Nekhrimah··on A near-disaster at a nuclear weapons lab takes toll on America’s arsenal (2017)
> Euthanasia for someone exposed to lethal radiation should be the recommended treatment.

That was my thinking too. The poster child for humane avoidance of suffering.

Nekhrimah··on YouTube’s ‘dislike’ barely works according to new study on recommendations
Overwatch's current avoid player system has a limit of 3 players, and only for 7 days per player - and no way to extend unless you run into that player again. Also, it's only avoid as teammate (which was alluded to in the top sniper story, but not specifically stated).
Nekhrimah··on Apple’s iPhone 14 Redesign for Repair
Vans may be slightly harder to hide than phone repair equipment.
Nekhrimah··on Killing invasive species is now a competitive sport
This happened in New Zealand with possums. Originally intentionally introduced to begin a fur trade industry in the 1800s [0], by the 1960s the Government was undertaking eradication efforts. One of these was a bounty, which resulted in possums being intentionally introduced into Northland so that the bounty could be collected there as well. [1] Northland is "cut off" from the rest of the non-urban area of New Zealand by Auckland, being an urban area from coast to coast. Possums had previously not spread through the city to Northland. The bounty took care of that.

Nekhrimah··on Blocking Kiwifarms
I've only recently learned of this site, and being a NZer, with the name Kiwi in the title I assumed some sort of connection to NZ.

But it looks like there isn't? It's American based, and when the NZ govt made a request related to the Christchurch mosque massacre, the admin told them to pound sand.

So, why is it called Kiwifarms?

Nekhrimah··on New Zealand's plan to prepare for inevitable climate change impacts
Likely the Inflation Reduction Act.
Nekhrimah··on Ask HN: What are some of your favorite YouTube channels?
Watched a few, not really my style. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Nekhrimah··on Ask HN: What are some of your favorite YouTube channels?
Scott Manley. Started with Kerbal Space Program videos, now one of the leading freelance Space YouTube channels: https://www.youtube.com/c/szyzyg

Tim Dodd, the Everyday Astronaut. Bought a Russian space suit, started wearing it and making videos. Has leveled up to interviewing Elon Musk, and other notable Space related people such as the former NASA administrator: https://www.youtube.com/c/EverydayAstronaut

Lindsay Ellis. Got her start in an ensemble channel, in the last few years has produced long form video essays mainly about film. Nothing in recent months sadly: https://www.youtube.com/c/LindsayEllisVids

Nekhrimah··on Google’s video chat merger begins: Now there are two “Google Meet” apps
>Google+ died because it was forced on everyone that had a Google and a Youtube account

Today I have two Youtube accounts despite every effort to not end up with a real name G+ account. And while all of my main activity is on my non-real name account - i.e. the one I actually want, I'm forced to use the other to connect to rewards (Overwatch League tokens to my Battle.net account for watching Overwatch League), because I'm not allowed to do that on my "branded" account. An account I never wanted to exist.

Nekhrimah··on It’s time to leave the leap second in the past
There is a provision for negative leap seconds. In practice, this has never happened.
Nekhrimah··on Why America can’t build quickly anymore
> The best info we have is that it was a bio lab release

Did you perchance mean wasn't a bio lab release?

Nekhrimah··on Spotify was down
Ok thanks.
Nekhrimah··on Spotify was down
The desktop app is indeed horrible. To start with, a substantial part of the right hand screen real estate is permanently to your social media presence. Don't want to connect anything? Still can't dismiss this entire waste of space.

On iOS it's fairly simply to remove songs from the active queue. God help you on desktop. No consistency in design.

Please pay more UI/UX staff, and less Rogan.

Nekhrimah··on Samsung Screwed Up Encryption on 100M Phones
Is there an actual list of affected devices anywhere? Or, because this is software, is it effectively every Samsung Galaxy phone within a date range?
Nekhrimah··on That wild Ask a Manager story
Half way through your first example I was thinking it sounded a lot like New Zealand. And then, it was! In that case, it's also affected by (from numerous anecdotes on twitter et al) that a lot of case managers either don't bother, or aren't empowered to work the system for their clients.
Nekhrimah··on Elon Musk Gives Starship Update Presentation
Not really anything new for those that have been following this closely. Reasonable roundup for those that only check in occasionally. And a very impressive backdrop.
Nekhrimah··on How big was the Tonga eruption?
> the bay area

It's always interesting that anyone who lives in a "Bay", refers to their local as THE Bay. For this phenomenon, which is documented as circling the globe, who knows where this could be!

