userbase is still smaller, but maybe not enough to completely throw away development.
