Nathanael_M··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2024)
I had no idea the same people behind Wordpress were behind WooCommerce and Jetpack AND Tumblr. What a wild amount of productivity in one place! Keep up the excellent work.
Nathanael_M··on A feature-rich front-end drag-and-drop component library
Really wonderful. I’m working on a ~relatively~ large web app and I just wrote drag and drop off as an option for form construction and report building, but this may put it back on the table. Thanks a lot!

I did notice some pretty intense issues using the examples on mobile. Is that just an issue with the examples, or is it something more foundational?

Nathanael_M··on A feature-rich front-end drag-and-drop component library
Yeah, this is very confusing to me. The examples barely function on an iPhone. Is it just this specific implementation or is it a foundational issue with the library?
Nathanael_M··on The man who killed Google Search?
Peter Attia's book on longevity is really wonderful, as is his public discourse and research.
Nathanael_M··on Humane AI – Pico Laser Projection – AI Twist on an Old Scam (2023)
Not your imagination, haha! Very thoughtful of you :)
Nathanael_M··on Humane AI – Pico Laser Projection – AI Twist on an Old Scam (2023)
Woah, I never thought about the brand. Can I just buy these things? Will eating them on the ground ruin the magic?
Nathanael_M··on Humane AI – Pico Laser Projection – AI Twist on an Old Scam (2023)
He seems like a guy super invested in changing our trajectory from techno-dystopia to techno-utopia. I really respect that shining optimism, but it may have gotten in his eyes a bit with Humane.

I sat behind a department head of theirs on a plane once. He was ranting to the flight attendant about how inefficient their baggage storage solution was because of how he had to check his carry-on. The flight attendant very calmly said "That's an interesting idea, sir." as he was mid diatribe about the lack of integrated sensor technology in overhead bins. He ended with a "I'm going to Tweet about this, this is totally ----ing unacceptable." A few minutes later he stood up to take pictures of the overhead bins and the flight attendant made sure he had a good clear view. "Let me help you, gotta get a good pic for the gram". Mr. Humane, with all the indignant condescension he could muster, said "Uh, it's for Twitter, not Instagram." Flight attendant responded "Ooh, Twitter, my apologies." I found the tweet while waiting for take off. I wonder if he ever got around to disrupting the space.

This is what I get for connecting in San Francisco. The flight attendant did give me a dozen packs of those little ginger-snap cookies, though, so I may be biased.

Nathanael_M··on Andrew Huberman's Mechanisms of Control
The stunning "gotcha" of this witch hunt (undoubtedly brought on by his proximity to individuals that the author doesn't like) is that Andrew Huberman was a bad boyfriend, weirdly flaky in his social life, and not an expert in all of the 100s of topics he discusses on his podcast (usually discussed with actual experts in the topics).

Okay...

Listen, if we stopped deriving information, education, or entertainment from people who have weird personal flaws, we would not read books, go to school, listen to music, or watch movies. Or have friends. What a silly article.

Nathanael_M··on Mistakes in the Design of CSS (2013)
z-index causes me physical pain. z-index puts stress on my marriage. My children will experience generational trauma through z-index.

But I can get that functionality very easily with an owl selector, whereas opinionated default functionality means there are cases where I have to actively fight the system.
Nathanael_M··on Why do recipe writers lie about how long it takes to caramelize onions? (2012)
There actually is a way to get deeply caramelized onions quickly. Ripping hot pan, start with a bit of water. Then it's just a pattern of sear, deglaze with water, sear, deglaze with water. Repeat until level of caramelization required is achieved. You won't get it in 10 minutes, but it's VASTLY quicker.
Nathanael_M··on The core problem with hamburger menus
There are scads of articles like this, either from the accessibility > all or the page size > all tribes, that obnoxiously "solve" problems by sticking their fingers in their ears and ignoring all objections. Throw in a snarky tone and sanctimonious justifications and bam: you got a black text white background web dev blog.