Nekhrimah··on Google Antitrust
This post details intentional abuse of Chrome's dominant browser position to push the AMP technology onto the web.

> Google throttles the load time of non-AMP ads by giving them artificial one-second delays in order to give Google AMP a “nice comparative boost.” Throttling non-AMP ads slows down header bidding, which Google then uses to denigrate header bidding for being too slow.

Antitrust behaviour indeed.

Nekhrimah··on Ephemeralization
> You can get to net zero carbon emission by shifting it to someone else or dumping it somewhere it isn't measured or is a temporary sink that will eventually re-release.

Often referred to as tragedy of the commons.

Nekhrimah··on Roku tells customers it is unable to strike a deal with YouTube
> Video intro, promo for about 60 seconds, then main video start.

Even better are ad sections that are coloured differently to that of the main video. A good example here is Chain Bear [0]. Chain Bear's colour style is based around yellow, and here the sponsored section is NordVPN, with a blue colour scheme. Very easy to skip exactly to where the content starts.

Nekhrimah··on Roku tells customers it is unable to strike a deal with YouTube
>>"Is it worth paying for YouTube?"

>I think that largely depends on your personal ratio of income vs perceived value of time vs annoyance by ads.

What boggles my mind, is the number of YouTube channels that have jumped on the reaction video genre, and amass thousands upon thousands of views, and occasionally have the video they are reacting to interrupted by ads?! And consequently, all of their viewers now have the same interruption! I generally give up on channels that can't do the minimum effort towards their production.

Nekhrimah··on Inspiration4 Launch Livestream [video]
This is an amazing mission, and I'm really looking forward to following their progress.

I am disappointed however, at casual factual errors being stated by the presenters. They produced a graphic showing that this mission will be targeting an orbit higher than the Hubble. This is correct, for Hubble's current altitude. However, the accompanying commentary then stated Inspiration4 will fly higher than any mission since Apollo. This is not correct. STS-103 [0] a servicing mission by Discovery to the Hubble in 1999, had an apogee of 609km - higher than the planned orbit for this mission.

The same casual error / re-definition of an already accepted term applies to the "all-civilian crew" line. The Ars Technica article [1] covers this point well; plenty of all non-military space flights have occurred.

Nekhrimah··on NASA's James Webb Space Telescope Launch Delayed to December
At the time the design was locked in, there was nothing even planned that would be capable of supporting a crewed servicing mission. They have however included a grapple bar so that there is something to connect to should there be something in the future. SpaceX's Starship is the most likely vehicle at this stage, but that is still substantial development away from being capable of a James Webb servicing mission.
Nekhrimah··on YouTube suspends Rand Paul for seven days
> complete eradication of COVID which by all expert account is impossible.

Several countries succeeded in elimination of community transmission, some more than once. Sadly, global coordination is just never going to allow for that at scale.

Nekhrimah··on Restaurant workers quit at record rate
> this fiasco

Your comment is informative, but, come on. This "fiasco" is supply in demand in action. When it (occasionally) favours the workers, it doesn't deserve to be described so negatively.

Nekhrimah··on Replit used legal threats to kill my open-source project
My understanding based on the blog post was that it was cautionary due to the threat of legal action. It seems clear that there isn't any doubt - it's caution due to the stakes.

Nekhrimah··on SpaceX Starship SN15 flight test live stream [video]
Pity about the live video streaming problems, but looks to be a fantastic outcome.

Looks like they may have lost a few of the lower windward tiles there.

Nekhrimah··on SpaceX Starship SN15 flight test live stream [video]
Nasa Spaceflight's stream https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPNvB5ComFw are also really good at explaining, answering viewer questions, and tracking the progress of the countdown.
Nekhrimah··on 18yr old professional bowler converts 7-10 split on TV in first time in 30 years
If we're sharing crazy rare stuff from other sports I present from international cricket: A bowler achieving a hatrick (3 dismissals in consecutive deliveries - very rare) and also getting hit for 6 Sixes in an over later in the same game. [0] 6 Sixes in an over has only been done 3 times in international cricket. It represents the maximum return for a batter from an over (without no-balls or wides).