Sorry, but for 99% of websites, businesses, and individual browsers, the harm of moving all your navigation a flat hierarchy in your footer VASTLY outweighs the harm of a hamburger menu.

Nathanael_M··on It’s not aliens. It’ll probably never be aliens. So stop. Please just stop
Isn't the whole "existence of aliens" question functionally religious? If you believe in God as an origin of life, we are the only intelligent life in the universe. If you believe in abiogenesis, we aren't. Obviously that's a big generalization and there's lots of room for fun sci-fi speculation, but that's kind of the big turning point, no?

As for explaining UFO's/UAP's as aliens, that seems to be the least likely explanation, but shutting down all talk of UFO's/UAP's because of the association of the terms with aliens/"I want to believe" people is silly. There's plenty of room for conversation both valuable (what terrestrial technology and motives could be behind these?) and just fun and enjoyable (wild speculation about technology and motives).

I love scifi, this strikes me as a community filled with people who love scifi, I am excited about secrets and technology and a future filled with continued technological advancement. I'll never stop enjoying this type of speculation.

Nathanael_M··on Military unable to determine how the objects were kept aloft
They're probably just balloons. However, this is someone directly saying that they aren't sure they're just balloons. They're obviously very different from the first balloon.

Things can exist in the technologically fascinating middle ground between completely boring and aluminum foil hat alien invasion. If governments are investing into developing stealth balloons then I guarantee there is fascinating technology that we don't know about that I am excited to know more about. This is an ideal place to discuss it.

Nathanael_M··on Acting out dreams predicts Parkinson’s and other brain diseases
Aren't these separate things? They seem to be referencing a distinct acting out of specific motions in dreams. Something separate from an unstructured reaction to stress/terror etc.
Nathanael_M··on Stripe is about to refund €147k worth of payments to my all of my customers
Every time someone posts one of these that seems to be the case. "Patrick Collison personally slapped me in the face and keyed my BMW for NO reason!" See comments where it turns out they're selling anthrax to baking blogs branded as instant yeast.
Nathanael_M··on Genders.wtf
Male/Female/Undisclosed/Textbox perhaps?
Nathanael_M··on Stripe is about to refund €147k worth of payments to my all of my customers
Out of curiosity, can you be more specific about what you sell? Consumer electronics like vapes or consumer electronics like Alibaba hoverboards or consumer electronics like a quality, entry level set of computer speakers? Stripe seems to be pretty sensitive towards certain industries and I'd like to see if this holds true here.
Nathanael_M··on Small Teams
I really appreciate this comment. You've very clearly presented a problem that I hadn't considered and now that you've presented it, I can immediately see it in my work life. The business I'm with is suffering from "service" creep. "We can and will do anything." It's really damaging the quality of our services and putting a lot of pressure on us to expand in a direction that's not our biggest area of opportunity. You've given my something to think about.
Nathanael_M··on Solar panels reduced my electric bill in 2022
Thanks!
Nathanael_M··on Solar panels reduced my electric bill in 2022
This is very exciting. Does this mean the biggest continuing expense would be batteries if you wanted to self-sustain with solar?
Nathanael_M··on Solar panels reduced my electric bill in 2022
Sorry, life after 25 years? That's WAY higher than I thought. That's incredible.
Nathanael_M··on Solar panels reduced my electric bill in 2022
Does anyone have any detailed, up-to-date resources for personal solar use? I'd love to learn more, in particular the cost/output/lifespan progress by time. Last time I checked in my area it seemed that you didn't quite break even, but that was a while ago and my understanding was/is very limited.
Nathanael_M··on Ask HN: What was the best software that you used during 2022?
Unrelated to the software, you should reduce the line height of the headers on your website and slightly increase the line height of the body!
Nathanael_M··on Ask HN: What is the best thing you read in 2022?
The Bible (NASB95)

Hahaha, this is a great story! Goes to show how pungent that stink is.
Nathanael_M··on The truffle industry is a scam
I learned that like 15 minutes too late during the Googling process of “Why do I smell so very bad after cutting open a propane tank with an angle grinder”.
